Joel announced it today! They're doing Santa Claus Conquers the Martians. How cool is that??
I hope they have Rob Schrab (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rob_Schrab) help write some riffs like he did for the MST3K version.
I actually find that kinda lame. Mostly because CT's riffing of it is only going to draw instant comparisons to the MST3K version. Besides, the MST3K version is great and I don't see any need for a "re-riffing." There's plenty of other god awful movies out there for them to riff. This decision seems really odd. Oh well.
Really? That sounds....redundant.
I'm sure it was something easy to snag and pretty much ready to go for the holiday season.
Interesting.......
Should be cool(North pole and all).
Maybe the CT gang are planning to redo some KTMA and Season one MST3K episodes?

They'll be compared to MST3K no matter what they do. I'm looking forward to this because I haven't seen the MST version and probably won't buy it because it's boxed with Manos, which I already have.

Joel said:
"This Saturday, November 1st, Cinematic Titanic rolls into The Family Arena in St. Louis, and since it officially is the beginning of the Holiday Season, we've decided to do a movie riffing holiday classic. That's right, we're re-riffing "Santa Claus Conquers the Martians"! This edition has completely different riffs from our MST3K version and also features several bonus minutes of the original movie that weren't featured in the MST version. We thought it would be a cool experiment to see what revisiting a movie after all these years would produce. Not to brag, but it's likely to be the riff-jam of the year!
Naturally, this means we'll be releasing a DVD version of Cinematic Titanic's "Santa Claus Conquers the Martians" just in time for the holidays on November 20th, as well as a series of holiday e-cards you'll be able to send to everyone on your gift list, whether you deem them "naughty" or "nice".

*sigh* Maybe in a Live event..
I dunno, it may turn out ok, but I would rather they riff on an old flick that Hasn't Been Riffed On Yet!! >:(
See, I always found the MST version to be a bit of a chore to get through, so I'm excited about the possibility of seeing it again in a different way. It's been ages since they tackled it, so I think it will be really interesting to see a fresh take on it after so long.

I agree. One of my least favorite episodes.
321- SANTA CLAUS CONQUERS THE MARTIANS
First shown: 12/21/91.
Opening: Crow and Tom are looking at Christmas catalogs.
Invention exchange: Wish squisher, misfit toys.
Host segment 1: Song: "A Patrick Swayze Christmas."
Host segment 2: J&TB look over tapes of cheesy Christmas specials.
Host segment 3: J&TB read their Christmas essays.
End: "Angels We Have Heard Are High," stocking time, letter, Mads exchange gifts.
Stinger: Bad martian's derisive laughter.
I'd like to see their version of Manos! :)

Same here. I'd be just as against the idea of Mike, Kevin, and Bill deciding to riff a movie that they already did on MST3K.
The movie is public domain (http://www4.archive.org/details/santa_claus_conquers_the_martians) aka free for them to riff. They'll never be able to replace the line
Vlodar: "Korg , crush them!" (don't remember the robot's name)
Crow or Tom in robot voice: "You were adopted."
Welp.
That's all I got.
Surely there was another PD Christmas movie they could have gotten?

Check out the one I linked to above. Short, yes, but it would have not been a retread, and they could have paired it with any number of PD christmas cartoons to bump up the length.

Interesting...
I haven't gone back to look at the other threads regarding Plan 9, so I may be mistaken here, but I don't seem to recall any huge waves being created when Mike re-did his Legend commentary with the three Riffers. So it's interesting to me that so many people (not just here but elsewhere) seem to have reservations about Cinematic Titanic's film choice. To me, it seems like Mike has done the same thing (and much more recently and with repeated material) and yet the Titans are met with more resistance. Why? I'm not trying to start anything, just genuinely curious. :)

Well, MST3K never riffed Plan 9. Mike did that as a solo riff right before he started up Rifftrax. So, it's a little different.
A lot of the resistance is probably due to the fact that there's a lot of nostalgia behind the MST3K episodes. So, when they go back to redo them the general consensus seems to be "What's the point? It was great the first time around." At least, that's how I feel.

