Doubt it would sell well enough to be profitable.

This question was thrown out there during that big debate a couple months back..

How much does it cost to make a Rifftrax? Or what is the break-even point?

Some of us have said they'd be willing to dig-deep for their particular choice, but the cost question has never been answered ???

Why not? Cinematic Titanic use studios and everything, and they seem to have made enough money to go and shoot 3 more episodes.

We can't tell you. But we can refer you to the last time we raised prices by a measly dollar - some people almost had heart attacks. And that was only a dollar.

oh yeah, I remember that, I think I thought of 3 movies for this hippothetical list, too bad they're all too old and probably won't sell well

Kinda why I said I doubt that doing this would be profitable. If people complain about prices going up by a dollar then they are not going to pay $10 for a crappy movie like MST3k showed.

I kinda prefer that Rifftrax stick with big name movies. There are plenty crap ones that are huge names to do. Come one ID4 and Battlefield Earth were pretty much destined for this. MST3k was possible because they could only afford movies like Manos and crap of that sort. Rifftrax is made to do the ones that MST3k always wanted to do, but never in a million years would be able to do unless they spent 3-6 years budget on 1 episode. Even then you are talking about something bottom of the budget barrel like Troll 2 or Over the Top.

Rifftrax is perfect for big name stuff. MST3k was for stuff you'd never see otherwise.

Well if we had a list to start with that were "definitely doable" then that wouldn't be a bad idea. The way things work right now, though, we usually pick a movie only a couple of weeks before it gets written and recorded. So to come up with a list of 10 or so would be a little more difficult.

It's not an impossible idea, just not likely to happen. And if it does I doubt it would be just a 20q's - we'd have to make you work really hard for that one :)

I propose a massive real world scavenger hunt!  Rifftrax is too big for the intranets.

I'm all out for kicks...and every inch of me spells EXCITEMENT!

Oh, I remember..
But I wasn't one of 'those' price complainers; but I was one of those complaining a bit about the recent choices.. Back when there was an issue.. ::)

BUT... I'd pay Xtra for my choice, and It'd get me 'silenced' once and for all about that certain movie I keep mentioning, so we'd all win in the end! ;D

Can I just write my own R ed D awn riff and then email it to Bill 40 times a day until he makes Mike and Kevin do it?

That wasn't as much a question as it was a warning.  Prepare yourself Corbett.  BWA HA HA HA.   :P

It actually would miss the point of 20q's if we chose the next one, since the idea of 20q's is to guess the next one coming out...

btw, you guys been busy or something? no rifftrax this week, my laughter is missing out :p

That is why it would be a rare occurrence. The person who won would be IMed a list by Torgo/Mike/Bill/Kevin/etc and they would IM back their choice. They would then be sworn to secrecy and would not be allowed to participate in the next 20Qs.

Well that's why, if it were to happen, (which is a big if) it would be more like "Send us your requests. We'll provide you with a list of "screened and approved" choices from this list. And one of these will be the winner." Narrowing it down to just one is too problematic. But I could see something like that maybe seeing the light in the future.

We had done it with some Homepage Polls in the past, but people then get upset about "Why show a Poll if you're not going to use the winner from said poll?" and that's why we stopped doing that - because sometimes the winner isn't actually doable. And we don't like disappointments, and agree that it was a silly thing to do.

Yeah, put me down as a "no" for this one.

Folks, this is a creative process. Sometimes the jokes flow, sometimes they don't. And telling the guys to riff a certain film is a bit like saying, "Hey! Tell me a joke about hamburgers!" Yeah, it might be funny, but there's a good chance that it'll be pretty lame.  I'd rather hear a funny riff for a film that I was lukewarm for than a mediocre riff for a film that was popularly requested.

(And guys, for Pete's sake- let it drop. I think that Dungeons & Dragons would make a good riff, but Mike's seen it and gave away his copy as a prize in a prior contest, so it seems that he disagrees. I suspect that the guys have seen the Two Films That People Won't Shut Up About and have determined that they can't do anything with them. Saying another 1,000 times that you'd like to see something riffed isn't going to change that.)

Okay, word of advice: Don't google "Bootblacking" looking for pics of those Japanese kids.  Just don't.
