Quote"Love Guru Leads Razzie Awards
21 January 2009 8:11 AM, PST
Mike Myers' comedy The Love Guru is leading this year's Golden Raspberry Awards after scoring seven nominations at the naming and shaming of the year's worst movies.
Funnyman Myers is nominated in the Worst Actor category, and his castmates Sir Ben Kingsley and Verne Troyer also received Worst Supporting Actor nods for their performances in the comedy, about a spiritual healer.
Other actors up for the Worst Actor dishonour include Mark Wahlberg (The Happening and Max Payne) and Al Pacino, who garnered nods for both 88 Minutes and Righteous Kill.
The Love Guru is also up for the Worst Picture Award, competing with M Night Shyamalan's ecological thriller The Happening, Paris Hilton's farce The Hottie and the Nottie, Disaster Movie, Meet the Spartans and In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale.
The hotel heiress gets three nods for her turn in the comedy picture, as well as another Worst Actress nomination for Repo! The Genetic Opera.
Hilton will compete for that gong against Jessica Alba (The Love Guru and The Eye), the stars of The Women (Annette Bening, Eva Mendes, Debra Messing, Jada Pinkett-Smith and Meg Ryan), What Happened In Vegas' Cameron Diaz and Kate Hudson for both Fool's Gold and My Best Friend.s Girl.
The winners will be announced at a ceremony in Hollywood on 21 February - a day before the Academy Awards take place."
88 Minutes was a bad film?

Yes, yes it was.
Just asking. Never saw it.
BTW, is it possible that the motive of these Mental Zeros who keep making things like
Disaster Movie and
Meet the Spartans has been to sweep the Razzies all along?

I can't remember, do you get anything for winning a razzie (other than a nice dose of humility)?

Also more publicity (which supposedly there is no such thing as bad), people who like bad films check them out on DVD and people who want them riffed on get more ammuntion for their argument.
And if the nominee is a good sport about it you get this:

Which is the biggest tragedy since she's usually really good. Thank God this didn't kill her career.
I think it might keep her from being a box office star, though.
She's better in the little movies anyway.

Eddie Murphy was nominated for 'Worst Actor' and 'Worst Screen Couple'.
I think that the Razzies have the same sort of popularity-contest mentality as the Oscars/etc. There were far worse films than
Meet Dave and
The Love Guru released this year, but I doubt the nominators had even heard of them. I can definitely say, without any hesitation at all, that
An American Carol is far worse than either of these movies, and I've only seen the trailers and a few clips.
As for Uwe Boll being "Germany's answer to Ed Wood": Ed Wood made entertaining bad movies, and actually enjoyed making them. He is far above Uwe Boll in every way possible.

And you'd be wrong.
I've seen all six films nominated as well as An American Carol and all of the nominees deserve to be there. (Well, maybe not The Happening. It's bad, but it seems to be on there because of M Night's name being on it. If Joe Smith had directed it, I doubt that it would have been nominated.) Frankly, even if you removed all six current nominees, Carol still wouldn't be on the list. Hell, off the top of my head, you could nominate Postal, One Missed Call, Max Payne, Prom Night, Witless Protection and Made of Honor. And you still wouldn't be near nominating Carol.
Look, American Carol is in the same ballpark as Superhero Movie: A film with some decent jokes and a lot of scenes where you can see the missed opportunities. But I at least chuckled at some jokes. I didn't even do that in the four "comedies" nominated by the Razzies. It's not a good film by any means, but it's not the humorless bottom of the barrel that was nominated. Hell, it wasn't even as bad as Fool's Gold.
And watching An American Carol was more entertaining than watching either Religulous or Expelled.

You can have any opinion you want, but I found what I've seen from
An American Carol to be on the same level as any of the Friedberg/Seltzer spoofs...and of all of those, the most I've seen of any of them, was about 30 minutes of
Date Movie. And I'd definitely say that what I've seen from
An American Carol is equal to what I've seen of Larry the Cable Guy's stand-up. It can't be better than
Witless Protection.
And I've actually seen more of
Postal than any of these - I can say without hesitation that what I've seen from
An American Carol is equal to
Postal. Again, I haven't watched the movie from start to finish, but I've seen enough of it to know that it deserved to be nominated.
Never heard of An American Carol, am I right in assuming it has something to do with charles dickens?
Structurally yes.
Poor Charlie, he didn't ask for his art to be copied into a crappy film.

