I like mutliple discs with the TV shows I buy.  For example, if an entire season of say Deadwood was one disc it would just feel really weak on my shelf.  I hope, assuming that DVD's aren't the standard format in say 7-8 years, that boxsets of TV shows will still come in badass boxes.  I totally agree with you in saying that the consumer would feel ripped off paying $60 for a single disc.  I would have a hard time doing that myself.  I'm no Joe six-pack, but damn it boxsets just look good.

For me the quality of Blu-ray/HD is surpassing what I care about as far as movie quality goes.  I'm fine with DVD and hope that the players from here on out will at least support DVDs. It is pretty unthinkable that in the future they wouldn't.

....nor will you be able to play regular DVDs on the new systems.

Not true at all. Both HD-DVD players as well as Blu-Ray are backwards compatible with standard DVDs.

dvd is good for me right now, HD movies are going to have to show a vast difference for me to want to convert... also, I dont have a HD tv set and wont for at least a couple more years :(

I certainly don't have a problem with that. I don't have any HD stuff myself (unless you count my cable box, which has the capability, so I can just subscribe to their HD channels when I'm ready), and I'm perfectly content to wait for the prices on HD-DVD and/or Blu-Ray to come down (or for somebody to make an affordable combo player, which would be the optimal way around this stupid format war).

But if you haven't had a chance to do a comparison demo, I strongly recommend it.

the way i see it, is sony has now a blu ray dvd player on the market that can play video games connect to the internet and do a whole slew of stuff,

If only their marketing dept hadnt gone insane they would have already crushed hd

Unfortunately, while the Playstation 3 is apparently an EXCELLENT Blu-Ray player (and less expensive than most current Blu-Ray players), as a game system, it still leaves a LOT to be desired. As one of my roommates put it, "there are five games for it right now, and THREE of them are Excitebike."

no as a game system its amazingly good.  It just has no games on it lol.  Time will help solve that though.

J-Proof

Honestly - I don't want /either/ form of hi-def DVD to win. I want some third party to come in and smack each developing company in the face, make them do trust falls with each other, and mend their relationship so that another really awesome UNIVERSAL form of sweet-action movie-watching can be available to the anxious public. The LAST thing I want is my confused mother staring at three versions of the same movie wondering which one to get me for Christmas. I can just see grandma getting incredibly frustrated about what player/monitor her grandchildren MIGHT have at home come birthday and graduation present-giving time....

And this spans well beyond just blu-ray / HD, the entire industry is developing at the right pace, but marketing and selling too fast....

And you can now get a deck that plays HD-DVD, Blue-Ray and standard DVD's.
The backwards compatability thing is a must in this day and age.

I think 'on the whole' preparation H is better...I mean I think people are tired of getting screwed over with technology upgrades (Microsoft, I'm looking at you!!!).

BTW, is the PS3 backward compatable with PS2 and PSone?

sarcasm_made_Easy

from what i understand, yes its backwards combatable.

combatable! I can just see the PS3 fighting the ps2 and psx!

But seriously, there are some issues with the PS3 not being able to play certain ps2 games. They have done firmware upgrades to address some issues.

For PS3 games, yes. However, as I've come to understand it, it handles PS2 games horribly. And I'm not talking about backwards-compatibility issues; I'm talking about the fact that it plays PS2 games through emulation (i.e. completely reliant on software rather than system hardware).

That is what the 360 does. You have to download a patch to play games and then it is only certain games that they have made patches for.

I suppose it bears mentioning at this juncture that, from what I've seen, the Wii plays GameCube games perfectly.  :)
