Okay guys... first off... earlier I posted it looked fine. Silly me I had accidentally renamed it on my computer so I was looking at the wrong video in reference to the problem.... but I have good (and bad) news.

After further inspection, it appears the video was in fact encoded incorrectly. When the file was authored it appears they 'converted'  the actual video to 16x9, but the information in the file was flagged as 4x3. So in short, the black bars are actually part of the video and CAN NOT be removed (unless you feel brave in your video editing skills). There are three things that can be done.

Solution 1: Change the mpg flag from 4x3 to 16x9 (simplest method)
-download http://www.videohelp.com/download/batchdemux0.14.zip (Batch demux)
-Run the program and open up the directory were your mpg is located
-select the mpg file and click "run demultiplex" (it will take a sec before its done... just wait)
-Once it is done you will have two files (an audio and video portion)
-download restream (http://www.videohelp.com/download/ReStream_v090.zip)
-open the new mpg file created by the batchdemux by clicking the folder icon at the very top of the program.
-You should see 4:3 next to "Aspect". Change that to "16:9".
-Click "Write" (to create the new file)
Now you will have proportional video... but the black bars will still be there!! If you don't mind that... then just plug the video and audio into your favorite multiplexer and create your DVD that way.

Solution 2: Scrap the video (Best Method but most work)
-Use the Batchmux program (as listed above) to separate your video and audio files for the rifftrax video.
-Download the original source video at  http://www.archive.org/details/ShyGuy1947 (Be sure to use the MPEG2 link for the 376mb file
-separate the source video as you did the rifftrax video with batchmux again.
-now use your favorite multiplexer to join the audio from the rifftrax to the video with the source file... and create your dvd

Solution 3: Have rifftrax fix It so we can re-download it!

I hope that helps clear up what the problem is... oh and a side note... I have no idea how Bairman got a correctly encoded video file.

Yeah, I don't understand your guys problems.  I downloaded mine right away when it came out and it looks like this:  (vlc player)

After checking the Shy Guy board, it seems there was a problem with the initial release having a second or two missing from the beginning so the file was redone.  The original with the chopped beginning is the one I had, so I've redownloaded and the new file does indeed look squished.

BTA... you probably have the original too.

A-HA! So we aren't crazy!!!!!

Well, that's still an open question...  :D
but at least we now understand why some have a squished version while others have one with the correct aspect ratio.

Really, someone just needs to unsquish 2 seconds at the beginning and give it to me.

Just to add an interesting footnote, I went to archive.org and downloaded a few different versions of the "Shy Guy" short from there.  All of the ones I checked seem to be missing a few seconds at the start.  So it seems the rifftrax guys tracked down a different version?

You're right. Kinda weird. If you re-author or resync it to the archive version... you'll have to do a bit a fixing to get it to sync right. Its not really that much so I don't see it as a major problem for those that are re-authoring, but those that want it already synced... you're going to have to wait for rifftrax to fix it (or do my 16:9 flag fix mention earlier) for an ugly fix.

I looked at using the archive.org version, but the audio track was very different from the rifftrax version. The archive audio would wander back and forth (probably random glitches), making it difficult to sync up without a lot of effort.

I'm in the process of 'un-squishing' the video file to fix this issue once and for all. Once its done encoding I'll post it (probably in a couple of hours)

**note this will only be the video and not the audio**

Okay guys... here is the video in its proper aspect ratio encoded correctly. No audio is included, just the corrected video.  This is not from the archive website but rather a fixed version of the video our rifftrax folks used as their source material. You might notice the video is shorter than the rifftrax audio... reason is because there is no rifftrax logo at the end of the video.
