In the middle of Goodbye Lenin! Don't tell me how it ends.  When the movie started I immediately exclaimed, "Hey! It's the guy from Inglorious Basterds!" but it should be the other way around, shouldn't it? |

Someone on here pointed out that Bubastis has no point now that the genetic subplot is out; that annoys me, because that's all I think when I see her.
It's been a while since I've read the comic, but I don't think Bubastis had a point there, either. He was just there because Ozymodias was eccentric. Even though he was a product of genetic experiments, they were'nt directly related to the work on the squid, were they? In the movie it just shows that Ozy is weird and eccentric, and maybe Dr. Manhattan made him. The only part of Bubastis' inclusion that irritates me is that he was expensive, and that money could have been better used. Like getting better old age makeup. I still think Bubastis is a deliberate illustration of how much of a psycho Veidt is/has become. I posted in a thread a few months ago - murders without remorse, but the only time he expresses regret is when he's toasting his magic cat? Psyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyycho. -dale I think the biggest problem is that you want to know what kind of rules the movie's universe goes by. Reading the book, you find out that it's genetic splicing. But omitting any explanation, well, isn't that just bad sci-fi writing? Like when the Great Gazoo shows up on The Flintstones, you're like "Oh, I guess The Flintstones universe includes alien contact." Which is explanation enough (albeit a terrible idea). The "Watchmen" book justifies the insanity of such a crazy creature. The movie doesn't, thereby leaving a horrendous open end. It should've just been a straight-up tiger or something if that was Bubastis' sole purpose. For the movie's sake, maybe "Watchmen" DOES have alien contact. It's just that open-ended. Watched Whale Rider last night. This movie is both simple and beautiful. I first saw this knowing absolutely nothing about it. I went in 100% blind (so to speak). I was so pleasantly surprised. Knowing the plot (and def the dvd cover art) would've kept me away. Last Christmas, I got to experience a bunch of Polynesian cultures, most notably the Maori, the indigenous tribespeople of New Zealand for whom, I presume, the movie is made by and for. I can appreciate the movie on a whole new level and it still remains just as remarkable as the first time I saw it. It's a small little film that could be forgotten but I'm certainly glad it isn't. Wonderful, contemplative and noteworthy. Can anyone recommend other New Zealand / Maori movies (LOTR and Flight of the Conchords don't count btw)? I'm sure BathTub knows a few, right? |

That's a good one, too. I don't know if you've seen the DVD release, but the documentary is about as long as the movie. It's pretty great. I've heard really good things about Heavenly Creaturestoo, but I haven't seen it yet. |

That's a good one, too. I don't know if you've seen the DVD release, but the documentary is about as long as the movie. It's pretty great. I've heard really good things about Heavenly Creaturestoo, but I haven't seen it yet. Heavenly Creatures is definitely a very good movie. I was surprised to find shadows of LOTR in it, kind of like a premonition of things to come. The story is quite strong and I think is supposed to be true. If you can track a copy down, I def suggest giving it a rental. Does "The Frighteners" take place in NZ? I thought it was America. Thanks for the suggestion of "Once Were Soldiers", Tripe. Checked out the trailer. Def what I'm looking for: One of NZ's best and Maori-centric. I'm looking forward to that one... as soon as I find it. |

I just went to see Amelia last night... and even for a biopic of the first woman to fly across the atalantic... this movie was terrible. They only highlight the boring and inane parts of her life. I gotta say it probably would have been better if this wasn't strictly a biopic and they added some fictional side-stories to it. The writers just did nothing to keep my attention at all, and I barely cared about Amelia or anyone else in the movie at all.

Cool Oh and a search for "Maori Movies" returns Utu and Ngati but I've not seen either of them., Bathtub? Oh and I just watched Gaslight; wow even when she's hyperventilating about her fragile mental state, Bergman has just the most phenomenal figure and prettiest face. Oh and Patrick Hamilton writes good and stuff. |
