Am I the only one excited about this documentary? The reviews are through the roof (high 90's at Rotten Tomatoes) and I'm going nuts that it's not playing in Florida.

Anyone getting a chance to catch it soon?

I read in a games magazine recently that some of the people in the movie have complained that they've been misrepresented by the movie, though I suppose it could be a case that the people didn't like how they saw themselves.

When I saw this on IMDb, my only thought was "stop remaking King Kong, idiots, and take Peter Jackson's camera away from him!" Then I actually looked at the description and realized it was a movie about video games or something like that... Grin

I just saw it today.  It was really well done.  Just about everyone in the movie takes video games way too seriously, which makes it hilarious.  But half way through you really start to care about this guy's goal to beat the world record in Donkey Kong, because the current high score holder is such... well, I hate to use the word, but he's just such a deuche.  Go see it if you can.  Even if you hate video games, you'll just find it all the more amusing.

EDIT:  Thanks for making this topic Chris.  Wouldn't have given this move a second thought while skimming through show times if it wasn't for this thread.  This board is starting to become my main source of info on upcoming films that I should see.  (Though this board did get me overly curious about Transformers, to the point where I had to see it.  So you're still on notice, board.)

...

Yeah, this is a great documentary. This whole underground scene of "classic" video gamers is a strange one. There's definitely an insiders club that has existed since the 70s, and it's fun to watch someone new try to break into that world.

I mean, this poor guy had the skills but had to prove himself over and over again to these losers. First they wouldn't accept his video tape, then they claimed his machine was fixed, then he had to play the video game live... finally he just flew out to their local arcade and entered their tournament.

I had no idea that trying to break a record on something so trivial as Donkey Kong would be this dramatic. I went in to the movie expecting something like a nostalgia piece about classic video games... just framed by this story of an obscure Donkey Kong rivalry. But it was a really great story about people. Thank God that Steve Wiebe was such a nice, genuine person... because you really start to cheer for him. Eventually he even wins over a few of the old school guys. I suppose it's kind of a feel good movie~

It's definitely worth the effort to see this movie if it rolls through your town.

Woot! I have used my powers for good!

In other news, I am chomping at the bit to see this film as it has yet to even announce a future showing in Orlando. The only other opportunity I can think of is that I'll be flying to Madison next week and they've teased a possible showing there, but it's likely that it won't be in the theater that soon if they don't even have a possible date yet.

I will likely see this movie for the first time on DVD, which bums the hell out of me.

I'm excited about this too - I'm pretty sure it's going to be in Boston - woo!  I watched the Attack of the Show episode where they interviewed the director, and he did talk about how the guy who holds the record is so entirely selfcentered, he really didn't care how he came across in the film.  Wow.
