"Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file."

This happened after downloading the "transformers 2" riff. It never happened before, but in that defense it's been quite a while since I've downloaded a riff. is this a common problem and what can I do to fix it?

Update your Windows Media Player or use a different program to play it.

Windows Media player should play the file just find.  There are three things I can think of:

1.  You've downloaded an incomplete or corrupted file.  Delete it, and redownload.

2.  You are trying to play a .riff file in Windows media player (may not be this, transformers 2 may not have a .riff file)

3.  You are trying to play a zip file in windows media player.  Extract the MP3 from it before you play it.

option 1 is probably the most likely.
