Title: A RiffTrax On Demand Short!
Post by: torgosPizza on December 14, 2007, 04:30:20 PM
Enjoy a little video on demand snack, courtesy of RiffTrax and the fine people who made Signal 30, a classic in the scaring-teens-into-never-leaving-the-house-let-alone-getting-behind-the-wheel-of-an-automobile genre. Made by stern law enforcement officials who had, apparently, never met a teenager, Signal 30 offers a grim, relentless death-soaked view of a world gone mad. Thanks, adults!

The first three minutes of this little dainty are on us - our way of saying thanks to all our RiffTrax friends.

Sweet! Shorts via Video on Demand make perfect sense.

Oh, and I know the first 3 minutes are free, but is it available to get fully now?

And then suddenly, without warning, the Video on Demand service becomes worthwhile.

Would the guys really Riff the whole thing?? Yeah it is really cheesy but the people are in fact dead and shown on the screen.  I am a jaded SOB and I would watch it but people in the past have had problems with language used in a Rifftrax.

If Riffs over burned and splattered bodies is OK then give us some Boobies and Riff SHOWGIRLS!!! Or WILD THINGS!

More of an Intro-to-video-on-demand than a preview of a future full length.  But the on demand does open up lots of doors for the future...

Very nice.    Just when I think that I will never use the Rifftrax on demand service cuz I already have the legand DVDs.......

Shorts and other public domain things would be PERFECT for this.

I think I was part of the last generation to see these kind of movies in Driver's Ed. I don't remember this one in particular, at least yet.

The two things I do remember from these films are; One scene where a lady teacher was ejected from her car, through the windshield, and had a nice trail of blood from where she hit the ground all the way up to where she was dead on the ground several feet away and the fact that some girl in our class was scared so bad by these movies, she refused to get behind the wheel and failed Drivers Ed.

Mechanized Death is a classic driver's ed shocker as well as Wheels of Agony. There is a great documentary called Hell's Highway that is all about these flicks and the people that made them.

I haven't tried it yet but there appears to be a disc burning tool right on the side of the player. Apparently you need a DivX ready DVD player to play the disc that you burn.

All that does is burn a data file to DVD. It is not DVD -Video or anything. You then have to have a DIVX device and you have to register it with DIVX in order to play it.  I wonder how many devices you can register?  I have two.

I checked on the Divx website and my Samsung DVD-HD860 is a registered Divx playback device.   I looked on their website and I dont see any "register your device" and since my DVD player is not connected to the internet, I dont think you really have to register your devices, do you?

Dont you just make a "burn" and then play it on your DVD player?

Yes there is a difference between DivX Certified and "registered."

It's actually pretty easy, you do it right from the software player. No need to have an Internet-enabled device.

It should be easy, however my infamous "8 digit divx code" is not in the DVD player set up menu like they stated, so I sent an e-mail to their tech support team.   I am not holding out much hope!   Stupid Samsun DVD-HD860!

Oh well, watching from my laptop only is not the end of the world.

Did you try with the Beta player? Last time someone had an issue with this (we got an email at tech support), they isntalled the player from Labs.Divx.com, and then redownloaded the file, and it worked for them.

Oh well, watching from my laptop only is not the end of the world.

Well, I don't know what RiffTrax's stance is on re-authoring DivX files to put it on a DVD for personal viewing, but they certainly don't seem to have a problem with us re-authoring copyrighted DVDs for personal use (to include the RiffTrax audio), given the various threads on just that subject... so, I'll go ahead and say this and if the mods do not feel it is appropriate, they can delete my post.

There are any number of software programs available for less than $25 (many of which have free trials) that will allow you to rip DivX files to a DVD... the thought, as always, being that once you have bought and paid for a file on your computer, it belongs to you and you can do what you like with it, so long as you are not breaking the law by giving it to other people or showing it for personal gain. Just search google for DivX rippers or DVD rippers (some programs do both).

