Relaxing Dragon

BBQ Platypus

Pretty lackluster ceremony this year.  I wouldn't blame Hugh Jackman for that, though.  They set it up all wrong.  They were playing music in the background while awards were being given, which was annoying as fuck.  They had other actors come up and describe the nominees' performance (as well as telling them all how great they were) rather than showing clips and letting the performance speak for itself.  They gave a couple awards to the wrong movie (what kind of crack were the voters smoking when they decided that the song from Slumdog was better than "Down to Earth?") and made pathetic attempts to try to address the inevitable viewer indifference by including "tributes" to the kinds of movies they always, ALWAYS ignore (i.e. comedies).

Steve Martin and Tina Fey were easily the highlight of the show.  Maybe they should have Steve host again next year.  Or maybe Conan O'Brien.  Hugh wasn't terrible, but I don't think he'll ever be coming back to host again.
Correction: the coat hanger should be upside down.

Am I the only one who hates it when Sean Penn wins ANYTHING? He irritates me to no end.

Woo for Kate Winslet and Slumdog. Boo to whoever told Sofia Loren that she could leave her hotel room looking like that.
Dammit, Maverick! Why don't you play by the rules?!

"Joel, what's a Harringway?"
"About a pound."

Doctor Who?

Is there some place where we can get a quick rundown of all the winners?

They only ever seem to mention a few  on the morning news.

So tonight I saw the following.

Movie which I would like to see get the Oscar

Movie that I think will probably get the Oscar.

The synopses are from the official Oscar site, be blown away by the care and attention to detail that they put into them. ::)

Animated
Lavatory Lovestory
QuoteA lonely lavatory attendant finds a bouquet of flowers in her tip jar.

La Maison en Petits Cubes (House of Small Cubes)
QuoteIn a world gradually flooding with water, an old man adapts to changing circumstances and looks back on his life.

Oktapodi
QuoteAn octopus fights to keep his beloved out of the cooking pot.

Presto
QuoteA carrot triggers a war of wits between a magician and his hungry bunny.

This Way Up
QuoteA series of misfortunes befalls a pair of undertakers on their way to the cemetery.

Live Action
Auf der Strecke (On the Line)
QuoteA department store security guard who is drawn to one of his co-workers makes a fateful decision.

Grisen (The Pig)
QuoteA man facing surgery finds comfort in the painting of a pig hanging in his hospital room.

Manon Sur le Bitumen (Manon on the Asphalt)
QuoteThe proximity of death brings a young woman a new perspective on life.

New Boy
QuoteA nine-year-old African boy begins his first day of school in Ireland.

Spielzeugland (Toyland)
QuoteIn 1942, a German boy believes that his Jewish neighbors are going to Toyland.

Not so sure about how the live action nod will go.

Wooo I predicted two of the awards a while back, admittedly I hedged on the live action short but frankly both of the potentials I identified were crappy and dull enough to win over the delightful and actually relevant Greisen.

WALL-E winning neither of the sound awards is almost as bad as it not being nominated for best picture.

I too was pissed off.

Anyone else press the mute button on their remote during the musical number with Beyonce? I thought that thing would never end.

Especially since the entire sound of Wall-E was done by Bobby McFerrin's mouth!
