Lest Talk About HDTV's

You have the same problem I have for a large HDTV to set on a smaller size stand.. I bought a 2 x 8 12 foot board yesterday at Lowes and had them cut it in half for 2 6 foot long boards that I plan on staining and attaching them side by side on top of the existing shelf to support the longer/wider base feet of this new HDTV. It's a crude but a simple solution for my setup..
My front window has been blocked by my TVs for years.. First the 46 inch projection RCA TVs and then my 55 inch Vizio and now it will be completely blocked by this 75 inch HDTV.

I also have cast iron radiators in various places, that limits things even more, there's one behind the TV in the picture I posted.  It's almost as if they weren't thinking about TVs when building the house in 1940.  ;D

ihavemyreasons

I don't think they even make plasma TVs anymore, but when I got ours (10 years ago now) viewing angles on HD LED TVs sucked. (Early plasmas had a problem with burn in, but that had been fixed by the time we got ours). I'd love a bigger 4K TV, but the other thing with plasmas is that they have a lifespan about as long as the tube TVs they replaced, so I have a tough time justifying replacing a perfectly OK 52" just to get 4K plus then needing new peripherals in order to be able to watch anything in 4K. Also don't think my internet service has the bandwidth to stream in 4K and thanks to their monopoly here it'll be years and years before they upgrade to that point if they ever do in my lifeftime.

I don't think anyone has made a plasma TV since around 2015.

Black Friday deals have started at Best Buy, the Samsung 55" QLED TV I was looking at has dropped to $1000.  That's less than the 46" I got 10 years ago, so now down to $400 more than the 58" regular LED.  My reason for upgrading is better resolution, color, and contrast, so I guess I'm leaning towards the QLED.

ihavemyreasons

Was in Wal Mart today...wasn't looking at TVs but they had a stack of 65" LED TVs with some brand I've never heard of (TLC) for $398.
Probably a POS, but the price was tempting.

I still can't decide between OLED and QLED, or just going with regular LED...

But I did just order replacements for my blu-ray player and receiver.   I had always bought Sony receivers in the past but was seeing too many bad reviews, went with an Onkyo 7.2 surround unit with 6 HDMI 2.2 inputs.  So once it's all set up I'll be ready to watch 4K content as soon as I make a decision on what TV to get.

I'm probably getting too worried about OLED burn in, it's probably less of an issue than the possible wearing out of the quantum dots.  This TV will have to last me a good 10+ years, so I don't want to start noticing issues in that time.

I thought I read that some work is being done on a combination QOLED system, but I could be wrong.

That would be the best of both technologies, the blue pixels in an OLED display have the least amount of burn in, so if you built the panel with all blue pixels and then put quantum dots in front of them to get the colors, it should increase brightness and solve the burn in problem.

You hit the nail on the head. That is what Samsung is developing.

Well I finally made a decision.  The decision on size was made for me, the landing of the stairway going to my 2nd floor is too small to get the box for a 65 inch TV up there, so I had to go with 55.

Decided to ignore the threat of burn in and went with OLED, the LG C8 series with the a9 processor.  Bought it from Amazon, should be here Friday.  Was going to get it from Best Buy since the page for the item said it would be here Friday, but when I put it in the cart it said Monday, since I can take Friday off to wait for it and not Monday, Amazon it was.

I was encouraged by some of the latest burn in tests done, I don't watch any of the content that has shown bad burn in (CNN), but I do watch a lot of letter-boxed stuff and there have been a few groups that have tested that and showed no lowering of the brightness in the center of the screen, and the pure color images don't show any signs of a dim box forming in the middle.

Should have pulled the trigger a month ago, prices were a bit lower in February.  It's only money, now that I won't be spending $250 a month on a horse I can afford it.

Glad I remembered the size limitation for my stairs, the box for the 55" OLED TV just made it up to my media room.

Wow!  The image on this thing is unbelievable, it's so weird not seeing the back light bleed through the corners during dark scenes, and the colors are fantastic, watching some stuff with HDR and that is even more amazing.

While this TV was probably the best I've seen using default settings, still needed to tweak just about all of them to make stuff look like you see in the theater.

Can't wait to watch the restored 4K version of 2001, that should be something.

Might not do that tonight, I think I picked up a bug Wednesday, yesterday my throat was a little scratchy and today it's burning and my nose is starting to run...

Amazon had a sale on 4K discs last week, select 3 from a list for $39, I got Apollo 13, The Martian, and Serenity, along with 2001 that wasn't on the sale list.

Guess I'm not going to watch Phillies games on this thing, Comcast puts a very bright red static logo on the screen, about as bad as the CNN logo I've seen cause problems with burn in.

Guess I should look into a 4K Blu-Ray player for my 75" Vizio..
What would be a good brand to buy? I'm not a fan of Sony so a good brand besides Sony I would be interested in.

The prices are all over the place for HD Blu-Ray players, I went with a mid range one from Samsung:

It loads discs super fast, T2 would take minutes to load on my old player, about 15 seconds on this one, most discs load instantly.

It was brand roulette for this upgrade: I replaced my Sony receiver with an Onkyo, replaced the Panasonic Blu-ray with a Samsung, and replaced the Samsung TV with an LG...

I just upgraded my Netflix to include 4K for an extra $4 a month, watched some of Lost in Space that was shot in 4K HDR and it's like you are looking through a window onto live action.  I was not expecting to be blown away by the increase in detail, it's not as big a leap from SD to 1080p or DVD to Blu-Ray, but it has been very noticeable.

I saw that one but wound up going with this LG based on the reviews for just under $130:

Was looking at 4K of ID4, T2, Die Hard, Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind, & 5th Element but shipping on Used-Like New condition halted that purchase :-[
