Halloween 3: Season Of The Witch Could Have Been A Classic

This is the halloween film a lot of fans hate, because it took a different direction, and didn't have Michael Myers in it. Now i'll agree it really had nothing to do with the Halloween series, but it did have an original idea to continue it, and make it a series all of it's own.
After Carpenter did the first Halloween he didn't really want any sequels made, but rushed out a sequel and then considered himself done. However when it was continued, a new idea was brought to the drawing table.

Make the halloween series focus on different supernatural events, each film that would have been brought out would have featured some different event that happened every halloween, it got away from focusing on a killer that just went around killing people, and went to something new. The film isn't perfect, it's really cheesy, many times over the top, and is very much disliked among the fans, due to it sharing the Halloween title.

The film bombed and it was decided to bring Michael back into the series and the rest is history, a long line of sequels that got worse and worse as they continued being made until the series was dropped completely.

However I think if it didn't share the Halloween title, it could possibly be a classic among horror fans, like most classic horror films it hasn't aged well, it gets cheesier as the years progress and audiences continue wanting more, and it's effects continue to be outdone by the ever advancing effects that is relied on heavily today. However this film is a favourite of mine in the horror genre, and in the halloween series, because of what it was trying to do. For those who dislike it simply because it shares the Halloween title, just try watching it as a movie and not as part of a series, it'll have it's flaws but you may find you'd appreciate it more.

Yeah, check it out if you haven't yet.

Eh, I think Halloween 3 would just be yet another subpar horror movie from the 80s with a silly premise if it hadn't been associated with the Halloween franchise. I will say, though, that at least it has an original idea in it (however silly that may be) and something actually happens. In my opinion that puts it head and shoulders above the Michael Myers movies, but that's just me.

I think the big difference if Season of the Witch had been it's own movie instead of part of the Halloween series is that it would be forgotten instead of hated. It's just not a good movie no matter who is or isn't in it. The best thing to ever happen to it has been Hor-RIFF-ic Productions.

I do like the concept of a series of movies that surround the Holliday of Halloween and don't neccessarily correspond to eachother, making each sequel unique. It's just that I never liked any movie I've seen in the old Halloween series. Maybe they should try so ething like this with a Trick R Treat movie series. The first movie was already an anthology on it's own of four unrelated stories, so either continue that pattern or have a new movie of one complete new story. I'd buy into that from that creative team.

I actually like Halloween III a lot.  It's a heck of a lot more creative than the carbon copy slasher films of its time period.  It's got some awesomely gruesome kills (the manual decapitation scene in particular really stuck with me as a kid.)  And the whole thing is just so dang weird that it achieves a surreal, dreamlike atmosphere.

Phantasm shares a lot of the same qualities, and that's rightly regarded as a genre classic.  That's not to say that Season of the Witch rises to that level, but I believe it would be a lot more highly regarded if not for its ties to the Halloween franchise.

I admit I kind of want to see it.  I always find these horribly failed bizarro horror movies always have weirdly scary moments in otherwise bad flicks.  After all, I feel often times there's a thin line between funny and freaky, so sometimes something intended to be freaky is funny but somehow spins right back around to creepy.  It's an ouroboros of mixed emotions.  It's sort of like at the end of Troll 2.  It's almost more creepy that the goblins are rubbing portions of mom on the goblin's masks than just eating her.  OR am I crazy?  Or both?
