wooop wooop wooop stupid movie alert

http://www.guardian.co.uk/film/2008/nov/07/spielberg-smith-oldboy-remake

QuoteSteven Spielberg and Will Smith are planning to collaborate on a remake of Park Chan-wook's Oldboy, according to Variety. The pair, who have been looking for a project to work on together for some time, are said to be in early discussions about reworking the acclaimed Korean thriller, which centres on a man who is kidnapped and held in a dirty cell for 15 years without explanation.

Smith would play the imprisoned man - Choi Min-sik in the 2003 original - who is freed just as he is about to put an escape plan into practice. He is given money, clothes and a mobile phone and sets out to discover who stole his life from him in order to take revenge.

A direct remake would seem to be particularly dark territory for both Spielberg and Smith, as the original contains a number of family-unfriendly themes and sequences, such as the famous live octopus sushi scene. Spielberg is currently said to be searching for a writer.

And here I thought the Gwyneth Paltrow/Keira Knightley version of King Lear was the worst thing coming out in the next couple of years.

Say what now?

They'll be playing the daughters right? That's actually not bad casting. I'm not overly fond of Paltrow but she could be OK as Regan.

This is Steven "Not Hip Enough For Tank Girl" Spielberg?

Wow, I think we would be better off if everyone just watched the original "Old Boy" and not bother with the remake.

bratpop

Maybe they'll wise up, and the "movie" will just be Will Smith WATCHING Old Boy like he watched Shrek in I Am Legend.

Hebs

Not to be mean or anything, but I don't think Spielburg has the stones to do the stuff in the original.

The director is not going to be the problem here, you guys. WILL SMITH.

WILL SMITH <------------

I agree, Will Smith is less than a line of hyphens.

Crow T. Robot 666

This needs to happen, only because Mike, Bill and Kevin would perform a truly epic riffing here.

Who's the third actress?
As far as I know Goneril hasn't been cast yet.

A Laura Linney or a Catherine Keener would be good but would they be out of the Hollywood age range?

See I was thinking Tilda Swinton, but then I think everything's improved with a little dash of Tilda. :)

ooh good call.

A more suitable Hollywood choice would be Naomi Watts which wouldn't be so bad either, I think.