I like this very much.
I look forward to this one. Enough time has passed since the original MST3K version that it will be interesting to see what they come up with.
Speaking of Xmas-riffing! Hopefully, Mike and co. will come up with something as cool as last year's Xmas present to all of us. That will be very hard to top. (Hint: Rudolph and Frosty's Christmas In July would come close!) :)
I don't see any reason to re-riff SCCTM. :-\

Yeah, I went back to the Plan 9 board to refresh my memory a bit, and I was pretty harsh on the guys for all the repeated material..
I feel a bit guilty now.. :-[
I think Plan 9 has been pretty popular as Video on Demand, which just speaks even more to the movie availability (ie, being on your shelves) being a key issue.
The two situations don't even compare.
While I agree it wasn't their best, SCCTM was considered a classic episode of a huge cult television series that just about every fan saw. I can't help but feel that part of the reason for this retread is the lack of public domain Christmas stuff. That's like if ten years from now, Penn & Teller released an episode of Bullshit on Creationism that had the exact same content and interviews, but with new cut away jokes.
The original Plan 9 commentary was on an obscure DVD that only devote fans really listened to and that was developed before Rifftrax came into exsistance, and was redone because it could now reach a larger audience and Kevin & Bill were online. That's like if the Creationism episode started as a five-minute Penn & Teller video on Youtube before Bullshit was even pitched, and then expanded and improved on when the show hit television.

After what everyone went through with
Godzilla vs Megalon - which was PD when they riffed it and then Toho got the rights back - I wouldn't risk any film that the original owner is in a position to grab it back (like Fox) if I were them.
The makers of SCCTM are probably so out of the running on that it's not funny.
I'm interested in seeing a riff of the WHOLE movie after all these years. My only question is what will a showing of this be without "A Patrick Swayze Christmas" and "A Child's Christmas in Space"? :-\

Joel was sitting down in Oozing Skull, and ended up getting lost in the shadows. The next couple episodes he was standing at a podium, now he's got a railing like Josh and Trace do on top.
After having seen this live in St Louis, I can say that the re-riffing is fine and nothing broke. I was a tiny bit skeptical going into it (a retread? come on!) Some jokes were in the same vein as the original ones, but there's only so much you can do since the movie is still the same movie. Mostly anyway. It has some additional footage not used in the MST episode so there is some added value if you are a 'I already bought it once' kinda person (man I hope you aren't Evil Dead fans if that's the case)
It might be heretical, but I think the CT version maybe slightly better than the original. There are many jokes that were impossible to have made in the original (since the referred thing hadn't happened yet!) so it's all good. Your mileage may vary and you can always vote with your wallet.
Don't let your first instinct swindle you out of some good laughs is all I'm saying.
I started watching the MST3K version this morning. If I've ever seen it it's been at least 10 years. So far it's great, this will be a tough one to top.

I was a little dubious about this one, but I saw the trailer on Youtube and I'm convinced it'll be at least as funny as the original. Loved the Santa themed . . . theme in the background.
Think of the positives.....
- The whole movie this time - including the songs (I hope)
- Josh and Mary Jo weren't with the show then so they'll add something new automatically.
- We could hear some of the jokes that got voted down the first time.
- Everyone has the benefit of hindsight going into it.
And other things. :)
The trailer was really funny.

They're licensing things as they go, so weather it's PD or not doesn't enter into it, it's more the distribution costs. It'd be nice if they could get it out in stores, but I think doing it in house like they're doing keeps costs down.
But they'll make a lot more money and fans this way.

If they can't afford to advertise the product, they're not likely to convince new people to pick them up.
And if they also can't afford to mass-produce or distribute them in the first place, I don't think it really matters.

I think it's the exaggerated size of the ears and head compared to the body. And don't worry, I have a goatee as well. My wife actually prefers that I have it.
I do have big ears that stick out a bit, so it's not too far off, really. My wife prefers the goatee, too. My English ancestry saw to it that my chin is a bit lacking, so I compensate with the hair to create the illusion of a chin.

