Post discussions of season 12 episode 2 here. Title and first post to be edited to allow people to discover the episodes for themselves.
Red is REALLY hard to root for.
Go go Dour Rangers!
I loved all the slo-mo speech gags.
I love that Red describes the scene we had just seen for WAY too long. "Baboom!" Also, he just straight up murders a building that 100% wasn't fully evacuated.

Missed riff IMO was at the end of that scene after he's been telling that story and Blue and Green have been standing there listening, the camera pans back and there's all these bodies around them and they just casually walk away.
Yeah, everyone is pretty indifferent to the body count, even though the film took the time to hire extras to be corpses strewn about the city. Even Mark Millar would know enough to do that shit ironically.
This movie was much more enjoyable to watch than Pacific Rim.
This is basically what happens when you hire one actual actor, the chick you are sleeping with, and some people off the street. The people with talent didn't give a fuck, and the people without any gave too much of one and chewed up the scenery worse than a coked up Shatner.
As a side note, I kept getting confused by, well, everything, but random dead bodies lying in random streets where the monster never got to, and if it did, they didn't look like a giant monster squished or ate them. I kept thinking, 'So, Chuck Norris from Breaker, Breaker found out these people killed his brother and he offed them by punching them to death, because that looks like the COD here.'
Is anyone but me disturbed that's there's too much blackness in the film and that you can't see the silhouettes? At least in the early seasons the old show the silhouettes would be a slightly different shade or color so you can see the silhouettes.

Yeah, this bugged me too. I kept waiting for someone to explain why the streets are littered with dead people, but nope. I'd don't think they even acknowledged they were there, despite standing right next to them.
This and LORDS OF THE DEEP are the only two films featured that I didn't see prior to MST3K, but I never really liked The Asylum anyway. ATLANTIC RIM probably could have worked if they stopped to take a breath every once in a while, and gave us more likeable characters. Red is a douche, and the supposed love triangle they try to force on us is just filler. I didn't even think Tracy and Red were a thing until later, because she's clearly miserable when she's alone with this alcoholic. The film's in too much of a hurry, and the constant music takes its toll. It's like they were worried people would get bored. But non-stop action really can get boring.

That was only at the very beginning, and it looked terrible. Then they realised it was better to tint the movie.

There was also even more of it in the next movie. Fortunately, there was enough contrast in Episode 4.
So was the riff "Uh...line?" on a shot of Graham Greene a reference to the Rifftrax of Twilight?
I feel like "line" predated twilight all the way to MST3K, but I can't think of where it would have been.
Mac and Me is ok, but it has the same problem as most of Season 11, which is that they sound like they are trying way too hard. The original guys, especially Joel, were able to make me believe they were just funny guys seeing the movie for the first time. Jonah and co seem tense and scripted-- scripted by somebody else. The pace of the riffs definitely contributes to this.
Atlantic Rim seems better. Maybe it has a more laid back pace, or maybe they actually are getting more comfortable, but I am really enjoying it. Maybe this movie is just my kind of bad.
Oh, I'm finally able to tell Jonah apart from Servo. Unfortunately it's because I've learned that if a line is said in a weird voice or cadence for no good reason, it's Servo. He always sounds like he doesn't think his lines are funny so he tries to say them in a funny way.

Keep in mind that Hampton has been on one of the tours and Jonah on tour twice, but Baron never has been on any of the MST3K tours. Maybe the lack of practice is why his riffing isn't up to par in your eyes.
Glad you enjoyed the episode! :D
Atlantic Rim is bad, but for me it's a hilariously bad that I could watch on it's own. I feel bad for Graham Greene, he deserves so much better than this. The riffing makes fun of him only having one expression, but clearly the script and production gave him nothing to work with. Plus he has to do most of his scenes next to that AWFUL actor playing the general with the eyepatch.
And as bad as Atlantic Rim is, it's still better than Michael Bay's Transformers movies. I can actually tell what was going on. I didn't care about what was going on, but I could tell what was happening.
I actually really enjoyed Graham Greene, but it's obvious he was playing against type. His lines screamed "tough-as-nails sergeant" but his gentle Native American inflection just wasn't up to it.
The highlight of this episode was the Patrick Swayze Christmas callback. Also I was in the Air Force and had a supervisor that always referred to the phone as "the horn" like the guy in the movie. That made the riffs extra special to me.
My favourite scene in the film is Graham Greene constantly oscillating between browbeating and congratulating Red while he's in prison.

