I'm surprised that so many people here are saying they liked Superman Returns.  I liked it too, but I seem to remember back when it first came out, most of the people on this forum were talking about how god-awful they thought it was

Really?! people on here complained overly about a new movie ?  Wink

Yeah, but a few months after the movie had opened, I believe.

Yes.  I know those two things as well.  We are kindred spirits.  That's a weird word.  "Kindred".

I'm surprised that so many people here are saying they liked Superman Returns.  I liked it too, but I seem to remember back when it first came out, most of the people on this forum were talking about how god-awful they thought it was, and I could be very mistaken, but I seem to remember that opinion coming from some of the people who are now saying they liked it.  Am I wrong?  Or did the people who didn't like it at first watch it again and decide it wasn't as bad as they'd thought it was?

Well, I still hate the crap out of that one. I'm one of the two who voted it worst. Overall, of course 4 is the worst, but if you compare 4's budget and other handicaps to the years they had to come up with a story for Returns, it's budget, and it's effects technology, I'd say Returns was the bigger screw up of a movie.

The only thing I liked about Superman Returns was Kevin Spacey, but even that is odd casting if you assume he's supposed to be the same character that Gene Hackman played. Why would they go to so much trouble to cast a guy that looks like Christopher Reeve and not do the same thing for the primary villain? He doesn't even act like Gene's Lex, so why not just bring in a new villain? That's one of the things I hate about the movie. It can't decide if it's a sequel or a reboot. It tries to act like a sequel some of the time, but other times it just says, "Nah, let's do something that contradicts the original films." I could go on, but check out this guy's article. He explains everything wrong with this much better than I could. Plus I actually liked the alternate opening he came up with: http://poobala.com/supermanreturnsstinks.html

Brainiac Attacks was bad too. You can blame part of that on Superman Returns because they basically rushed this thing through production so it could be released on DVD the same time that Superman Returns came out in theaters. They were in such a hurry that they recycled the character designs from Superman: The Animated Series even though it's supposed to be an original story. So if you're a fan of the series, you probably won't be happy about what they've done to Lex, Braniac, and Lois. Doomsday was better in that respect, but the movie's running time is so short it's hard to take Superman's death too seriously in this adaptation. In the comics he was gone for a while and they had a lot of time to play around with that idea. Plus the killing of one character seemed very out of place, like they only added it to help give the film a PG-13 rating. The documentary in the bonus features about the original comics was better than the main feature. I really liked The Batman Superman Movie, but I'm not sure if you can count it since it's really just three episodes of Superman: The Animated Series edited together.

Well, actually, when that first premiered on TV, it was played as one long feature. So I'd say you could definitely count it. Also because it's AWESOME.

I agree.  Lex is the only Superman villain that most people can name.  I would like to see a movie with Darkseid or Brainiac.

A Final Crisis would be a geekgasm of epic proportions.

I went with 4 cos it was evident the Superman flicks had runs their course by the time they got to this one. I must say though, Returns isn't that high up on my list, I mean, it would have been nice to see him throw a punch or two.

I've never posted about it before, as far as I know.

No, a "weak-sauce" version is the Powers Boothe Luthor in Brainiac Attacks. Unlike that version, Doomsday is intended to be entirely different from the Superman animated series, and James Marsters's Luthor is teriffic.

I didn't even know about the Braniac Attacks film. I'll have to look it up. But I stand firm on hating any non-Clancy Luthor.

Be warned. Brainiac Attacks uses all of Bruce Timm's designs for the show, and then has the characters act and sound completely different.

Although I can see the logic behind Guitar Hero be being better than Rock Band, there was no logical discussion of the merits of the song "Jesse's Girl" Unless the mere fact that Jessie's Girl was featured in the comic makes it awesome....I have much to think about....
