I have bit of a tough question.

As you may or may not know a couple of months ago my Vista laptop cashed and wiped out my hard drive,my computer's hard drive is blank.  Well any way I have sold a few things and now i have some money so i am thinking of getting a copy of Windows XP(I don't want to get stuck with Vista and I want to see a few years feedback on 7 before i try that)any way on to my question.

With my computer being blank what is the best version of XP to get.  I noticed some say upgrade on the box, does that mean you have to have a working copy of windows on your computer already to use it?  What does the 32 64 bit stuff mean.  Do i have to pay for the service pack or can they be downloaded?

Sorry for all the questions but i have never gotten an OS apart from a computer before.  Thanks.

To use an upgrade you'll need either an older operating system already install or the install disk for 98 or ME, it will ask you to put the install disk in to verify.

64bit OS will let you access more than 4GB of ram, and run 64bit applications.

The service packs can be downloaded.

Ok so as long as I get a version that isn't an upgrade I'll be fine.  Thanks.

One last thing.

When it say it's for system builders like the following listing does that mean anything?

http://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Windows-Home-System-Builders/dp/B000GWKNH2/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&s=software&qid=1257566714&sr=1-9

Just to give an update on my video card woes, Marty was kind enough to donate a replacement card for the price of postage. It's basically the same specs as my old card, but since it's a Geforce, it's a step up from my Radeon as far as I'm concerned.

High five!

The "system builder" part just means you don't get support from Microsoft (can't call them up if you have a problem), it's for people that build PCs and sell them, the "builder" becomes the support person.

Keep in mind that some things won't work with XP 64. It wasn't a very popular operating system so few people actually own it. Drivers are particularly hard to come by at times (wireless network cards especially). If you use iTunes, you'll probably have trouble as I don't think it's supported. Also, there's no SP3, and it's likely there never will be. Those are just a few things I noticed. Otherwise it works great. I'm running it because my 32 bit key "ran out of activations." Bastard Microsoft.

Yeah, that's what I've got on all my computers; XP Pro 32 bit versions with 2-3 gigs of DDR2 RAM and Core2 Duo & Quad Core processors and they're all functioning Great..

I agree with Mojo.. Just go with 32 bit XP Pro and you'll be fine there Doc Cool

Yeah I reinstalled the 32 bit because many of the programs simply didn't work with 64 bit installed.

What's the point of creating an OS if it doesn't work as well as the OS for half the bits?

Well no, this one came with the computer, luckily I had the install discs for the 32 bit lying around.

Well, you still payed for the new version theoretically..
Would there have been a price difference if you requested the 32 bit version instead? Or did you even ask that before buying?
