I would like to set this thread up as a forum for artists and groups you've discovered that are actual musical talents, not some assembly line produced cookie cutter studio product. The artist I would like to bring to your attention is a Canadian singer/songwriter called Shiloh. She's around Miley Cyrus' age and vastly more talented. She's what you'd call a free spirited girl who knows who she wants to be as a performer. She released her debut album this year called Picture Imperfect. I highly recommend you guys check her out. Here are a few links to some of her videos and songs:

And as a bonus, here's a link to song that's my personal favorite that Shiloh did when she was 13 called All I Want.

This kinda leaves a lot of room for pretty any much musical style. Here are a couple lesser known commodities in very different genres I am a huge fan of.

Floater (http://www.floater.com/) - Local Oregon rock/alternative group. They have an enormous fan base up here and have already turned their heads at a larger contract with a major label in order to do the music the way they want. They have a distinct sound and all their albums are quite different from each other. Plus, they put on one heck of a live show. Very talented musicians who have fans that are more dedicated than a lot of mainstream artists out there!

Julie Fowlis http://www.juliefowlis.com. Traditional Scottish gaelic folk singer who is considered one of the best scots-gaelic singers out there (next to karen matheson). Its a little-known language that is overshadowed by its irish language counterpart. She is quite good at the whistle and bagpipes also.

Another artist I always recommend... who has had some popularity, but never really reached the mainstream audience that much is Loreena McKennitt. Her music defies any one music category although her later albums have a more Mediterranean flavor and her earlier works are primarily celtic. Beautiful voice and she tends to have a ridiculous amount of world instruments for each song. I've met very few people who did not fall in love with her stuff. (and no... she is nothing like enya)

I generally set up this thread for any style of music you want to post about. In my mind good music defies being labeled. In my eyes it's either good music or bad music.

Last Christmas my sister gave me a CD by Gogol Bordello.  Great band, a nice fusion of gypsy and punk.

Also, this isn't a musician but as a musical find, here's a great out of print CD:

Powerpuff Girls: Heroes and Villains.  Basically the shows creator got a bunch of his favourite bands to make an album based story that has a song for each character and plot point.  It also helped me find great bands I hadn't heard before:

Apples in Stereo
Bis
Optiganally Yours (a band that uses an Optigan).
Dressy Bessy
Komeda
Shonen Knife

Also, a friend showed me a cool music video directed by Eric (of Tim and Eric Awesome Show Great Job)

The band is The Bird and The Bee.

Strange, beautiful, fun and cool.

And now for the master...

I use to always think Wooten was the master too but if you look deep enough there are guys with unbelievable talents who are completely unknown.  Like this guy for example:

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/LcunoeIhPl0&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/v/LcunoeIhPl0&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1</a>

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/1QwgkrG0N4k&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/v/1QwgkrG0N4k&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1</a>

I'm also very impressed with this guy who can sing at the same time:

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/bXImi2etl7I&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/v/bXImi2etl7I&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1</a>

Sorry, I can't really search for links whilst at college but I'll try and remember to get on here when I get home. If you are actually interested, they played rather epic melodic death metal. Probably the most underrated band I know of.

Robert Pattinson, he sounds like a mix between Damien Rice and Bon Iver.

....yes, that Robert Pattinson.

You're completely right. I should have referred to Wooten as a master, not the master.

Wow! Unbelievable playing. Thanks for the ripping links!
