Trick or Treat for Bert I. Gordon!

Alright. This might be the last year I'm staying with my family for halloween. I'm too old and scruffy looking to go trick or treating, and I don't really enjoy halloween parties or know of any I might be invited to. I want to do something big.

Soooo, I thought, I'm gonna do something that the kids will never forget. I want to do something that will make the neighbor's king-sized candybars pale in comparison.

I'm giving out DVDs for halloween. ^_____^

Needless to say, I'm not going overboard. I don't have the budget or the inclination to hand out special-edition copies of Alien or a poltergiest triple-feature. I'm going to be dispensing stuff that's cheap. No problem. There exist many DVDs online that are only $1 each.

Here's where I run into the problem. I want spooky, or at least thematically appropriate, DVDs, but I'm giving these out for halloween, to kids, some of which well be 5 or 6. I don't want to traumatize some little toddler in a pumpkin costume with a copy of Cannibal Holocaust or Orgy of the Dead. Ideally I'd want something in the cheesy b movie area, probably with some monsters, or mystery and suspsense, but relatively free of sex and gore. I'm setting House on Haunted Hill as my upper limit there, old Basil Rathbone sherlock holmes films, and any Gamera movies as general indicators of tone. Some of the most readily available public domain horror/creature/spooky flicks, like Night of the Living Dead, are definately off limits.

I'm having some trouble with the grey zone. There's only so many films I can sift through, and so many DVDs I can find for one buck. This is where I turn to you, people of the forum, for help.

What are some movies I can get for a buck or two that aren't too ghastly for young trick-or-treaters? Where are general places I can find DVDs for under five dollars? Of the movies http://www.oldies.com/collection-view/99-Cent-DVD-Sale.html here, have any of you seen them, and are there any you can vouch for as young viewer compatable?

Much Thanks, Fuzzy Necromancer.

I've seen a few of those and of those that I've seen I don't think any meet your criteria.

Slipstream maybe, not sure it'd be an enjoyable viewing though  :-\

Yaaar. It's difficult. =/

I did get lucky with the Oldies.com Triple Feature discount sale. They had Sherlock Holmes triple feature, an outer space feature with Assignment Outer Space, Prehistoric Planet, and Warning From Space, and a monster feature with night of the blood beast, giant leeches, and Gamera the Invincible, but those were all one per customer. I thought i managed to order 6 of the first two, but they didn't come that way in the mail, and my online reciept still says I payed the full 6 DVD price, and baah.

I've got some stock, and I know of some public domain films that make good canidates. =/ I just want to be sure I won't run out early.

Try all the dollar stores and Target has a $1 section that has DVDs sometimes.

That's where I found these:

Also things like Star Trek bloopers and cartoons collections.

(yeah, Davey and Goliath could get kind of creepy)

You might also try you library.  Ours has this "Friends of the Library" thing where they sell used books and DVDs and I got these that way for $1 or less

Those ones on the Oldies.com site....don't know that they're kid oriented at all

Tripe

What's wrong with Davey and Goliath?

I'd have loved getting a Sherlock Holmes dvd when I was little, mind you I was a strange little boy.

I think the Godzilla/Gamera movies might be cool for little kids.

Just kidding.

Well, there was the one about the strange shoe repairman that Davey thought kidnapped Sally....   ;)

Yeah. My little library has a book and movie selling hting, but the selection is small, and it's mostly VHS. I think if you gave a kid today a VHS tape he wouldn't know what to do with it.

Shame really, cuz the library's got The Wolfman, Dracula, & The Mummy from Hammer Horror.

Thanks for the suggestions Duck. I think the upper too seem a bit downer, but it's good to know where to-

o.0 Okay, who would want a DVD featuring atom age vampires, revolt of the zombies, AND Casper? That's a might weird conjuction there.

That's how they used to show them in the theaters until the late 50's....a newsreel, a cartoon, a serial maybe, a feature and a b-picture.   ;)

Hmmmmm, is it legal to download a public domain movie, burn them on DVDs and give them out?

If so, I think that will eliminate your cost problem.

I am sure the parents will view the DVDs first just to make sure you did not burn porn in the middle of it.

ScottotD

Davey and Goliath would make you the weird religious guy in your street... although I think some parents would be suspicious of a single guy giving DVDs to kids anyway.

Plan 9?  I would've loved someone to give me NotLD when I was 7.

I thought Plan 9 wasn't actually public domain.  ???
