All that needed to be typed into this article to prove to me this has a Razzie contender Bomb vibe to it is that the writers of the Garfield movies are attached to it.
Being a genocidal maniac is not one of my turn ons.

Is it weird to hear the Safety Dance in my head watching Game of Thrones?

Tripe

Nah, he's just reflexively in favour of anything people express reservations about.

please explain to me because I'd like to understand, why is this an issue?

CGI remakes of classic cartoons? You're in love with these?

No but them being made doesn't make any difference to me.

Doctor Who?

If you don't care one way or the other why even come into this thread?

Anyway, I'm not offended by any of the changes they want to make to Speedy's backstory (he never needed a backstory before though) I'm just offended by yet another lame sounding CGI/live action hybrid getting churned out.

Exactly.  Truly, nothing is more offensive than churning out childhood-memory-destroying garbage than for the sake of a quick buck.  Too often, people use the term "but it's a movie for children!" to defend mind-numbing crap.  Oddly enough, that was the defense I saw of someone who rated Beverly Hills Chihuahua on IMDB.  I rest my case.

*Drops into old man voice*  Damn it, when I was a kid, we didn't have your G-Forces and Spy Kids!  We had to make do with depressing and/or violent stuff like Secret of Nimh, Goonies, Neverending Story, and Big Trouble in Little China, and we were THANKFUL for it!
:D

Doctor Who?

Anyone remember the claymation Wind in the willows movie where when they took back Toad Hall they killed the weasels with swords and pistols?  I bet that wouldn't get made today.  Hey The Lone ranger had a pretty high body count for something aimed at kids.

Because I used to watch Speedy as a kid, I don't see how my being curious is less valid than impotent outrage.

Yeah whatever. Read the Wikipedia entry. It's not a racist cartoon, because it's popular in Latin America. It doesn't offend anybody. It was just briefly banned by an idiotic Cartoon Network executive obsessed with being PC.

But even though the minor characters don't matter, I think if they're going to change anything, they might as well get permission to use the character, and then make a completely different movie about a mouse who uses his speed to become a superhero. Why bother making a movie about Speedy anyway? What the hell is the movie even going to be about? A mouse running around avoiding a cat for two hours? They've tried that before. They should just use the general concept. There's no point using the character, because no sane adult would see the movie, and no kid would have ever heard of him.

part of me says "hey, what's the worst that could happen."

the other part answers back "remember Tom and Jerry the movie?"

the first part then gets very depressed because it does.

I think Ronin means this one:
Quote
The popular cartoon cat and mouse are thrown into a feature film. The story has the twosome trying to help an orphan girl who is being berated and exploited by a greedy guardian.

Because Tom and Jerry cooperating is at the heart of all those cartoons.

(And having just checked, Itchy & Scratchy & Marge predates the movie.)

Yup, that's the abomination.  Tom and Jerry working together, singing songs, and talking a lot.  Tom with the voice of the chubby guy from Spin City.

But then it wasn't a matter of being racially sensitive or anything, I guess they just thought a full movie full of Tom and Jerry level violence would be too much...and it would be...so it was a bad idea to make a movie.  Keep them in shorts, damnit!

There have been five direct-to-video Tom and Jerry movies that were made in the past ten years. They don't speak and generally act more like they did in the original cartoons. They were called "The Magic Ring,"  "Blast Off to Mars", "The Fast and the Furry", "Shiver Me Whiskers," and "A Nutcracker Tale." Did you guys see those? If so, what did you think of them?
