Doctor Who?

Yes the whole story was explored so unless this is a prequel to the Burton film it is a remake.

Yea... except for bits and pieces from UHF stations when I was a kid... I don't think I've ever seen any of the sequels to the Heston movie... but I can't believe it's going to be a remake of any of those in the sense that it would share the same basic plot points. I suppose one them could have featured a genetically altered ape capable of grand strategic thinking... while I'm doubting it, I couldn't say for sure.

I dunno, just that one rough synopsis of the working script strikes me as levels of magnitude more interesting than Burton's version... which I didn't think was cover your eyes awful or anything... but it just reeked of "why bother?"

Also, let's not be retarded here. The Dark Knight isn't a remake of something that Adam West starred in 40 years prior....

Doctor Who?

The Adam West series was not the first time Batman had been on the screen, plus it was a parody.  I mean you wouldn't call Airplane a Remake of Airport.

Not really, it has parodic elements sure, but mostly because the execs didn't want anything too serious that might turn off potential viewers. The didn't use a bunch of characters who were already in the comics but who might be a tad dark for the little ones.

I haven't seen them all, so I can't be completely certain, but I think they do tell the origins of the whole PotA set-up.
Yeah movies three through five go back before Heston and his fellow astronauts arrive and show how the domination of the world by Apes occured. However there's a touch of the last Star Trek movie to it all; it still occurs but not in the way it had originally.

Pick your "reimaging" then... I don't care. Let's take Star Trek... Same premise, same characters, different direction. Is that a "remake" of something? I dunno... maybe it is... but the people involved brought something to the table beyond a simple rehash of 1960's morality plays.

Yes I mean it's not like it's doing it in the original French, woo but that book's iffy.

Doctor Who?

I would point out that Star Trek takes place in an alternate universe so it is not a remake any more then Mirror Mirror was a remake.  Also just because one remake works doesn't mean they all do.  Did you see The Avengers,or Wild Wild West,or Lost in Space,or Tim Burton's Planet of the Apes,or oh who am I kidding I don't really need to go on do I?

Except that everything from Escape on doesn't match what came before.  First two films, everyone except Zeus and a few others in the Scientific hierarchy was in the dark about the history of their planet.

The Cornelius who found the doll in the cave was completely different from the one who told the story of the ape who dared say "No" to his owners.  The first didn't know that there had been a human civilization on his planet.  The one in Escape tells everyone that they were all taught that there was civilized humans since childhood in some of the most blatant sequel-bating ever.

Maybe this time they figure they're going to do a prequel that matches the story told in the Heston film.....but wouldn't that just be another atomic war film?

West's "Batman" wasn't a parody. It was camp. There's a difference.

Must control fist of death......   ;)

Doctor Who?

What would be the plot of this prequel any way?  It would start with the earth getting nuked and then we would have to watch apes take thousands of years to learn to walk up right, and it would end with them building a few hunts.  That has exciting blockbuster written all other it.  Last but not least does anyone really believe that this will be anything other then just another dumb action blockbuster?

I would point out that this is a horseshit copout.

Heh... don't worry... I'm sure eventually Refresh Kirk will bang some green skinned alien and Refresh Bones will say "It's worse than that, he's dead Jim!" and they'll force Simon Pegg to put on 160 extra pounds so he can have an awkward seduction scene with Uhura and all will be right again in the Trek universe...  ;)

Look all this stuff about how I liked one remake so I have to like this one is beside the point.  Planet of the apes was a product of it's time.  It was a movie about nuclear war, take that away and you have an empty shell of a movie that just has fake apes and a much of mute humans running around.  What gave the movie it's soul is no longer of the time.  Star Trek has more of a timeless theme to it,it's about friendship,it's about duty, and it is about the need to learn about the world around us,those things have not changed since it was made.  That is just how I feel, you can mock me,you can yell about how I have a double standard all you want but that will not change how I feel.  Feel free to go on talking about how I am doing something wrong by not liking this idea,I will not be paying attention because I have said how I feel about this idea.  If you think I am a bad person, well I can live with that.

Well, I cetainly don't think that you are a bad person. I have damn near 2000 posts on this forum. That represents a metric fuckload of time I could have spent actually being productive. But I'm here talking to you about whether Adam West's work as Batman was a parody or not. So don't talk to me about being a bad person.... I'm about ready to hang myself if I could actually find a goddamn phone in this house that still has a cord.

All that said, Star Trek was every bit the "product of it's time" as Planet of the Apes. Just because Trek managed to cling to life for an additional 35 years has no bearing on the common origin. They both were born from cold war hysteria craze bullshit whether you want to buy into it or not.

Why can't the latest craze of "genetic experimentation" give new life to the Apes franchise?
