The fans ruined the movie

They could be sucking up, but they are also never shy about saying what lines were theirs in those tracks. And Whedon does have a rather noticeable style. Be that as it may, without having been a writer on one of his shows, I can't say for certain if they're fawning or just saying it like it is. But when I get there, I'll let you know.

Ah, on the plus side this reminded me of something to post in another thread, so that's good.

People approach the writers? As, recognize them and cross the street to say hi? Geeze! Charlie Kaufman barely gets recognized in public!
Dammit, Maverick! Why don't you play by the rules?!

"Joel, what's a Harringway?"
"About a pound."

It's probably at sci-fi conventions that it happens.

But it's possible it could just be an everyday happenstance:

Snakes on a Plane. The fans acually ruined it before it came out. Now that was a first. When you first heard about this movie its utter audacity made it sound brilliant. But, then it came out and it completely dissapointed. The movie was too self-conscience and ended up trying too hard. It seemed like a 90 minute SNL sketch that took itself too seriously.

I disagree here. The fans "made" that movie. All the early parodies on the internet influenced the studios to change their creative direction. If it wasn't for the fans (and the pleas of Sam Jackson) the movie would have instead been titled "Pacific Air Flight 121". The fans can also be thanked for giving us the single most memorable movie line in 2006. (You know the one.)

pirates of the carribeean, i enjoyed the first film in the series well enough but the fans are so damn annoying about it especially the college age girl fans obsessing over johny and orlando.  every girl on my dorm floor was absolutely in love with this film and its lame sequels it got on my nerves immensely.  i almost snapped when invited to a facebook group called id rather be on a pirate ship than at school to which i desperately wanted to reply yes i would love to be on a unhygenic pirate ship filled with criminals who love to rape women with all you girls instead of here at school, sadly i am to polite and just rejected the invite.

come to think of it pirates 2 fits into the other version of this thread that movie made me dislike the series as a whole and i still havent seen part III.

I thought that was just "buccaneers", not pirates in general.

That said, I'd put Jack Sparrow soundly in the buccaneer category.

If I could sum up each Pirates of the Caribbean movie with a sentence:

Pirates 1: "That was awesome!"

Pirates 2: "God, I love Bill Nighy."

Pirates 3: "What the hell was that?"
Dammit, Maverick! Why don't you play by the rules?!

"Joel, what's a Harringway?"
"About a pound."

Doctor Who?

Pirates 3: Pirates have Laws and kings?!

What's the flipping point of being a Pirate?!

Yeah, but with Keith Richards as king, every day would be a semi-psychotic, drug-induced party! :highfive:

I do think that Pirates are a bit too, well, organized. Just like the whole "thief king" dynamic. It doesn't really work, because such things are defined by acting outside of established social order.

Also, I thought the "inspirational speech" really blew. I mean COME ON. This is a PIRATES movie! Why not something snappy and funny, that appeals to the baser nature of the audience? It wouldn't be that hard.

In her position, I would have said "Okay! The British armada is heading over, and if we stand and fight, they'll try to shoot us full of holes. However, if we try to run away, they'll still shoot at us, but we won't have cannons pointing on them, so lets kill the bastards before they kill us!"

Also, no kraken= sad. =(

I actually liked a lot of part 3, but I have to admit Fuzzy, your version of the speech would have been better.

Thanks. ^_^

I enjoyed much of part 3 too. I just thought the speech stood out because it conflicted so strongly with the Bucaneer tone of the film.