QuoteMeh. Rifftrax doesn't beat the value of seeing a horrible movie riffed for the first time, and not having to see it beforehand.
And?... A lot of KTMA episodes were re-riffed during the first season of MST3K.. what difference does it make? I think it's a great way to see a fresh take on a classic moment of MST3K history.
I tell whiny fans this; stop bitching and enjoy it. The more MST3K related stuff I see from the alumni, the better... I just miss Crow and Tom most of all... oh... and Dr. F and Frank.... and Joel and Mike.... and pretty much everything MST3K had. But I still love the riffs however I can get 'em... I mostly forget that Bill and Kevin are being themselves during Rifftrax and paste a big silhouette sticker to the screen during the movie... is that creepy?

Let them have fun... I have fun watching them have fun. it's a hoot!
I can't wait for it. I want more CT...

I'd like more Film Crew too, though I don't necessarily find it superior to Rifftrax. I believe that a continuation of The Film Crew series is more likely to happen than an MST3K reunion. However, let's think about this. Mike, Kevin, and Bill recorded those episodes before Rifftrax took off, three years ago. They sold very well for Shout Factory, but I doubt they made enough money to make the guys seriously consider abandoning Rifftrax in favor of continuing Film Crew. They're just trying to focus on what most customers seem to want based on what sells well.
That still leaves us with the option of them working on Film Crew as a side project while they continue keeping tabs on Rifftrax. They actually seem to be making some headway in that by bringing in new talent. Giving customers more options helps the site grow.
Customer actions speak louder than words, so here's my thoughts on what to do if you want more Film Crew:
#1: Buy all the Film Crew DVDs. Get your friends to buy em. Watch em on Hulu. You've probably already done this, so let's move on.
#2: Buy all the Rifftrax Shorts. Remind the guys how much you love to see them riff on old public domain stuff. A Rifftrax Shorts DVD is coming soon, and that will be a lot like a Film Crew DVD, minus the host segments with Bob Honcho. While you're at it, get "Missile to the Moon". It's one of the most Film Crew-esqe movie choices they've offered, and yet it's one of the lowest selling titles. That doesn't send a good message to the bean counters. "At present the bigger titles -- and the NEWER titles -- sell way, way better than anything more obscure. This is true about certain movie genres, too. And I don't mean a small difference, but 80% less revenue." - Bill Corbett
#3: Buy the Rifftrax Presents titles. Particularly the ones that don't have Kevin and Bill on them. Why, you ask? Because I don't think you'll be able to have it both ways. If Rifftrax can survive a couple months without Mike/Kevin/Bill's direct involvement in the recording of new content, that leaves them more time to work on other projects...like Film Crew. However, as long as Rifftrax needs them to constantly record new stuff to keep sales going, they'll probably be too busy. Give the new people a shot.
#4: Buy iRiffs titles for the kind of movies you'd like them to do. If they become moderately good sellers, it could help prove that A) lots of customers have copies of the DVD or B) lots of customers are willing to buy a VOD of the PD title. This could help justify making an "official" riff for it.

I'm sorry. Was that a rhetorical question? I thought you wanted an answer.
I'd love to see them do some more Film Crew episodes, even if they only do a handful a year. I'd settle for less Rifftrax if it would mean seeing them do the whole shebang every now and then.
As great as it would be they've already pretty much ruled it out.
Hopefully they'll start doing some more Rifftrax completes.
If they did do more "Film Crew" it would probably just be "Rifftrax" because they don't have time to do the host segments, and why should they be bothered anyway? I don't feel like the "premise" really added anything, aside from putting them on camera. It was a little weird, to be honest. I felt like instead of one guy and three robots trapped on a spaceship forced to watch movies, it was three guys trapped in a basement forced to do commentary. I don't get the whole headset, lunch break thing. It reminded me of Saw. But with headsets and lunch breaks.

