So granted this has been discussed here before but my blood boils every time I see him on the screen and the very thought of remaking such a classic, especially with him makes bile rise in the back of my throat.

Discuss.

LOL, according to the all powerful wikipedia, the boys won't need to riff this - the director seems to be doing it on his own:

"Keanu Reeves as Klaatu, an alien messenger. Derrickson felt Reeves could portray a lack of humanity, but he would not be "doing things that are highly unusual or highly quirky. He's not performing an alien like Jeff Bridges in Starman."[3] "

Wow, what a very necessary remake that is in no way indicative of the fact that Hollywood has run out of ideas.  Surely this will be a masterpiece. ::)
Correction: the coat hanger should be upside down.

I actually like Keanu. I don't think he's a great actor, but I think he's a good action star. :^)

His only really good role is Ted Theodore Logan

If that were true, his career would've gone the same way as Alex Winter, his co-star.  No, he's been good in just enough films for him to stay an A-List celebrity: Speed andThe Matrix, obviously, but he was quite good in The Gift as the abusive husband and I've heard he's good in A Scanner Darkly.

I think the fact it's a remake and that Keanu is in the credits gets in the way from people actually examining and getting an opinion from the trailer. Based on what I've seen, this film actually looks interesting. I don't have any idea if the final product will be good or not, but it's caught my eye.

He was good in "A Scanner, Darkly" and from what I remember he was good in "My Own Private Idaho". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xA0U0otWuzE
He has limitations definitely though.

He was VERY good in The Gift.  That completely surprised me.  He was also more than adequate in The Replacements, and Youngblood.  However, he WAS pretty damn wretched in Much Ado About Nothing.

Keanu Reeves really isn't a very bad actor. I hear he's good in A Scanner Darkly.

But back on topic: Why did they have to try and remake one of the greatest sci-fi movies I've ever seen?

The only thing that would be worse is if they remade Alien.

dignan

I don't know, they've managed to sully Alien's reputation now with enough sub-par sequels in recent years that a remake might actually be a refreshing change of pace for that franchise.

I know I might stir some shit, but I'm not against remakes, not even remakes of established classics.

I am against pointless remakes, remakes just for the sake of making money, like most horror remakes these days, but the trailer suggests there's something new and interesting in this revisiting of the story. It might not turn out that way, but the trailer makes me not want to dismiss it right away.

I want to see this remake, but what is a "necessary remake"?  They don't greenlight movies for artistic necessities; they are all supposed to make money.  Unless it's not a studio movie and is independently financed, or is some kind of Public Service movie, I don't understand your point Greg.

I know they're all supposed to make money, and sure, they're trying to make money with this movie, but sometimes there's an effort to make a good movie as well. I'm not saying this movie is a "necessary remake," but it could be a good one and I don't think people should put it down simply because it's a remake.

Oh yeah, it could be good.  Keanu is the perfect actor to play that role too.
