Also, I was wondering if you're going to replace the weapons once they've been used since the players would then know to pick the best ones.

No the point was each round the values change, the contest is really won or lost on the blind selection at the beginning. The fun (at least I though it would be) was in a)describing the rounds and b) people's reactions to the rounds. But nobody did the second part. Bit of a damp squib all told.

You know, David Tennant really would be perfect for the lead role in the murder mystery screenplay I've started to imagine myself writing.

Well, no offense but that's because you know nothing about swords. The Katana is the most overrated blade I can think of, primarily by people who know nothing about swords.

Katanas are very effective offensive swords, under specific circumstances and when used in a specific ways. But as defensive weapons they are terribly ineffective. A swift slash and cumbersomely long weapon forged from soft steel will almost always lose to a more versatile and shorter one forged from stronger steel.

It isn't even the most useful blade in a the arsenal of a Samurai (also vastly overrated).

No it's not crap, it's actually a very good blade in certain circumstances, like any blade. It does however have significant shortcomings that people who've only really seen the fantasy version of the sword seem to be unaware of.
