QuoteAh! "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" was also on. That was a pretty good movie also =)

Off topic but, you liked that movie? Have you read the books? I'm a huge Hitchhiker's Guide fan and I have to say, I was sorely disappointed by the movie.  I was so excited to see it that it's one of the few movies I actually paid to see in the theaters (I generally hate going to theaters because, imagine this, people talk during the films and it annoys me).

I have friends who haven't read the books who did like the movie so I guess it could have been a good movie and maybe I'm biased by the books.  It's hard to separate them.  I was just expecting more.  I did sing the intro song "Good Bye and Thanks for All the Fish" in my head for days after watching it. That's something.

I have yet to find someone who liked the books first and then the movie but I only know a handful of people who get it when I snark "42" after a question or why I care about towel day (in other words, my real life friends are illiterate morons).

I've read, I think, all the books, listened to the radio series, watch the TV show (hated that), not played the old text game. But still enjoyed the film.  Not saying there weren't elements I didn't like, but still enjoyed it.

Lol - yes I love the book, and I see how it needed to be filmed the way it was =)

Books, of course, are the heart and soul of creativity and barely any movies come close to being as good as the book (if the book is good that is).

The movie I most clearly remember seeing on a plane for the first time is "Pay It Forward." Great cast, mostly; I like almost everything Spacey has done, and Helen Hunt and Sixth Sense kid are both very good actors in the right movie.

This was not the right movie. It was AWFUL. I don't even want to see it riffed, because then people might buy some copies. I want to see the negatives burned and every copy of the dvd used to make a Agrajag-style statue of hatred of those responsible. It was a VERY BAD FILM.

I too, mostly enjoyed the Hitchhiker's movie.  I've read all the books (first two were great with diminishing returns on the sequels) and watched the TV series, so I knew that the movie would have to be slightly different for me to be completely entertained and it succeeded admirably.  Plus, I have a schoolgirl-like crush on Zooey Deschanel.  *sigh*

I saw Six Days, Seven Nights on a plane... or was it Five Days and Eight Nights.... No, it was 11 Days and a Fortnight.

The one with Ford and Anne He-she.

That one was horrible. Very very dumb. Trapped on an island with a lesbian, without another lesbian around for hundreds and hundreds of miles. >:(

Harrison has been getting soft in his old age. I think the last good one he did was Air Force One. Then he started coming out with Hollywood Homicide and all those other dog turds.

Make's me think if Indy 4 will be worth it.

Gah, the first two books are the weak ones, in my opinion. I like it better when the series stops being Airplane! the book and starts actually building the characters and using Adam's talent actually to create something meaningful.

I liked the radio series, the TV show, the books, and the books on tape, but I really, really didn't like the movie. It's not that it wasn't the same as everything else, it's that it wasn't very Adams-y and the people who weren't Adams that worked on it were not at all to my taste.

Maybe that's it.  I didn't expect it to be exactly the same as the books because how the heck do you film that? It just seemed to lose some of the fun that the books had in translation though and to me, it was more of a hollow love story than anything. Hitchiker's Guide wasn't a love story.  I just didn't get the same feeling from the movie as I did from the books, which is what I wanted.  I can't tell you how many times I laugh or underlined phrases in the book.  I couldn't put them down. I can tell you how many times I laughed during the movie: 0.

I don't think a movie can capture a book exactly, but it should be able to capture the mood.  For me, it didn't do it.

I fell in love with Zooey Deschanel in Almost Famous, when she leans into the camera, her enormous turquoise eyes filling the frame, and tells William "Someday, you'll be cool."

The Hitchhiker's Guide movie was about as loyal as it could be while still having a plot, something the novels and radio shows really don't. Plus, DNA did write the screenplay, so it's as relevant as any other version of the Guide. The BBC series was decent. Loved the opening theme. I wish they'd used more of it in the movie.

I challenge anyone to find an adaptation of Hitchhikers that actually follows the book. None of them do, and there's a good reason for it. :^) I liked the Hitchhikers movie. It makes me feel good. There aren't enough movies that do that these days.

That is why I mentioned a few of the versions, they are all divergant.
Yeah, but except the movie, they all had a heavy stamp of Adams on it. The movie, on the other hand, had only his original script, without any further assistance. What's more, given the rather arcane rules of the writer's guild, they could have rewritten every single word he wrote and the writer's credit would still have gone to him.

Seriously, look up the controversy on Fear and Loathing: if it's an adaptation, and you do the same scenes, only the person who originally wrote the adaptation gets credit. And frankly, I don't think much of Adams survived into the movie.

On the subject of Harrisons former concubines, has anybody seen the HBO LIfestories Families in Crisis with Calista Flockhart where she is a bulemic and pukes in jars? Now that is funny. When the mother finds the jars the mother pukes. Good stuff, I gotta add that to my Christmas list.