QuoteHi Everyone,
We are proud to announce that the latest episode of Cinematic Titanic: "Santa Claus Conquers the Martians" goes on sale at midnight est.
The DVD ($14.99) is available at our STORE and following tradition, comes with an autographed thank you card from one of the Titans (psst, this episode is Joel). You can also Download ($9.99) the episode from our partner, EZTakes. It's the fastest way to own it and it's easy to burn a dvd to watch on your home theater system. Both are available worldwide.
Check out the trailer on our homepage.
We're proud of the way this experiment turned out, but for you MSTies out there who are concerned over our decision to re-riff SCCTM, I give you the earnest assessment of Brian Henry, Co-Founder of Satellite News – The Official Mystery Science Theater 3000 Fan site (how's that for MSTie cred), who saw the live riff in St. Louis and wrote in his review:
"As you're no doubt aware, the movie riffed this evening was "Santa Claus Conquers the Martians." Some people have expressed their concerns about this choice, and have wondered if there were any riffs left to do that hadn't already been done in the MST3K episode. I am happy to announce that there are. The CT crew brought an entirely new take on the movie and did not repeat a single riff from the MST3K version. And nearly every riff was a hit, bringing waves of laughter from the crowd. Plus they had the added bonus of not having to edit the movie for time, like they did for MST3K, so there were scenes they were able to riff that weren't included in the previous version. I can honestly say that I enjoyed the CT treatment immensely and was not disappointed in the least. I look forward to seeing it released on DVD."
We hope you enjoy the episode and spread the cheer by buying many copies for gifts.
Happy Holidays!

Speaking of home damage..
The house next door to me had an attic fire today as smoke was blowing into my house.. I thought it was my house at first, and I had to call 911 for the fire dept ..
Took'em about 10 minutes to arrive and then took them a bit to get up in the attic to put it out.
Looks like it was electrical, and the water damage from the fire dept was extensive.
Looks like it may even be condemed..
And I just had my house appraised at $118,000 for a FHA refinance, which will pay off our 2007 Toyota Sienna, saving us around $325 a month :highfive:
Just in time for the holidays

Yeah, can you guys pause your downloads so I can get mine faster? Thanks!
I still haven't watched the last one so I just ordered the DVD. Also I am a sucker for the cards....
Much as I love owning a physical DVD, I usually do the download-and-burn-my-own route, because it's cheaper, and I can't afford to spend all my money on riffing ventures. Heck, I still haven't bought "Legacy of Blood" yet.
I do look forward to checking this one out eventually, though. It'll be the second time I'll have bought CT's take on something that I already own a riffed version of on DVD. :P

Well, I've got it downloaded and burned now, but due to work and Cub Scouts tonight, I still haven't watched it yet. Need to get on that, I suppose.
Got my DVD yesterday and watched it last night..
They all did a GR8 Job on it (There were also some GR8 Riff Lines as well), but the movie is Still difficult to get through :speechless:
That movie is even more painful without the frequent host segments.... but I laughed til I hurt.
Excellent job!!!
Our copy just made it here to Australia!
Personally I think it's kinda lame. Tons of cheesy old movies out there to pick from and they decide to go for one they already riffed.
Finally watched it last night....... pretty good.
I tried to watch the MSt3K version right after that to compare, but the horridness of the moive combined with Nyquil put me out.
I will try again tonight.
In my opinion it is much better than the MST3k version.

I agree. Of course I was never a huge fan of the original version. I haven't been bowled over by Cinematic Titanic as of yet but I thought this was their funniest release so far. Still not much chemistry between the riffers but the writing was a little better here overall and they've restored my hope for future releases.

I figure CT didn't want to touch that one since it would spark the old Joel vs. Mike rivalry. Since Joel was the one to tackle SCCTM originally, it's fine if he decides to try it again. If he does a movie that Mike riffed on, everyone will start making comparisons that neither Joel or Mike want . . . or care about.
Yeah, that would lead to people claiming Joel was sending a message of "I could have done a better job than you and here is my proof."

My guess is that it was more likely to do with copyrigt issues. The martians film is public domain and has already been released by Rhino, so it's fair game. Not so sure if that's the case with the Santa Claus film.

Finally got my copy of this and watched it before work. Great stuff overall, it kind of struck me as the opposite pattern of the MST ep. Actually, according to its "Daddy-O's Drive-In Dirt" MST3KInfo page at http://www.mst3kinfo.com/daddyo/di_521.html:
"The movie is in public domain, so it's played frequently in its original Spanish during the holiday season. As a result (as strange as it may seem) it has become, for many Spanish-speaking TV viewers world wide, a holiday tradition as cherished as viewing It's A Wonderful Life and other holiday classics is for English-speaking Americans."

