Because of course, it was the original actors that totally boned the terrific script.

that's just how we ride.

Doctor Who?

Hopefully this will be more of a straight adaption of one of the books.

I think it could be interesting and fun if they go that route.

problem is, they want him to use the original script from the first film

The silent? Seems like it'd provide a lot of leeway. ;)

yeah wasn't that thing only like 12 minutes long?  Gives them a lot to work with.

In what way is that a problem?

Because really, what's the point?  Why make the same movie?  If he was making a remake with a new script at least that'd be worth checking out, but why go to see the same Wizard of Oz but with CGI and probably cartoony 3D?

So, they're just trying to rush this out to beat the Disney/Raimi/Downey Oz flick, right?

I don't want to dismiss it out of hand, but I kind of agree with RoninFox.  I'd really like to know why they want to do this, because it's not like the original is an obscure, hard to find movie.

Great thinking!  Worked so well for that Psycho remake....   ::)

So, I have to ask.  Would the people reacting negatively to this be happier or angrier if it was a new script?

I'd be happier.  If I watch a remake I want it to have something creative to add.  The more I hear the more I want to see the Raimi Oz movie, because it sounds like an interesting take. A remake with a used script just make me think "I'll watch the old one"

Fair enough, I think you're unusually reasonable as far as someone being against a remake/modern adaption/etc though.

Images of a dead-eyed CGI Scarecrow eerily mapped to look almost-but-not-quite like Tom Hanks danced in my head.

Then I saw this at the end of the article.

QuoteUpdate: Well, everybody can calm down now. PopWatch spoke to a source at Warner Bros. who said that while the studio did indeed have a meeting with Robert Zemeckis about potentially remaking The Wizard of Oz, Zemeckis wanted nothing to do with the project. (Score one for Zemeckis.) The source was quoted as saying, "The reports that Robert Zemeckis is doing The Wizard of Oz are absolutely false." Well, to be fair, the reports merely stated that Warner Bros. wanted Robert Zemeckis to direct the remake, which seems to actually be confirmed via this report. Additionally, PopWatch seems to think that, because Zemeckis was the studio's first choice for director, the project will either be moved to the back burner or abandoned altogether. Obviously, I'm pulling for the latter, but I'd feel a lot better if the source had said 'nobody' is doing The Wizard of Oz remake.

Ah, well. Now they can tap who they really wanted - Ratner.
