I know a few of you enjoyed Zombie-Thon last year, so i thought i would give everyone here at Rifftrax a heads-up... i've moved Zombie-Thon to it's own blog! I'm still getting used to the blogging software and format, so things aren't quite "ready for primte-time" yet. But if you'd like to take an early look at the site, just drop by sometime and leave us a comment: www.zombiethon.wordpress.com

See you in October.

Zombie-Thon: October 2010

I'm excited to get going!  I've been collecting zombie movies for a month already, and now there's just over a week left. I'll be coming right out of the gate with a lot of remakes and sequels this year. And, of course, it all ends with the premier of The Walking Dead on AMC. It's gonna' be a great month!

Scott- It's probably easiest to quote a post that contains a YouTube video, and then tweak the code a bit.

As i mentioned, i plan on focusing most of my attention on my new Zombie-Thon blog. Unfortunately that sort of limits participation to the comments section, so i'll also coss-post most of my movie reviews here. But if any of you have a WordPress account and want to become a regular contributor, just let me know. I could also repost anyone's reviews from this forum on the Zombie-Thon blog during the marathon if they'd like.

Plastic Self-Cleaning Duck

Ugh....you just reminded me that I have to miss the "Zombie Crawl and Pig Roast" that the costume/magic store down the street is having Saturday.

Have to work.

Sorry about that! Zombie-crawls are fun... don't know about the pig roast, though. But there's a lot of zombie stuff going on this month: Atlanta's got The Atlanta Zombie Apocalypse, Chicago has Musical Of The Living Dead, California has Knott's Scary Farm, Pennsylvania's got Monroeville Mall and Zom-B-Rama, and GWAR are looking for zombies near Richmond, VA to be in their next music video!

There's lots of zombie-centric events going on all over the country this month! And if you can't go to any of 'em, at least swing by my blog and take part in Zombie-Thon: October 2010!

You're a credit to the horror world, Rude. I'll be following this blog with great interest, and may even get off my lazy butt and type something (well, I'll type it sitting down, but still...).

Are we gonna post Zombie movie reviews in here? 'cause I've got a few I can contribute in the next few weeks.

Then again, maybe it's not this Saturday.....the sign outside the place says the 2nd but a couple of the sponsor websites say the 9th...

QuoteThe 2nd Annual Scared.com Zombie Crawl will be held on Saturday, October 9 at 1:00pm in Littleton.  Zombies will meet at the Dance Studio in the Woodlawn Shopping Center where the Undead will have a chance to learn the dance from "THRILLER". They will then be lead by a New Orleans Funeral Band down Main Street in Downtown Littleton where they can mix and mingle with the live residents there. The Crawl will end up at the Reinke Brothers Haunted Mansion  where the Zombies that survived it with most of their body parts still intact will be treated to lunch.  Prizes will also be given out to the most deserving Zombies who participated.

Meanwhile, I did watch Shock Waves again....Peter Cushing, John Carradine, Brooke Adams, Luke Halpin from "Flipper", Buck Henry and John C. Reilly look-a-likes and a bunch of peroxide blond Nazi SS zombies lying in tide pools....plus music that could double as tinnitus.

I've posted some Warnings And Whatnot on the Zombie-Thon blog. It's basically just a FAQ for n00bs, but it's there if you need it. One thing i'd like to reiterate here though, is that almost all of my reviews continue beyond what you see here... including the infamous Best Scene, Worst Scene, Whatever Scene from last year's marathon. Simply click on the words "Continue Reading" to see the entire review! It's basically a cheap trick to get you to visit my blog, but no one's twisting your arm... and i'd appreciate it.

Now on with Zombie-Thon: October 2010!

Night Of The Living Dead (1990)

Back in the late 80s George Romero began work on a remake of his classic zombie masterpiece Night Of The Living Dead. The idea was partly due to the original film's botched copyright status.

See, when Night Of The Living Dead mistakenly entered the public domain nearly everyone involved in the production lost their rights to the film and the financial opportunities that it's cult status offered.

So around 1990 Romero rounded up a number of the original crew, and recruited special effects wizard Tom Savini to direct. The result is a completely average film. Continue Reading...

Zombi 3

Alright, here's the screwy genealogy of Zombi 3; it is the sequel to Zombie... which is known as Zombi 2 overseas, which was an unofficial sequel to Dawn Of The Dead, which is known as Zombi in Italy. So technically, in some totally bizarre way, this horrible little film can actually be traced all the way back to Romero's original Night Of The Living Dead!

But that's as far as the similarities go, because this film is kind of a mess. Apparently Lucio Fulci abandoned the project, leaving Bruno Mattei to finish the film... and the resulting patchwork was released in 1988 as Zombi 3.

The plot revolves around a biological weapon that can bring the dead back to life. A failed heist results in the spread of this chemical, and eventually it leads to yet another zombie apocalypse... on some tropical island in the Philippines, i think. Like most things in this film, the location is never entirely clear. Continue Reading...

Dawn Of The Dead (2004)

Ready for a little zombie movie blasphemy? Well, here it goes... I actually enjoy Zack Snyder's Dawn Of The Dead nearly as much as the original. And in some respects, even more so!

It's weird for me to say that, because i remember being completely underwhelmed during it's theatrical release back in 2004. Obviously the movie itself hasn't changed, so it must be my appreciation for it that has... "evolved" maybe?

I do know that i'm no longer in film school, and i've seen enough low-budget, z-grade crap since then to more fully appreciate a competently produced zombie movie. But really Dawn Of The Dead manages to steer so far away from the original script, that it simply becomes it's own film. And it's a great film to boot! Continue Reading...
