Of course, if you're going to start conversations about the feasibility of amber preservation based on the oldest extant sample deposits, would it then also be appropriate to mention the fact that the dilophosaurus NEVER EXISTED AND WAS MADE UP FOR THE BOOK? ;)

Dilophosaurus did exist, the only thing they got right was the head shape with the crests, in the movie they were too small (should have been 20 feet long) and there's no basis in science for the fanned out display or the spitting.  They are one of the early Jurassic dinos that would need amber several times as old as the oldest found in order to bring it back.

B)  Was this covered in more detail in the book?  If so, what was the cause and why was it important other than a chance to show the dinosaurs up close without them eating anyone.

Just read that chapter again, it was a stegosaurus in the book, and the reason it happened every six weeks was gizzard stones.  Like many birds and retiles they ate stones that they used in their gizzards to grind up food, every six weeks they would regurgitate the stones because they were worn out and eat new ones, that's when they would accidentally eat the lilac berries that were on the ground with the rocks.

I learned that bathrooms are somehow readily available on an automatic track tour even though you're not supposed to exit the vehicles.

I  learned that, despite how cool it was, it's probably not a good idea to resurrect the T-Rex from extinction. There's a reason it became extinct and we should just leave it at that.

I also learned that if we ever do bring dinosaurs back, they will somehow be able to survive in our modern ecosystem as opposed to the ecosystem that existed millions of years ago (ie: oxygen concentration, air pressure, humidity, modern plantlife, etc).

They actually did address that in the movie. One of the Triceratops got sick from eating modern plants. As for the other bits, I assume those are taken care of by the bullfrog DNA used to fill in gaps.

so why weren't the berries in the droppings?

Checking the droppings was only mentioned very breifly in the book, Ellie just took the vets word for it, she never inspected it.  The book said since they are constantly eating if they were eating the berries they would constantly be sick, and they also observed them on video a lot and they never ate the plants.

The movie and book really are compleatly different, only the names and the basic outline of the story are the same.  In the book the chaper we are talking about was also the one where they find a dino egg shell and find out the dinos are breeding.

Gaseous Snake

I learned never to go to Effingham's Taco Bell. Now that city is known by me as both "The place with the big cross, and That place that has the really bad Taco Bell".

TigerofRobare

I learned to never employ anyone fatter than Drew Carey on my computer system.

GLaDOS

I cite Michael J Nelson, who says "The awesome and unpredictable forces of nature will not be controlled by man.".

Jackster

I learned something very important today.

These two REALLY ARE related!

I wonder if they were created in the laboratory, yet separated at birth?

The fat one does look a little like Danny Devito... >:D

We learned that messing with nature is perfectly fine (hey, it's the reason YOU'RE alive past thirty); it's hiring cast members of Seinfeld that gets you in trouble every time (just ask that comedy club that hired Michael Richards!).

MST3Kgirl

I learned to forego the expensive adult help and when in peril, just sit a tween nerd girl at the computer and she will fix everything up real nice now. And cheap..

I learned that ice cream will soothe the pain of murder around you.
