Title: Worst comedies you've ever seen?
Post by: Principal_Skin-trade on June 09, 2007, 11:50:44 PM
Personally... i think the worst comedy I have ever seen was "Cops and Robbersons"... but some others come close, for example, "Adventures of pluto nash" and "Leonard part 6".

2001: Space Travesty. Possibly the worst thing I've seen with Leslie Nielson. And you can't be mad at the movie makers, because they put "travesty" right there in the title.

I'm sure there are worst comedy films, but I avoid watching anything featuring the Wayans brothers, so I wouldn't know.

I really hated "Wedding Crashers".    I did not find one honest to goodness laugh in the whole thing.   I kept watching wondering how it could get worse, then Wil Ferral appeared on teh screen.    I died a little bit then.

Anything with Tom Green?
Anything with Carrot Top?
Anything with Dana Carvey by himself?
Anything produced by SNL or starring former SNL cast members from the last 10 years?

Baby Genuises.  Me and my friend would often joke about the existance of this movie, but actually seeing it is a nightmarish experience.  It will make you, at least for a time, hate babys.

Also Slackers (the one with the dude from Rushmore in it) is a movie that made me physically angry.  I really sympathized with one Crow T Robot when he said "I want to hurt this movie, but I can't hurt it the way it hurt me."

Thank YOU! My friend absolutely loves this movie and talks about how hilarious it is, yet I just find it to be a painful 2 hours. I admit I did laugh at it and do laugh at different parts each time I watch it (I think I only sat through it twice, but I've seen bits and pieces). I just think it's totally overrated. Not a fan.
Also, I really hated "The 40 Year Old Virgin". I made the mistake of watching the extended cut and couldn't wait for it to end. So stupid.
Also, "Napoleon Dynamite". My friend and rented that on a coin flip...and ever since then we've hated that frigging quarter. We'll never make a choice that way again!

Oh, good, I'm not the only one that loathed that movie.  My entire school was caught up in the Napoleon Dynamite craze, wearing "Vote for Pedro" t-shirts and quoting the movie at any chance they got.  I felt like I had missed something important, but I couldn't watch a movie where all the actors on the screen looked braindead nine times out of ten.

This might sound a touch weird, but I can't watch 'Holy Grail' anymore.  It just got to the point where I had been exposed to it for so long, the jokes got old.  Meanwhile, if I mention that I'm a fan of Monty Python, the next thing out of everybod's mouth is, "Oh!  I know that one!  We are the knights who say Ni!"  It's a little bit grating, to tell the truth.

OK I might be alone here but I've never found Caddyshack especially amusing.

It has this sort of mega popular cult status (oxymoronic I know) but I find it terribly flat and unamusing. And I like everyone involved with it when they are in other films.

In the same spirit as Napoleon Dynamite, I also meant to include Nacho Libre as one of the worst comedies I have ever seen. Jack Black is not funny, he doesn't do or say anything in the movie that has not been seen ten million times before in movies starring the Marx bros or the Three stooges.  Speaking of... does anybody honestly think Jack Black is really that funny?

I actually like Adam Sandler movies.  Billy Madison, Happy Gilmore and The Waterboy are all favs of mine.  I know that some people don't care for them, but I've always gotten a chuckle from them.

Dane Cook, I don't get his popularity.  I gave his HBO special a shot since he seems to be the hot young comic, but I can't say I laughed once.  Give me Jim Gaffigan any day over Dane Cook.  (hot pockets!)

As far as unfunny movies go, the worst comedy I've seen in recent years is My Super Ex Girlfriend.  Which is really sad since it wastes some funny comic talents.

I used to think that The King Of Comedy was a bad comedy, but after seeing it again years later as an adult, I enjoyed it much much more.

Senseless (with Marlon Wayans and David Spade) is the only comedy I've ever walked out of at the movies.  I don't know what made me go see that in the theaters, but then again I also saw Bio-Dome in the theaters.   :gouge:

Dracula Dead And Loving It by Mel Brooks was also painful to watch.    I'm sure I could think of more eventually.

I actually don't see the King of Comedy as a comedy, but rather as a dark satire.  It doesn't make me laugh, but at times it does make me smile a wicked smile.  I feel that it is one of Martin Scorsese's more underrated films (though I must admit, I've only seen a few of his works) and one of DeNiro's more underrated performances.

Here's an odd one: "I'm Not Rappaport."
I saw it in the video store some years back under the "comedy" heading, but it was in fact the most depressing film I've ever seen. It was pretty well done as a movie, but it was not a comedy. It was an anti-comedy.

Yeah, I'm not very happy when movies and books are mislabeled in terms of genre.  The Dead Zone is not a horror book.  It's a drama and a thriller but not horror.

