No one likes Marmaduke.  Every single one is literally "Ha ha, he is big and that causes problems!"

I have to step up here and defend Garfield. I read it when I was young and I still read it today. I read the entire funnies page, actually. It's a nice break-time-at-work ritual. Granted, Garfield's been cycling the drain for a while, but every now and then it still hits the mark where a lot of comics NEVER hit the mark. Like Marmaduke, here.

I shouldn't say people hate Garfield, but it is definitely just coasting along for the same reason Marmaduke is still in the comics:  Legacy.  Unfortunately, the kind of people who read the legacy strips are the kind who will complain the loudest when they are cancelled, so they stay right where they are.  At least Jim Davis tried to spice it up a little:  Jon finally got a girlfriend at some point. 

But then I stopped caring again.