"What part of 'you're the best worst soldier we have' do you not understand?" ;D
I haven't laughed that hard at a new riff in a long while. Kudos!
That movie made Sharknado look like Citizen Kane. EVERYTHING about it was horribly incompetent.
My favorite riff was when the three robot pilots were grimacing over their brain-control-thingies and they cut to the scientist looking pensive and slightly guilty. "Sooo, you guys good?"
I just love that this new season is convincing skeptics like Quirk and eegah. Maybe MST3K is back for good!

Let's hope so. I know this is sacrilege, but I thought season 12 even rivals Riffrax. It really benefits from having all new (or returning) writers.
Totally. New MST3K can stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Rifftrax and everything that came before it. I know not everyone is quite THAT on-board, but I really think they've succeeded in capturing the spirit of MST3K while changing it up enough to keep it fresh.

Was I a skeptic? I found season 11 so-so, but I don't remember being skeptical. Perhaps I made a comment to that effect that I don't remember.
The recent live show was fantastic and gave me reason for optimism. I really hope their riff of "The Brain" is preserved and disseminated in some way.

I apologize if I misrepresented you. I'm just really happy that Season 12 is where the MST3K revival is growing the beard, so to speak, and that many people seem to enjoy it.

I like it, but I'm not that on board. If most everyone involved was doing this as a fulltime gig and we were getting seasons of 24 episodes each made over 24 weeks (or even some guarantee of 2 sets of 6 episodes each released every year), I might be more on board. I'm enjoying it for what it is, but with Rifftrax I feel I can count on regular releases and we're not at that point with MST3K v4 yet.

That's understandable. At least we have fantastic live shows to look forward to!
I loved the riffs, but I have issues with Atlantic Rim. It's from the same company that gave us the Sharknado series. Like Sharknado, it's self aware and intentionally bad. IMHO it would be fine for Rifftrax, but not MST3K.
I know people will say that the show did other movies that are self aware of what it is, like Space Mutiny and Operation: Double 007. But they where not made intentionally bad. The Asylum took Atlantic Rim and it's other films over the top in purposely making them bad. And I would like to add if this movie took human form, It would be so hard for me to not want to punch it in the face.
Speaking of The Asylum, they released 25 movies in the last two years. I sampled a few from each year. It's good to see consistency. :P

While it's still over the top, its played more straight than Sharknado. Their mockbusters are generally cheesy, but somewhat more sincere.

I like his point about inclusivity. I never even noticed it, but that means it's one of the things the movie does well.

Except you're overlooking the fact that 'inclusivity' didn't make the movie good in any way. Aside from Greene, this is as terrible a movie as you could make. And if Greene was hired for his race instead of his acting talent, which even sleepwalking in this was better than the entire cast combined and multiplied ten times, than it's a slap in the face to him. And inclusivity for the sake of inclusivity doesn't make a movie better (as this showed) and potentially can make it worse. If Treach and some Native American actor read for the part of Rushing, and the Native American was better for the part, should he not get it because you already had a Native American on the cast and no African Americans yet? Inclusivity says you go with Treach. Does that make the film better or worse?
And for the record, I didn't notice the inclusivity either, since it's not a criteria for me. Aside from Greene (who is underrated) everyone was equally inept in talent, which is the only thing I care about, and most assuredly noticed :)
And since this is the internet and nuances are nearly impossible to discern, if this came across as offensive, I apologize. I've worked with people where that issue has been an issue when it shouldn't have been.

Did you read the link? No one said inclusivity made the movie good, they just said that it was a positive aspect of the production. And it is.
A pretty decent episode although the timing of the riffs is a bit off at times. I'm not a big fan of Sharknado type stuff so I didn't think this one was going to be great.
I did like the whole "Bro" sketch--Red is a well-deserved target. Good stinger too.