Structurally yes.
Unless you count that the Ghost of America Past (or whatever it was called) in the visage of General Patton and played by Kelsey Grammer appears all through the movie instead of just saying his piece and going.
Guess Zucker couldn't let go of the biggest name (???) in the film.
(didn't actually see it - read that in a review. it also says that Zucker and Co. say all through the commentary that they were rewriting constantly and that all the jokes suck)

Yeah, that was one of the issues that I had with the film, breaking too much away from the Dickens model. Part of the problem may have been the casting.
Jon Voight plays George Washington, who's the Ghost of Christmas Present. Frankly, he's great. I'd cheerfully watch 2 hours of Voight playing Washington. And that's a problem with the film. In the commentary track, they mention that they had to cut back Voight's scenes drastically because, well, he had too good of a performance. After his scene, it took the audience too long to get back into the "Oh, yeah. We're watching a comedy" mindset. Frankly, it they had cast Dennis Hopper as Washington, the movie might have had a better comedic flow. But as it stands, the Christmas present stuff goes about 2-3 mintues. Some of it gets rolled into Grammer's part, but they really needed a more sustantial Present to make the Dickens framework work.

Having heard the commentary track, they don't quite say that the jokes all sucked, but they were clearly unhappy with the finished script. As an outside observer, it really needed another draft, but apparently the writer's strike made that a no-go.

I'm sure somewhere in Vegas you can.
Personally, even though the Razzies are rediculous, anything that warns the general public away from Uwe Boll can't be a bad thing.
Plus, now that he has a Worst Career Achievement, he can retire. Right? Right? Sigh.
I will always remember 2008 as the year that I found out what makes Uwe Boll laugh and it seems to be 9/11 and school shooting.
I guess on 9/11 he woke up turned on his tv and laughed his ass off all day.
Actually, for my money, the only part of Postal that was even remotely close to humorous was the beginning, when a couple of the 9/11 hijackers are trying to get clarification on just how many virgins they'll receive in Paradise. I thought it showed up, in as clever a way as Uwe Boll is capable of, the utter ridiculousness of the idea of "rewards in the afterlife."

That SO needs to be on a kitchen magnet.
I simply can't believe The Love Guru won over Disaster Movie. I mean, Disaster Movie is prone to cause fits of dementia and pancreatic cancer. Nothing could be worse.
And don't listen to them Indy, I still love you!
And the disease I would rather have than watch this movie is...spastic colon!
I'm also assuming that nowhere as many people saw Disaster Movie as did The Love Guru.
Maybe, though they both still (thankfully) bombed (even though Disaster Movie still made more than it's budget >_<).
Also, I think it's a low blow giving Indy the Worst Sequel award. Sure, the movie wasn't nearly as great as it should've been, but it's leagues above the one-two combo of Disaster Movie and Meet the Spartans.
And another thing, did they actually watch Repo? Paris Hilton does a good job (I was just as shocked as anyone), that seems to be giving that award to Paris for the sake of awarding it to Paris.
Whole thing is feeling like a desperate attempt to give notice to the big name failures than actually say which was the worst.

I think the issue is one of expectations; NO ONE expects a Friedberg/Seltzer film to be even slightly watchable.

Thirded.
The Love Guru, really? Mike Myers has steered me wrong only once. It was called the Cat in the Hurghhh... sorry, can't finish it. I doubt The Love Guru is that bad. I think some people just want to hate comedians that aren't the funniest person in the world 24/7/365. Like they've somehow been personally betrayed because everyone said Austin Powers was so funny, then it got annoying and the sequels weren't the original, and then the Cat in the HAAAAGHHH!! Sorry, every time. It seems like the only way to make a successful comedy these days is to not even attempt to suggest that it's funny. People seem so fucking slighted when a trailer for a comedy tries to make it seem funny. Jesus Christ.
Which only makes me wonder when did Michael Jackson have a comedy career? Cause people treat him like he's Jim fucking Carrey. And nobody deserves that. Not even Hitler.
And Paris Hilton is ALWAYS a problem, no matter what the topic.
Well at least Bill wasn't nominated for Meet Dave...
Well, it would be sort of weird to rant about them hating The Love Guru if they had chosen something else.
Besides, how is it a DOMINANT opinion? It's just one site.
Bill should have won. At least then he could call himself "Award-Winning Screenwriter Bill Corbett."

I'm not sure I would've given Love Guru worst picture. It's an awful, awful, movie, yes, but it's not as bad as Disaster Movie. And I don't think Uwe Boll's movie should even be on the list - it was merely dull and a marked improvement over his other game adaptations - but I suppose the Razzies have to fulfill expectations just as much as the Oscars.
Heh. I haven't seen The Hottie and the Nottie yet. I will, but there's a nasty bit in the trailer that's putting me off.

Yeah, but wasn't Myers trying to make a legitimate original comedy when he made

Myers probably won because he fell the farthest.