I actually liked "Dude, Where's my Car?"... it's not a great movie by any means, but when you go out of your way to make a stupid comedy and then get ridiculed for being, well, stupid... I think alot of people missed the point. Granted, it's almost too aware of it's own stupidity at times... but for the most part, I enjoyed it for what it was.... and I think Kelso and Stifler have a knack for playing, well, Kelso and Stifler.

As far as Napoleon Dynamite.... I think it's a great movie, if a bit overrated. It's definitely not a laugh out loud type of comedy... but it has a certain sneaky charm that takes a few viewings to appreciate. I wasn't all that impressed by it on my first viewing, but I think it was just a victim of it's own hype. If you go into after hearing "OMG! This is sooo funny" from everyone, it's bound to underwhelm.

My least favorite comedy... Saving Silverman. The only legit lauhgs in the entire thing were shown in the two minute trailer. It also features Jack Black, who seems to not be very well liked around here. I don't think he's the reason why this movie sucks... but Black (along with an embarrassed Steve Zahn) turns in one of the worst pratfalling routines in modern cinema. Don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with a good old fashioned pratfall routine... this just isn't it. Strikingly unfunny movie.

I have a feeling that some people might disagree with me here, but Car Wash is easily the worst "comedy" I've ever seen.

I (or, more accurately, my family) rented this movie shortly after watching Silver Streak, under the false assumption that, since Richard Pryor was in it, it had to be funny.  To our great horror, we found out as the movie unfolded that, not only was Richard Pryor barely in it at all, it WASN'T FUNNY IN THE SLIGHTEST.  (And the attempts at social commentary didn't work too well, either.  After I watched it, I felt bad for Pryor and, to an even greater extent, George Carlin (who is used in a weak attempt at a running gag that gets even weaker with each repetition).

How did this movie suck?  Let me count the ways:

1.  The two most talented comedians on the planet receive barely any screen time.  This isn't my main beef with the film by any means, and I'm not sure if it would've helped to see more of them, but the fact that they're on-screen for a combined total of about six of this movie's 97 excruciating minutes certainly doesn't help.

2.  Four words: written by Joel Schumacher.  Schumacher's other screenwriting credits include such ripened turds as D.C. Cab and The Wiz (although I've been told that there are some people who actually like the latter).  And, lest we forget, this is the same Joel Schumacher who directed The Incredible Shrinking Woman and Batman and Robin.  It's pretty clear that Schumacher's sense of "humor" is about as sharp as a worn-out plastic spork.  He uses his utter lack of talent to devastating effect here, churning out a pointless, unfunny, meandering script, complete with a weak attempt to tie it all together at the end.

3.  Speaking of repeat offenders, let's take a look at the director, Michael Schultz, whose other "achievements" include Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band and The Jerk, Too.  Of course, I don't blame him too much for this movie's many problems - as an African-American, he does offer at least some semblance of a black perspective to this movie.  However, the lightweight, rudimentary Schumacher script absolutely screamed for a whole buttload of improvisation.  Given the canned nature of most of the dialogue, he either allowed too much of it or not enough.  Although I was ale to detect a few indicators that suggested a small degree of improvisation was present, I'd still bet on the latter, since the majority of the "jokes" directly relate to the underlying social messages.  The end result is an utter loss of a real African-American perspective, causing the movie to reveal itself for what it truly is: a movie about black people written by a no-talent honky.

4.

5.  The Car Wash three-step formula for total hilarity:
Step 1:  Point out a weighty social issue that somehow relates to black people and/or the working class in the most obvious way possible.
Step 2:  Have the characters talk about it in a straight-faced, academic way.
Step 3:  Follow up with an obvious punchline that any moron can see coming from a mile away.

Just in case you think I'm exaggerating, here's the quintessential example, a supposedly heated exchange between a black Muslim and a transvestite:
Quote[Duane has just thrown Irwin's book into a bucket of water]
Lindy: I'm so tired of you running off at your mouth it's getting me down honey. Why don't you just leave? And be an assassin? Or is the only thing you're good at shooting off is your big mouth?
Duane: Will you please get out of my face you sorry looking faggot.
Lindy: Who you calling sorry looking?
[Everybody laughs]
Duane: Can't ya'll see she aint funny?
[Laughter stops]
Duane: She's just another poor example of how the system is destroying our men.
Lindy: Honey, I'm more man than you'll ever be and more woman than you'll ever get.

(Note: The emphasis is mine.  Duh.)
Oh, yeah!  Way to respond to a vague, awkwardly-crafted revelation of hidden bigotry with a stereotypical sassy comeback!  You go, um...girl!

Honestly, I don't even think this is even provocative by 1976 standards, especially when you consider the fact that Rocky Horror came out in 1975.  Even if it were, it's decidedly dated now, which is most certainly not the case for the innumerable other, better comedies of the period.

