Ah yes, finally, Norbit getting the accolades it so deserves.

That aside, which hey, people who create fat suits for a living deserve something I guess, I really like the nominees this year.  I'll just go ahead and make my picks now.

Best Picture:  I think it will be There Will Be Blood, which I'd be fine with that or No Country.
Actor: Daniel Day Lewis.  I will actually pitch a fit if it's Depp, love him though I do, give the man a million Oscars, just not this year.
Actress: Marion Cotillard
Supporting Actor: Javier *swoon* Bardem
Supporting Actress: I think it will be Cate Blanchett, but Kelly MacDonald was robbed.
Director: I think it will be whoever's flick doesn't get best picture.
Adapted Screen: No Country, as that film was the definition of a perfect adaptation
Original Screen: I think it'll be Juno

I haven't seen any of the foreign noms yet, but I need to.  Did anyone?  How were they?

Me either, but The Counterfeiters is meant to be good.  I'm amazed that 4 Months, 3 Weeks, and 2 Days hasn't been nominated, because it won big in Cannes this year.

Here's my picks:

Best Picture: There Will Be Blood.  People seem to be raving over this movie at the moment, and it just seems more "Oscary" than it's closest rival, No Country.
Actor: Daniel Day-Lewis.  All the critics have mentioned his performance, and he's been excellent in every bloody film he's ever been in.
Actress: I'd like to see either Laura Linney or Ellen Page win.  Linney because she's been nominated a couple of times now and hasn't won (also because she was really nice when I saw her at the BFI film festival).  Ellen Page because I really loved her in it.
Supporting Actor:  I would be utterly amazed if anyone but Javier Bardem won.
Supporting Actress: Cate Blanchett's really good in I'm Not There, but I'm gonna be daring and go with Saoirse Ronan for Atonement.
Director: The Coen Brothers.  It'll be the consolation for not getting best picture.
Adapted Screenplay: Atonement looks like the red-headed stepchild of the Oscars this year, but I thought it was a perfect adaptation of a quite complicated book.  No Country will probably take it though.
Original Screenplay: Juno.  I think it'll be a way to reward the movie without having to give it any of the major prizes.
Animated Movie: I think the only accurate prediction I can make is that Surf's Up won't win.

Did anybody else see Michael Clayton?  If so, did it strike you as anything other than competent?  I thought it was tough to tell from a John Grisham adaptation.  I've seen the four Best Pic nominees other than Atonement, and enjoyed There Will be Blood the most of any of them.  Then No Country for Old men, then Juno (love/hate), then Michael Clayton.

Yeah, I'm actually really shocked it's getting all these nods.  It was decent.  I felt the same way toward MC as I felt about Erin Brockovich.  It was fine and all, I'm just kind of surprised at its apparent Oscar-worthiness.

Word.  Which, ps, if you haven't seen Hard Candy yet, SEE IT, and keep Juno in mind.  I spent most of Juno thinking "holy shit, that's the same girl, and she's likeable and awesome and not terrifying, she's phenomenal."

Oh excellent, so happy to see that "Falling Slowly" from Once got nominated.  I loved that movie, and that moment in the film where they both play that is quite wonderful.

As for the rest, eh.  I've only seen No Country For Old Men and There Will Be Blood of the Best Picture nominees, and both disappointed me a lot.

I second this.  My absolute favorite nomination this year.  I just hope there is an Oscar ceremony this year, so these two will get their much deserved moment on the world's biggest stage.

Actress: Marion Cotillard

I saw a picture of her without her Pilaf makeup - she's lovely!

My picks:

Best Picture: Atonement   -  I think this because it's such perfect traditional "Oscar" material, but I'd like "No Country" to get it.
Best Actor: Daniel Day Lewis  -  I liked Johnny Depp a lot, but his version of Sweeny wasn't my favorite.
Best Actress: Julie Christie
Best Director: Coen Bros.
Supporting Actor: Casey Affleck (maybe?)
Supporting Actress: Tilda Swinton
Best Original Screen Play: Juno  - I think this will be it, but I have a fondness for Brad Bird's work...
Score: The Kite Runner
Film Editing: Diving Bell & The Butterfly

I'm surprised that "The Simpsons Movie" didn't get an Animated Feature nomination. I wouldn't have expected it to win (certainly not against "Ratatouille"), but I expected it to be nominated just because it's the Simpsons.

Also, I'm disappointed (though unsurprised) that "Hot Fuzz" didn't at least get a Best Editing nomination.

What's Persepolis? I usually keep pretty good tabs on the animated features that come out. They're usually the only oscar-nominated films I watch. Never heard of this one, though.

Persepolis is a graphic novel that came out a few years ago.  It's about a girl's experiences in the Middle East.

I agree somewhat.  I thought it was pretty much a by the book film but what really set it apart for me was that it had a singular point of view - corporations are evil - which it followed with the fervor and tenacity of a pitbull gone mad.  I couldn't help but applaud the film's fanaticism.

I'm disappointed there was no love shown for Zodiac or The Assassination of  Jesse James By the Coward Robert Ford (except for Casey Affleck, who is my personal choice for that category [sorry, Javier Bardem]).

I know I'm supposed to be happy that the Coen Brothers finally get their Oscar for best film if they win but that's tempered by the Scorsese factor.  They win but it's for one of their lesser works.

Oscars to Eddie Vedder and Dewey Cox: Eat our golden balls, we want a boring song and dance show, thank you very much.
I'm all out for kicks...and every inch of me spells EXCITEMENT!
