Re: The Phantom Tollbooth, I recall loving the book, but not caring for the movie, despite being a Chuck Jones fan. Havent seen it since sixth grade, though.

I only own Season One of Rocky and Bullwinkle so far, so at this point I might as well sell it and get the full collection.

Doctor Who?

I've never seen this but heard it mentioned so many times on MST3K...thought someone would like to know.

The Phantom Tollbooth is being released by Warner Archive.

Also, good news/bad news for Bullwinkle fans....

If you haven't bought any seasons of the show yet, this is coming out January 4th.

The bad news: the price is $99** and no announcement (so far) of the fifth season selling separately.  Even for those who waited....when you can currently get the first four seasons for under $50 total....this price is a real slap in the face.  The extras look cool of course but this takes "double dipping" too far.

(** This might be suggested retail.  Google Shopping shows that DVD Empire and CD Universe list it for the mid $70's...Barnes & Noble for $85.  But Amazon, Target and Walmart are all sticking with $99)

Wonder how long those of us who have been buying them all along will now have to wait to complete our set?

EDIT:  And Warner just sent me an email about this....

"In this fondly remembered animated series..."   :o  That some of us didn't even know existed....  :D

First 400 pre-ordered copies will be autographed by James (The Killer Shrews) Best!!!!

Govern yourselves accordingly.

I bought the first four seasons of Rocky and Bullwinkle on their own and now they hit me with this?!

They should have a program where people can trade in their seasons 1-4 boxsets and pay $30 to get the complete series.

Oh and when is Disney going to release Better off Ted season 2?  It's bad enough that the show was canceled but now I can't even get the whole series on DvD.

Damn, damn, damn, damn, damn!

They're finally going to re-release Head remastered, letterboxed with commentary from The Monkees (Well, three out of four - Jeez, Nez, don't you want your thoughts on this preserved for film history? You usually believe you're the expert on everything.).....and it has to be in a Criterion set of Bob Rafelson, Bert Schneider and Steve Blauner films that costs $75!

I know these are all iconic films.  Very good films.  Just don't need to own them.  Ah, well.   :-\

Maybe they plan on single DVD releases after the newness of the set wears off?

With Criterion that's really unlikely, and if it does happen it probably wont be for years once they've sold a lot of the BBS sets. I think it's happened a couple times with bigger films in a set (maybe Seven Samurai), so if there were a film that was going to be released by itself it'd probably be The Last Picture Show or Easy Rider. If you do have the $80 though, Criterion is always fantastic so the supplements and presentation of all these films will be the best.

What he said.

And I know that for what this costs it's going to be worth every penny.  I've got Criterion discs of M, Brazil and The Third Man.  Wonderful stuff.

For that matter, it's seven films - $10 and change per film for Criterion is a damn good price...if you're into all of the films included.

The only film there that I've watched more than once in all these years (of the ones I've seen) is Head.

Maybe they'll have each film on it's own disc and I can find someone who'll either go in on it with me or buy it afterward with a disc missing?   ;)

That's... a really great set.  :)

Like iv3rdawg said, there's probably some great supplemental stuff on there, especially considering most of the important people involved are still around.

Just the list on Amazon makes it look remarkable.  The documentaries included are all from 2009 and before but good to have them all in one place. It mentions commentary for every film but not if they're original to this disc (Easy Rider features Dennis Hopper which I suspect would be from a previous release unless they've been working on this set for a long while).

Who knows?  I may turn out to like Drive, He Said and A Safe Place....

(btw, I know there's possibly Netflix and then DVD Shrink & Decrypter....I just wanted to get a proper copy when someone finally did right by the movie)

I have Easy Rider with a Dennis Hopper commentary (though its a region 2 one).  If it's the same commentary, it's quite good.

You don't have to sell me on it....seen the film and think it's great and would love to hear the commentary.

Assuming I don't go through another spate of unemployment sometime soon, I know I'll end up buying it.  In fact - show you how weird I am - I may end up getting it on BD even without owning a player. So that I'll have the movie when I can finally find an affordable player that doesn't look like it was made by Fisher-Price.....

Because that's another thing about Criterion....they have an unfortunate habit of losing licensing and having to pull titles....

All of those movies were just picked up by Criterion, so they will probably have them for a while like they did for their 3 Blu-rays that they lost (The Third Man, The Man Who Fell to Earth and Pierrot le Fou). But yeah, if there's a Criterion that's been recently released and you want it, it's just best to get it when it's released to avoid having it go OOP which is sad because Criterion (and Disney) is probably the best distributing company out there in terms of presentation. And when other distributors pick up the rights the editions they do never match Criterions.

Sad, isn't it....when Criterion's proved time and again that there's a market for DVDs at these prices when they're done with this much care...and maybe only Kino really ran with the idea.

But there was just something on the news about Overstock.com being misleading about their prices....   ;)

However, that page does confirm what I wrote.  We'll have to see who is right and who is going to have to make some adjustments.

Maybe this should go in the RRRRAAAARRRRGGGGHHHH!!!! thread. WHERE IS THE MUPPET SHOW SEASON 4?!