Schumacher and Schultz elect to take the same "bland, inoffensive sitcom" approach to humor and storytelling for literally the entire movie, as if they were afraid the message would float over the audience's heads if it weren't repeatedly drilled into them.  They even tie the film together with a schmaltzy, reconciliatory scene at the end, a la "A Very Special Blossom" (or perhaps "G.I. Joe").

And oh, how deep and endearing these messages are!  For example, did you know that a small but sizable number Muslims (including black ones) exhibit radical, and sometimes violent behavior?  And have you considered that a full-out race war initiated with the intent to install blacks as the master race while whites serve as their de facto slaves might be a little misguided?  And this is but a mere fraction of the insight that this movie provides!  Hilariously, it appears that interactions between white people and black people are often awkward and uncomfortable, the kind of car a person drives is a good indicator of his class status (but not his character), some Communists are upper-class intellectuals with no real idea of the plight of the working class, and - most shockingly of all - some religious leaders may have strong financial motivations (and this is bad).  Also, when a nerdy kid creates his own superhero, names it "The Fly," and pretends to be this superhero by raising two fingers to the side of his head and saying "Bzzz!" a lot, it is hysterically funny, and not at all stupid or irritating.

This combination of shocking, provocative commentary builds up to provide us with the most obvious and overt message contained in this waste of celluloid:  that Joel Schumacher believes the average moviegoer to have an IQ of about 50.  In a close second is the viewpoint of the undoubtedly white producers and distributors:  "Gee, this movie sure does suck!  No need to worry, though - our target audience consists mainly of black people, and black people are stupid!  Why, all we have to do is insert a funky, upbeat soundtrack and all the happy, nappy negroes will see this movie and sing and dance!  Hurray for dancing Negroes!"

6.  I've just realized that my rabid, overlong, ranting review of this film is funnier than the movie itself.

In conclusion, I blame whitey for this movie, and every stupid movie like it.  In fact, this movie completely justifies the notion that we should "kill whitey."  Indeed, I will gladly volunteer my pasty-ass carcass if it means that movies like Car Wash will no longer be made.

Totally Awesome was pretty horrendous... but it avoids "Worst ever" status due to a pretty hilarious turn from Tracy Morgan. I've never been a big fan of his work from SNL... but he dropped a number of genuinely funny lines in a movie that was otherwise a trainwreck even by "made for basic cable" standards.

"Have you ever broken a Puerto Rican's arm for sweatpants money?"

That's comedy gold right there....

I like Jack Black.  I thought he was a riot in Orange County.

Man, Napoleon Dynamite was a supremely irritating movie.  I equate the experience of watching Napoleon Dynamite to the experience of sitting in a comedy club and watching a comic bomb, to the increasing discomfort of everyone in the audience.

How about dramas that are billed as comedies?  Those irritate me, because I'd probably really like them if I wasn't anticipating a laugh-fest.  You know, like Little Miss Sunshine or Lost In Translation.  They might have funny moments in them, but they're DRAMAS, people.

"Tomcats" with Jerry O'Connell, Shannon Elizabeth and Jake Busey.

I've enjoyed these actors in past roles of theirs, so you'd think that I'd enjoy a movie with all three of them. Well, you'd think wrong. It's horrible & tremendously unfunny. When I watched it, I smirked at 1 scene in 90 minutes. That's not even a full laugh. Just a "okay, that idea is kind of amusing" smirk. Tomcats has "Freddy Got Fingered" levels of badnes. Don't believe me? Take a look at this review from the Austin Chronicle:

"Tomcats is a godawful hell-wreck of a film, utterly meritless, clueless, and sloppy all the way down the line. As far as grossout comedies go, this one takes the proverbial cake, slathers it with a heaping helping of frat-boy misogyny, and then has the cojones to be equal parts stultifyingly dull and wearyingly unfunny. It is a comic nadir, the stanky green crust caking the bottom of the well of titters."

Roper (who I normally ignore, except when he agrees with me) declared this film to be the worst film of 2001.

Actually Brooks' movie is called LIFE Stinks. Love Stinks has French Stewart (the voice of Bob in God, the Devil & Bob) as a guy who's being terrorized by his psycho ex-girlfriend. Can't vouch for the quality of this film on either side, since the last time I saw it, I was NINE, but LIFE Stinks, the one that Mel Brooks WAS involved with, is a funny movie. Anyhoo...yeah, it's just that every time I turn on any Mel Brooks film, I'm always laughing. It's the same with the Pythons, all of their films are funny (Python TV episodes are often hit or miss, but the films are ALWAYS funny).

I think the two worst things that either the Pythons or Brooks were involved with were both kids' movies - Look Who's Talking Too (Brooks as the voice of a toilet...really) and Valient (John Cleese, along with a cast of many famous British actors and comedians...all embarrasing themselves in a horribly unfunny CGI bird movie).

Night Patrol? Isn't that the one where Henry Winkler was desperately trying to translate his sitcom success into a movie career?

