Okay, I've had a night of sleep and my mental cache is clearer now, so let me ask a simple question:

Bill (or Conor), how well did Independence Day do?  Really well? Better than average? Middle of the road? Disappointing?  Down there with Troll 2?

I ask this for a very simple reason: When I talk to casual movie fans, ID4 was one of those films that gets consistently mentioned as "the worst film that I've ever seen" but it did great box office sales and sold a lot of DVDs and VHS tapes. It seems like that one would have been a natural best seller. But if a slam-dunk title like that didn't sell... well, I could understand the resistance to tackle anything older. If it did sell well, then I'm doing my usual worrying over nothing thing.

Good question...I was thinking the same thing when I suggested X-Files.

Its the right age of film, DVD's are cheap and easy to get and it had all 3 riffers...

I Like Bill.
Bill is alright in my book.

I here ya James.. My enthusiasm has been set back quite a bit as well :(

I'll post my thought here as well...

I have bought Every Single RiffTrax available, and will continue to buy what ever they put out, but I have been quite disappointed in the selections as of late.
To be honest; The last time I set foot in a movie theater was Star Wars Episode 3. No Lie! And it's not because I don't have a life (though I rarely step foot out of my home office cause I do run a business), but because (Now All you younger folks out there - don't take this the wrong way) but I can't tolerate the others around me talking, carrying on, cell phone conversations, etc., and also because I really don't care to see anything that has been released, not to mention the 'whoring' movie prices along with concessions.. I'd rather give Rifftrax $3.99 than a movie theater $20+..

Now that said, I see clearly Greg's frustration, simply because his lists, along with many other 'Top 10' list, shows some 'older' flicks, and it just seems to me that we 'small minority' as Conor likes to call us here on the forum are being ignored (because we know we're being heard), but I'd like to think that this 'small minority' has a bit more weight as a concensus of many others out there that we would like to see a few more 80's & 90's flicks from our lists targeted for Riffing.

I understand the business aspect Whole Heartidly and commend you for targeting the popular market to make RiffTrax a bigger success. Keeping your customer 'in the know' helps a great deal so we don't think we're falling on deaf ears is all I'm saying..

RVR you never cease to amaze. Great contribution.

I think it'd be fun, though it's kind of on the long side.  I'd like to do a best picture winner at some point in time.  Do you think a lot of people own it?  Nobody really seems to talk about it any more.

Ah Finally found where Conor asked this.

According to the numbers that I've seen, The Departed was the ninth best selling disc last year, selling 7.5 million copies. It sold about 700,000 copies more than #10, Spiderman 3. Just an FYI.

That's a fair point.  But now the next question from a business standpoint is: how many of those people who bought 7.5 million copies of The Departed will be in the Rifftrax target demo.  I suspect a higher percentage of Spiderman 3 owners hit the Rifftrax sweet spot.

I'm all out for kicks...and every inch of me spells EXCITEMENT!

Bill with an awesome post as usual.

Comments (aka Fan Reviews) are something that could be added in short order... I will ask around and see if that's a feature we want to put out now, instead of saving it for Version3 of the site. (Version3 is the one coming out in a few long months.)

torgosPizza

I know. I guess I need to stop stringing you along.

But it IS Coming, slowly but surely. And it'll be worth it. Just hang in there a little longer.

I'm still waiting on an answer for my Departed question

Haven't seriously taken a look at it after we did those clips with Lowtax.  I think it'd be fun, though it's kind of on the long side.  I'd like to do a best picture winner at some point in time.  Do you think a lot of people own it?  Nobody really seems to talk about it any more.

I have no idea, I know I own it

anyone else?

I've never heard of it.

And torgos...you keep teasing us with this "new site" in a "few months."  You're such a site-tease.

It's a great movie, Rosario Dawson plays this college student who is brutally raped, and after suffering from depression and addiction, decides to go out for revenge............... or was that Descent?

I'd like to say I'm also in favor of the idea of experimenting with "Sponsor-a-Trax".

Set up a goal meter, then wait for it to reach full (dunno what time limit to give it. maybe 3 months tops? debatable.). After the goal is reached, the fans can reasonably expect a trax to be made for it within a month or so. Everyone who donated $3.99 (regular price) or greater, automatically gets the trax added to their purchased trax list since they've already paid for it. Those who donate more than $N get a poster or t-shirt or something (whatever $N qualifies for) as a bonus. Then we see how well the trax does with new purchases after the fact.

I mean this is basically just pre-paying for a trax, so you don't have to worry IF it will sell, because it already will have.

If for some reason the goal is not met within whatever time limit is set, have a mechanism in place to allow people to automatically transfer the use of those donation funds into the purchase of a different Rifftrax (or multiple trax depending on how much of a donation they had to spread around) of their choice, or to the next Sponsor-a-Trax movie selection, or whatever (merchandise, etc).

Sounds like a laugh riot. I can practically hear the riffs now.

Really? you have never heard of it?

I think my idea about "sponsoring" a Rifftrax just might have legs.  It could be the only way we get to see such long awaited films as Dune and Red Dawn get riffed.

I'm not sure how they would handle the logistics of it, but I'm sure something can be set up.  The big question, which is still unanswered, is how much would it take?  How much would they need to ensure that they don't lose money on a Red Dawn rifftrax?  Or a Dune rifftrax?

I would like a Dune riff too, since I already have the dvd with both the theatrical version and the alternate version that would always get shown on tv that had the more informative intro.
