...that the DVD doesn't appear to come with 3-D glasses?  :'(

I think that the contemporary adaptation of "Beowulf" is a lot easier to enjoy when lances and beer mugs and Grendel's MILF are swinging off the screen and close enough to touch.

Oh yeah, I was totally hoping for some cardboard 3-d glasses, with the blue and red lenses  ;)

Why exactly is it that the newer 3-D technology (with the clear lenses) doesn't translate to DVD?

If you are talking about the technology used in Imax-3D, that uses 2 projectors, each with a polarizing filter, with one filter turned 90°.  The glasses have polarizing filters that allow each eye to see only the image from one projector.

That method can't be reproduced on a single screen at home, if you could get the left and right projector films on 2 DVDs you could replicate it at home with 2 projectors and filters....

Shutter glasses work really well for most people, but the frame rates have to be higher than standard video, so it's mostly been done on computers, this is where you have LCD shutters in the glasses and they are linked to the display, the display quickly alternates between the right and left images and the glasses open and close the shutters over each eye so the correct eye sees the correct image, if not done fast enough you'll notice flicker and get a headache.

The red/green or red/blue glasses method only works for black and white films, that's why it has been abandoned.

There is another method that uses one dark filter over one eye, this only works for motion, since the brain has a slight delay processing darker images you can use that to get a slight 3D effect on things that are moving, once things stop moving the delay doesn't matter and the effect is lost.

I seeeeeeeee =o

That explains it then. o.o

Thanks Marty, that's been bugging me for awhile, but it makes sense now.

The red/blue type does seem to work somewhat with color though, perhaps not great.  I have a video game that uses it for some levels (Sly 3 for PS2) and one movie on DVD that has a single 3D sequence (Freddy's Dead:  The Final Nightmare).  It's kind of off putting after awhile and can give me a headache, which is I guess why it's only used for short periods.

I am personally disappointed the movie didn't come with blinders and earmuffs, because I think with them on the movie is a lot better.