I haven't read it in some time, but as far as I remember the U.S. DMCA (Digital Millenium Copyright Act) specifically allows creating a copy of something you own, for personal use. This covers such things as copying a DVD, taping / recording shows off of TV, moving / copying mp3s from one place to another, etc. In fact, many companies that use DRM are actually in violation of the DMCA by preventing you from making legal copies of their media that you are entitled to. The RIAA and MPAA would like people to believe that it is against the law to even copy an mp3 or video file from your iPod to your computer's hard drive, but as is often the case with big companies and organizations, what they tell you is not the real story.

As always when the law is in question in matters such as this, I would recommend that you check out the DMCA for yourself if you are concerned about the legalities of the issue. Canada does not actually have an equivalent to the DMCA, but our general copyright laws also specifically allow making personal use copies of media in various (unspecified) formats.

Hmm... why do so many of my posts turn into diatribes against the unlawful practices of big companies in the digital age? Must be subconscious or something...

They're out there. Mine works.

*shrug*

To "rip" means to take from the original source and port it to a new source, regardless of "copy protection." While it is true that some programs claim to be rippers when they are, in fact, only encoders or converters, actual "DivX Rippers" do exist.

That was really funny and very reminiscent of the shorts on MST3k (something I found was the easiest way to get people to watch the show). I'd love to see more!

That being said, the Divx program is a little on the buggy and cumbersome side. I fully respect the need for some copyright protection (even for something free!), but that's a lot of hoops to jump through - and I can't even burn it to a normal DVD.

None the less, Rifftrax is pretty creative and innovative, so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt for now. Thanks again!

Stupid goddamn online "support" help desk staffed in India

Since my Samsung DVD-HD860 dvd player is listed on the Divx site as being certified, they said to go to the setup menu and find the 8 digit certification code.   I go do do that, run down EVERY SINGLE menu option on the DVD player and see it no where.

So, I send a support desk ticket to both Samsung and Divx asking the same thing "where do I find the Divx activation code?"  Seems simple enough.

Samsung blew me off.

Divx DID respond, but all they sent me was a link to an AVI on how to add the code online and said I should power on the DVD player to find the code.   Well no shit idiot.   But WHERE is the god damned code?

Looks like the Divx revolution will leave me behind.   :'(

That's the thing, it's different for every device. They say it's either in a DVD setup menu of some kind or in a manual. I thought I remember reading that it could be found on the back where the mfg information is, but I'm not so sure now.

On my Toshiba SD-499OSU (I think is what it is .. $80 DVD player from Best Buy), I have to go to the Setup menu (there is a button on the remote called "Setup") and scroll to the last option, which is called "Default." From there I select the menu item "DivX registration" and when I do, it gives me the registration code along with the URL of the VOD support page.

Of course this does vary from machine to machine, so if it's not actually anywhere in your menu, there's a good possibility your device is not really DivX certified. I have a friend who works for them and she says that they have found some companies will throw the DivX logo on there just to sell machines, even though it's not really certified. Unfortunate situation, I know, but there isn't a whole lot we can do about it except to direct you to their list of certified devices.

Someday, companies will learn that DRM just pushes people to piracy. Forcing your paying customers to jump through hoops doesn't make them loyal, it makes them hate you.

I gotta agree, the whole DRM thing just frustrates the hell out of people who want to try and do the right thing. I just won't bother with it. Nothing against Rifftrax for choosing DivX as a method for delivery, but it just doesn't sound very convenient to me from the anecdotal evidence presented here.

Unfortunate situation, I know, but there isn't a whole lot we can do about it except to direct you to their list of certified devices.

Wait, their is a challenge flag on the play.    The refreres are now looking at the replay monitor to see if I am stuck using my PC for playback or buying a new DVD player just for Divx playback.     I received another e-mail today from another person on the divx help desk that details out to me the "hidden" buttons to hit to get the divx code for my player.    Why, if this works   :highfive:

Hell, even if it does not, watching it on my laptop is not the end of the world.

