I thought about seeing Avatar in the theaters because I like 3D movies.  I was put off because, from the trailers, the story looked stupid and after seeing the full movie I see my judgements were accurate.

Normally I won't shy away from a 3D movie JUST because it's stupid.  I saw The Final Destination in the theater.  But I guess I just have a soft spot for some franchises, like Final Destination and Saw.

I think it bugs people because, as a group of MST3k (and as a sub-set, Rifftrax) fans, we've (almost all of us) willingly seen movies far, far worse than movies like Avatar... and none of these fell onto a "never go out of my way to see it" list, because we were very willing to see them provided there were robots making fun of them.

You may or may not have been one of those MST3k fans who was willing to sit through horrid, dreadful movies every week, but there's so many here who were... and they find it difficult to understand your stance, just as much as they find it difficult to understand people who just plain don't find MST3k funny.

Yes there are plenty of people out there like that, and I just can't wrap my mind around it.  :)
Well, due to its very nature I think RT samples a wider array of movie types and styles than MST ever could.  Because of that there are RTs I'll never get for myself - the horror ones.  I'm just not that into horror.  Doesn't mean I think they should stop doing them, just that the source material is not really my bag.

That's a good point, MST3K had to stick to movies they could broadcast, also there was no "effort" involved, you didn't have to buy the riff, buy or rent the DVD.   Having to spend your own time and money does raise the bar a bit on what you watch.

There are a bunch of them I haven't watched but keep an eye out in the bargain bins, but some I'll probably never get even if they are cheap.  For example if they ever did Pan's Labyrinth I wouldn't get it even though I have the DVD somewhere in my collection, got that movie based on all the great reviews and I just hated it, will never watch any part of it again.

There are movies I won't watch because I don't like the story or there's too much gore, but never pre-hated a movie based on the doucheyness of the people that made it, but to each their own... ;D

Definitely a point taken on the whole money spent on RT compared to MST.....  I for one will proudly state that I am simply going to rent and mix down my own copy of Avatar.  I refuse to buy this movie.  They got my money in the theater.

I thought it was an okay movie, and good enough to buy IF YOU LIKE THAT SORT OF MOVIE.  But I am not a sci-fi fantasy happy-good-feeling movie person.  I only saw it in the theater because I was dragged to see it.  I enjoyed it... just not enough to waste money on it that could go to a better movie OR an entire season of a TV show at walmart.
...and there he was, reigning supreme at number two.  The One... The Only... The Unabeefer.

Must it be pointed out that in MST3K, they had three host segments scattered throughout the movie, thus allowing you some time away from the unfettered crap that they were riffing, not to mention commercial breaks. Hell, even the Film Crew did a host segment.

Rifftrax doesn't have that luxury, thus meaning you have to sit through the entire crappy movie until your eyes bleed and you turn to your younger brother begging that he dig your eyes out with a spoon because you can't take any more New Moon and instead of mercifully putting you out of you misery he laughs and says I want you to suffer...  :speechless:

Host segments, ability to pause the DVD.  Is there a difference?

Well, with the host segments, you're progressing through the rest of the episode.

Plus you can fast forward the host segments and progress through the episode faster.
FINE

Darth Geek

Yeah, most of the host segments are quite good. Unless they are too Joel centric or are one of those "long buildup for one joke" type.
