It's funny you should mention this. I've been working for some time on the theory that we're all mistaken when we try to view The Room as a comedy. I think a more appropriate filter to watch it through is that of a survival-horror videogame; more specifically, the kind that are already priced at $29.95 at launch. Consider the tropes of a sub-par survival-horror game, and see how The Room measures up:

Disturbing imagery? Check (the back-side view of Tommy Wiseau's thrusting haunches could, if you block out everything else in the frame, be easily mistaken for something out of Silent Hill).

Repetitive music? Check.

Use of same small number of set pieces? Check.

Terrible AI, whereby characters behave in ways that correspond with no sane person? Check.

Stiff, wooden performances from from bored-sounding "actors" who, one suspects, are not native speakers of the english language? Check, and double-Check.

Despite its low price, the inescapable feeling that you've wasted your money? Oh, mais oui.

I'm totally serious about this. But don't take my word for it. The next time you watch The Room, try to view it through the parameters I've described, and see if every single thing anyone does or says in the movie suddenly makes perfect sense.
"All I ask of you is one thing: please don't be cynical. I hate cynicism -- it's my least favorite quality and it doesn't lead anywhere.
Nobody in life gets exactly what they thought they were going to get. But if you work really hard and you're kind, amazing things will happen."

I think you may have solved the riddle of how Tommy Wiseau raised the money to make the film.....he designed all of those games.