For model(s) DVD-HD860

Press the "MENU" button on the remote
Press the "DOWN ARROW" three times to highlight Setup
Press the "RIGHT ARROW" once
Press the "DOWN ARROW" four times to highlight DivX Registration
Press the "ENTER" button on the remote
DivX VOD Registration code now displays

I've never had a problem with it, but then, I do all my viewing on my computer.  I've even got my VCR hooked up to it.

OK, what the hell, I had my Oppo 970 registered, played the activation vid and the sample fine.  Now for some reason they won't play and my player's setup screen shows a different activation code than before.

Hmm... can you still watch the sample?

What happens when you try to play the other ones?

Try entering the "new" registration code into your player and re-burning. I've never heard of that happening but, this is still new to us too. I'm sure you'll get it figured out.

Someday, companies will learn that DRM just pushes people to piracy. Forcing your paying customers to jump through hoops doesn't make them loyal, it makes them hate you.

Right.  Your opinion on the service you're not using is understood.

...  because it's inconveivable that someone could have tried the identical service (from DivX) and been disappointed by it, or tried an extremely similar service from an alternate provider and come to the same conclusion. Someone who has not used the exact service in question is not qualified to have an opinion on its underlying features / composition?

Please do not misinterpret my comment about DRM to be a comment against RiffTrax as well. I'm actually very strongly in favor of on demand content, and I also understand that (short of doing it yourself, which can be prohibitively expensive to get started) your choices are limited in terms of providers right now. All I am saying is that, in and of itself, DRM has a measurable detrimental effect on sales and customer satisfaction. This is backed up by numerous studies and statistics (not to mention countless thousands of vocal online personalities).

I think this might fall under the "try it, you'll like it" category. Sure there might be a couple hoops to go through, but barring any unforeseen issues with a device not being certified or, in PSL's case, not being able to find the DivX Activation ID amid a myriad of configuration options, it's really quite easy.

There was another similar product that had some very early issues going in - people found that to get the final product, the process was "too cumbersome" and "clunky" or "too much work". Some thought that because of this "put the work on the consumer" mentality, the project would never get off the ground. Requiring even a minimal amount of effort to get the thing going was a huge task and even, some people said, a burden; afterward, though, they found that each subsequent attempt was that much easier going forward.

It was called "RiffTrax".

Nicely said.

And yes, they're not exactly the same.  Like I said, we understand your points.  We understand them because they've been made.  In the future, it may be more efficient to just post a link:

But WHERE is the god damned code?

*Allow me to quote myself*

"Upon further review, the play on the field stands as called, PSLOwner's shitty DVD player is not Divx Certified.    PSLOwner is charged a time out and he better hit the booze".

I think the Divx website is messed up and my DVD player is not Divx certified after all.   There is a point in the set up where it says to:

"Press the "DOWN ARROW" four times to highlight DivX Registration
Press the "ENTER" button on the remote"

Naturally, there are only three items on my machine to display, so arrowing down four times takes me to the top.   So, I am out of luck.

I purchased a Panosonic plasma set for the bedroom a couple months ago and it came with a free home theater system, alas, that does not play divx either.

S*I*G*H*.

So, I guess I need to decide if I want to buy ANOTHER DVD player just to play Divx DVDs since I dont want to get a HD or Blue Ray player until they make up their mind.

*Stamps feet, crosses arms petulantly, and looks sullenly at his PC*

My Signal 30 video won't play anymore. It's giving me some sort of error message about the viewing time running out or something...

It looks like it might be on the 48 hour rental. If you go here: http://shop.rifftrax.com/signal-30-download  (http://shop.rifftrax.com/signal-30-download)you can download the TIX file again which will let you watch it. It doesn't redownload the full file or anything and the TIX file is like 1kb.

But the .tix file is assigned to your user; it doesn't re-generate a new .tix file. At least, it shouldn't.

If you want to watch it again I can re-authorize your download. I think it's set to "unlimited" days but like, 3 or 5 watches.

When you click the "get video" on the error it sends you right to the home page. I went to the Signal 30 download page and downloaded the TIX file and played it fine.