LOL. Only he can't hang it up in his office....
I saw it today its pretty funny and it was nice to see some of the missing footage from the orignal. But i have to say i like the original MST3k version better. Maybe its just because ive seen the MST3k version a millions times and im just used to it. I dont know. But as far as them doing "reriffing " KTMA years and Season one. I would be all for that. It would be interesting a more perfected riff on something like Robot Holocaust. As it is now i cant stand to watch the movie with or without the original MST3k riff.
Just saw this tonight. It's been so long since I saw the MSTK version... it was like new again. I have officially been off the CT bandwagon since the Wasp Woman and really have a tough time paying $9 for their riffs. As a gift to a friend at work who loves the original mstk, I bought it for them. So here are my thoughts.
The Good:
Chemistry is MUCH better. It feels a lot less scripted in comparison to the first CT releases. It did have a few laugh out loud moments... which really didn't happen for me in the early ones. The skit was not as dumb as what they have done in the past.
The Not-so-Good:
Not enough playful banter between the riffers. No running gags. The silhouette skit was still not funny. Personally they just need to scrap it... it never seems to work on any level. And are they ever going to explain what the heck this time capsule/spaceship theme thing is all about? It just seems like an unfinished idea to me.
Overall a good riff that gives me more hope they'll give us something better in the future. In the meantime Quiptracks, Rifftrax, and ICWXP will be getting my hard earned cash.

Joel has said that the whole Time Tube thing will be explained as they go on. And I agree that the silhouette skit wasn't all the wonderful.... But then again Joel and some of the other guys have stated that it was more of a live show thing. And it's funded by the five guys (and gal) themselves, so the DVD sales help out on the cash flow.
Maybe I'm too optimistic, but I do like CT as much as I like RT.
Watching the releases in order, I do like that details as to where they are and why are leaking out slowly via the introductions. I also think the skits are stedily getting better. They were pretty tedius at first, but the last few are getting some laughs out of me, especially the gifts in this one and the game show in Legacy of Blood
I think they're getting better. The first few CT releases were rather weak, but I don't mind buying them. They're trying to get a whole new premise going, and they're trying to do it on their own money. We're expecting "MST3k season 11" wonderfulness, but it's going to take them some time to build up a decent budget for doing everything they want to do.

Not much. But I'm thinking more of doing the skits, and building up the back story for the whole project. In any case, what they've done so far is enjoyable enough that I'm willing to buy some more, and they do seem to be getting better with the newer releases.
I agree, they are getting better. Wasp Women Id have to say is probably the "least funny" for me anyways- Santa Claus has to be the funniest one yet, and Oozing Skull is a close second.
I think they just need time to get their writing back on track. Except for Mary Jo Pehl all of these guys have been out of the game for a long time. And even with Pehl, it had been 8 years between MST3k and CT. Not that they all haven't been writing, but novels and articles and tv shows and America's Funniest Home Videos are not quite the same thing as MST3K and that style of riffing. Writing crotch impact jokes for AFHV does not keep your chops up for a project like CT. I expect that they will get better with time.
At least Mike stayed in the same genre of movie criticism and Kevin sort of did the same with his segments on NPR (and his book was about movies but not necessarily ripping them apart). Bill's an active standup comedian so at least he's got the timing down. That's probably why Rifftrax was pretty good from the start.
Perhaps that's why Joel decided to keep doing the live shows and hold off on the studio DVDs. Basically, the audiences are the guinea pigs that CT bounces its work off of to see what works. Why I have to pay $50 to be a guinea pig . . . But I digress. Joel said himself that they're not doing the movies they're touring with in studio until the end of the tour . . . whenever that is . . . because they're still fine-tuning the jokes. Taken from that standpoint, I can understand where he's coming from . . . I just don't have to like it.
I wrote up a little review of this episode. I hadn't watched it in years, but after a re-watch it felt like this episode doesn't hold up as well as the rest of CT's catalog.