No, this is the one with...wait for it..............Linda Blair as the acting lead.  And it is not the actor that plays the Unknown Comic that was in it...it was the charactor, paper bag and all patroling the streets as a cop.

BTW  Caddyshack 2 is horrible, you guys are right about that.

Caddyshack isn't nearly as funny as it's been made out to be, but it's still pretty damn funny. The sequel, though, now that's bad. Mike even mentions it alongside Howard the Duck in terms of quality on his Plan 9 commentary.

You know it might be that; it not living up to the hype destroys it for me. I just find other films with just about everyone in that film waaaay funnier.

Personally, I like Rodney Dangerfield's stand-up better than his movies. Except maybe Easy Money.

I like Back to School but yes he was a better stand up.

Bewitched by far, man it felt the movie was never going to end. one time during watching it i looked over at the clock and saw the movie had only been on for 35 minutes when it felt like hours.    :gouge:

Couldn't be arsed to go see that. I'm with Stewie Griffin on that film.

Actually, the Unknown Comic (aka Murray Langston) goes sans bag in Night Patrol, at least while performing his law enforcement duties.  He dons his famous lunch sack only while moonlighting as a stand-up comic.

I personally enjoy Night Patrol.  It sets out to be juvenile, filthy, and absurd, and I believe it achieves that goal admirably.  Suffice it to say, if you're the sort of discerning viewer who thinks that hearing Billy Barty fart never gets old, you'll probably enjoy this movie.

It's also almost certainly the only film ever to feature Pat Morita dressed in a sari and recounting a harrowing tale of forced masturbation in the voice of a nine year old girl.  That's got to be good for something.

Many things to say...

1) I love "Dracula Dead and Loving it"! It was pretty damned good in my opinion
2) Someone else remembers "God, the Devil, and Bob"? Sweet.
3) I am so frigging tired of Dane Cook. He's not that funny. He has good moments, yes, but he kills them by being so "random" and "weird". His jokes are just rambling...but Jim Gaffigan is freaking hilarious. I love his stuff. Good to see there are more fans of his.

For the longest time, I had Houseguest as the worst movie I'd ever seen.  The movie is just on fast forward the whole time and Sinbad somehow bonds with the entire family when he just comes off as a McDonald's loving Fart-Knocker.  And how about that McDonald's tie-in, just about as obvious as the one for Bye Bye Love.

I know there are worse comedies, but this one just left a bad taste in my mouth.

I think Lady Bugs was easily the worst.

Anything with Sinbad in it automatically grates on me.

And on the topic of great comedy.   I got to show Blazing Saddles to my fiance and her 2 younger brothers last night.  None of them had seen it and I love seeing the reactions of a newbie with that movie.  Awesome.

Mel Brooks is kind of a 'flood or drought.' He has made some of the funniest comedies ever (Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein) and some of the worst (Life Stinks.*no this movie stinks!*) Rarely has he made a middle of the road movie. History of the World Part 1 maybe... It has it's moments and I have always liked it but it didn't age well.

My vote for worst comedy, well at least most overrated comedy is The 40 Year Old Virgin. I like Steve Carrell, I think he's funny. But I just didn't get this movie. I also didn't get Napoleon Dynamite either though. Maybe I'm getting old.

'Robin Hood: Men in Tights' is pretty bad, as well as 'Mr. Magoo'.

I know some will disagree with me, but I'd have to say that Dodgeball had to be one of the worst comedies I've ever seen. I only chuckled once or twice. But the rest of the humor was just so dumb, juvinile, and not funny. Especially when they had to wear goth costumes to their first game which I found more disturbing than funny.

I liked Napolean Dynamite. I didn't laugh as much as my friends said they did ( possibly because I heard all of the jokes a million times before seeing it ), but I still thought it was a good little movie. At least it doesn't go into crude, intelligence insulting humor like Dodgeball had.

I Vehemently Disagree!!!!!

I absolutely love Dodgeball; I find that it is one of those movies I can watch again and again and still laugh my butt off! C'mon, man! Steve the Pirate! White Goodman! Justin! Patches O'Houlihan! Rip Torn! ESPN 8, THE OCHO!!! PEPPER BROOKS!!!!!!!!!!!

Classic!!

I gotta agree with Krankor on Dodgeball. Of course, Kodiak mentioned some funny stuff (mostly "The Ocho!"), but I remember seeing this and being very disappointed...and glad I didn't spend money.
I've got another suggestion though...."The Stupids". Even as a kid I thought it was severely unfunny.

Last time the DFT ran The Producers they showed that before it, Brooks was an excellent comedy writer, not sure he still is though.

Yeah, but if we could go back in time and get young Mel, he'd be a hell of a riffer.  I'd give them the boring Canadian short films that use to pop up all the time on Teletoon.
