Download Limits?

I was wondering if there are limits on the number of times you can download a file? Digging through the forums seemed to indicate 3, but I was able to download one of the Plan 9 Live files 5+ times (or is that an exception?) That post that said 3 was an older post, but since there is a times downloaded listed on the page, I assumed that number indicated something. I can't find anything on the main site that answers this question.

During the first version of the main website, they did have download limits, which were at 3.  However, almost 2 years ago, they instituted another version of the website, which vastly redesigned the structure of purchases and download privileges.  As of now, once you purchase something, they show up in your "My Files" area, and you can download as many times as you want, and you can even use download accelerators( something the first version of the website would't allow).

Long story short:  There are no download limits, DL as many times as you want.

Awesome! I was a little concerned about there being a listing of how many times a file was downloaded, but I guess that was just a holdover or something. Thanks for the info!

Why do you need to download something five times?

I hit one of those limit messages the other day.  I think I'd downloaded from 4 locations: 3 different desks I've worked at (one job), and home.

Anyway, it said I couldn't download it (Harry Potter 2, I think)..

I download repeatedly on the work computers rather than carry around a file of stored Rifftrax.  They're stored on the home computer.

There is some sort of filter in place by IP addresses to make sure accounts don't get shared.  It shouldn't be a problem for anyone who uses the site normally.

One question, I'm curious. Maybe this is a fringe issue. But why are you downloading from 3 different computers at work, only to download again at home? Not to bash your method. I'm just legitimately curious why anyone would need to do that.

Most of the time I work in one place at one computer, or I'm on the home computer.  I work in a college dorm and sometimes fill in at other dorm desks.  These are all graveyard shifts and as such are a good time and place to watch a Rifftrax.  At first I carried around a thumb drive with all my Rifftrax, but when I realized that the service would (seemingly) let me download as needed, that became more convenient than the thumb drive, which I would occasionally forget.

I actually don't really NEED to download repeatedly at home since I've stored them on DVDs as data.  My drive space is fairly limited and when you own 90% of the Rifftrax output, it starts to take up space.  It's more convenient just to hit the bookmark and download than dig up the disc.

It's a really nice service to be able to repeatedly download from wherever, but certainly not a service I demand or expect.  I just didn't know there was a limit (although I probably should've expected it).

I'm sure it's a fringe issue that few people run up against.

I want Rifftrax to thrive.  That's why I pay for it.  I introduce lots of people to Rifftrax, but I'd never let them download from my account.

Thanks for the details. Makes sense.

Yeah we don't really get too many people complaining about the issue unless they are sharing. It's not something we can really remove - it has to stay there just to cover our asses, so to speak. But we can always reset your limits if the need arises.

I know this thread is old, but its still in the first half page of topics.

I noticed that there are now a 5 DL limit for newly purchaced files.  Is that a permanent change?  I'm not an abuser, you can check my downloads and most of them are at 1, but having new limits placed on me just rubs me the wrong way.

If there is a problem with people giving out their account info, just ban them.  Why limit the rest of us?

Edit:

Ok, i see that i am at 1/unlimited downloads for a new file I bought.  I was noticing the new Addresses column.  What's that?

The limits should be unlimited downloads, 5 (IP) addresses - to prevent the download links from getting posted to forums and other sites. :)
