So I was looking wistfully at AFI's top 100 movies list today, as I do occasionally....and I think I'm going to recommit to watching them all.  There are a shameful number of these that I have not seen, and I want to correct that.

I'm embarrassed.....but here goes.....I've never seen these movies:
7.    The Graduate    1967
8.    On the Waterfront    1954
9.    Schindler's List    1993
13.    The Bridge on the River Kwai    1957
16.    All About Eve    1950
17.    The African Queen    1951
19.    Chinatown    1974
21.    The Grapes of Wrath    1940
23.    The Maltese Falcon    1941
24.    Raging Bull    1980
27.    Bonnie and Clyde    1967
28.    Apocalypse Now    1979
29.    Mr. Smith Goes to Washington    1939
30.    The Treasure of the Sierra Madre    1948
31.    Annie Hall    1977
33.    High Noon    1952
36.    Midnight Cowboy    1969
37.    The Best Years of Our Lives    1946
39.    Doctor Zhivago    1965
41.    West Side Story    1961
43.    King Kong    1933
44.    The Birth of a Nation    1915
45.    A Streetcar Named Desire    1951
47.    Taxi Driver    1976
50.    Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid    1969
51.    The Philadelphia Story    1940
52.    From Here to Eternity    1953
54.    All Quiet on the Western Front    1930
56.    MASH    1970
57.    The Third Man    1949
59.    Rebel Without a Cause    1955
62.    Tootsie    1982
63.    Stagecoach    1939
66.    Network    1976
68.    An American in Paris    1951
69.    Shane    1953
72.    Ben-Hur    1959
73.    Wuthering Heights    1939
74.    The Gold Rush    1925
76.    City Lights    1931
77.    American Graffiti    1973
79.    The Deer Hunter    1978
80.    The Wild Bunch    1969
81.    Modern Times    1936
82.    Giant    1956
83.    Platoon    1986
85.    Duck Soup    1933
86.    Mutiny on the Bounty    1935
88.    Easy Rider    1969
89.    Patton    1970
90.    The Jazz Singer    1927
92.    A Place in the Sun    1951
93.    The Apartment    1960
97.    Bringing Up Baby    1938
98.    Unforgiven    1992
99.    Guess Who's Coming to Dinner    1967
100.    Yankee Doodle Dandy    1942

Now, some of these I've seen parts of, just not the whole thing straight through (The Graduate, Grapes of Wrath, Raging Bull, Mr Smith, Tootsie, King Kong, Butch Cassidy, Network, American Graffiti, Platoon, Unforgiven).  But it's still very appalling.

So I'll post when I watch one.  Anyone can do this with me if they want (although, I think I'll avoid strict film club type activities since I don't want to steal any thunder from Cinemaniacs).  Feel free to mock me for never seeing _____________.  I'm also interested in finding out about other people's grievances.

I think other than the ones I refuse to see, I've seen pretty much ever movie on the AFI top 100 list. But I'll have to look again. I'm ashamed at all the Essential films you've never seen. But I have to ask, do you even like Westerns? Some people don't. And what about Musicals?

I do!  That's why it's inexcusable.  I love, LOVE spaghetti westerns, and my favorite movie, hands down is Sound Of Music.

I guess I have a few excuses (probably not very good).  My parents were not movie buffs, and I didn't start until I was able to get my own Blockbuster card.  My oldest kid was born when I was 22 (I'm 30 now), and I spend more time doing stuff with them.  Once they go to bed, I'll watch TV, but ever since high school, I've had a problem falling asleep if I start a movie after about 9:00.  I've started a few of these more times than I'd care to mention.  Since I want to give my full attention to a movie of this quality, I tend to put on a movie that I won't care about missing.

Just curious, which ones do you refuse to see?

I haven't seen Guess Who's Coming to Dinner.

I count 27 from your list that I haven't seen and there are some of those that I just have no desire to see.  I wouldn't go so far as to say I'd refuse to watch anything on the list though.

I haven't seen Guess Who's Coming to Dinner.

I think you can cross it off if you've seen the version with Ashton Kutcher.

I'm on my way.  I watched Taxi Driver last night.  A couple thoughts:
Harvey Keitel has beautiful hair.
This is the first time I've ever thought that Cybill Shepherd is good looking, but she still looked sleepy.
Jodie Foster was really great in this show.  I wonder if there's something I could do to impress her.

Which two movies should I watch this weekend?

Just because there is a legit "double feature" theme:

Platoon / Apocolypse Now

I have.  Overrated, if you ask me.  Some good performances, though.
Correction: the coat hanger should be upside down.

Part of me doesn't want to see Spencer Tracy look that old and frail.  I remember a documentary on Hepburn/Tracy which said something like Hepburn had to drag Tracy through the production of that movie because he was so infirm.

Well as I previously stated in another thread I don't generally watch R rated movies, but even if it wasn't R rated I would never want to ever see Chinatown, having already been scarred by what I have seen. :)

I can understand missing out on classic movies if parents didn't watch movies with you. It's hard when you don't get parental support.

Wow---what a hilarious double feature that would be!

So I was pretty bust this weekend, and I wasn't able to track down specific shows.  So I just watched what was streaming on netflix.

I can now cross off Duck Soup and Rebel Without A Cause.  I also put on Patton, but I fell asleep (but I loved what I saw, and can't wait to watch the rest).

Rebel Without A Cause was just weird.  I don't know yet if I liked it.  It certainly had a huge influence on future films and even the fashion at the time (T-shirt sales skyrocketed after the movie came out).  Philip J Fry's outfit was even based on Jim's.  I was shocked to find out that he was playing a high school kid in this show.  What I didn't like about it was that everyone acted like they were insane.  Jim makes a moo sound in class, so Buzz has to kill him?  Then they're buddies at the chicken fight?  And the guy from Perry Mason slaps his daughter for giving him a kiss?  I just didn't get it.  Every reaction in the first 2/3 of the movie seemed totally out of place or over exaggerated....but it got a bit more real in the end.

Duck Soup was great.  Lots of laughs.
