I was delighted to hear about RiffTrax on, surprisingly enough, The Force-Cast podcast.  I've been a big fan of Mystery Science Theater 3000 and a fan club member since the early '90s, and I've been heart broken that new movies have not been coming out.  RiffTrax obviously helps to satisfy that desire, and it actually allowed me to say something I never thought I'd say: I bought a Britney Spears movie.  :o

I also wanted to take this opportunity to let people know about some AppleScripts I created to make viewing movies and RiffTrax a little easier on a Mac.  For now I have two AppleScripts available at http://rifftrax.atomicpowered.net and I will be working to enhance these and provide some more in the future.  Eventually I want to create something that will help you sync up the movie playing in DVD Player with the RiffTrax in iTunes, but for now the two AppleScripts I have are:

  • Pause or Resume
  • Advance/Rewind "n" Seconds

What these do should be pretty obvious, but please give them a try and let me know what you think!

Welcom Atom!

It sounds like you will be right at home here!

Your AppleScripts sound pretty cool. Anything that makes viewing RiffTrax easier is always welcome.

Hope to hear more from you in the forum...

Whoa (Reeves). Welcome, welcome, welcome.

Being able to pause BOTH the Rifftrax and the movie at the same time, as well as any other synch technologies, should deserve a RiffTrax Recognition Trophy the like of which has never been seen before!

I've had better results with simpler applescripts, like

tell application "DVD Player"
play dvd
end tell

tell application "iTunes"
playpause
end tell

One thought: it might be easy to create an applescript studio application to manage syncing.  Maybe a remote control style interface...

Official BBQ Platypus "Welcome to Insert Forum Name Here" Cookie-Cutter Form Letter:

Greetings, New Poster(s)!  As of now, my feelings toward you are completely neutral! May they remain neutral or better for many a month, before you say something that annoys me slightly until about a week later when I forget about it! Then, may they remain neutral again!
Correction: the coat hanger should be upside down.

Here's a quick and dirty 'go to sync point' script:

tell application "DVD Player"

set theSecondsPrompt to "DVD sync point (minutes)?"

set theNumRewindSecondsClick to display dialog theSecondsPrompt default answer "0"
set bob to ((text returned of theNumRewindSecondsClick) * 60)

set theSecondsPrompt to "DVD sync point (seconds)?"

set theNumRewindSecondsClick to display dialog theSecondsPrompt default answer "0"
set numRewindSeconds to (text returned of theNumRewindSecondsClick) + bob
set elapsed time to numRewindSeconds
pause dvd

set theSecondsPrompt to "iTunes sync point (minutes)?"

set theNumRewindSecondsClick to display dialog theSecondsPrompt default answer "0"
set bob to ((text returned of theNumRewindSecondsClick) * 60)

set theSecondsPrompt to "iTunes sync point, in seconds?"

set theNumRewindSecondsClick to display dialog theSecondsPrompt default answer "0"
set numRewindSeconds to (text returned of theNumRewindSecondsClick) + bob

end tell

tell application "iTunes"
set player position to numRewindSeconds
pause
end tell

tell application "DVD Player"
play dvd
end tell

tell application "iTunes"
playpause
end tell

Am I the only one here who thinks that "Apple Scripts" sounds like the name of a lost George Harrison song?

BathTub

Wouldn't that be more like the a lost Beatles Film? The Funeral of Paul.
