Why are they on dial-up though when this whole site is dedicated to a sort-of cutting edge use of the internet.  Get high-speed!  Your getting ripped off.

Its not always feasible. Especially if you live in a rural area where dial up is the only option.

seriously though, where does this guy surf the internet at?  My hometown paper is full of flashing ads and flash video, and the news is the stuff that isn't moving.  You just train your brain to look for what you want, or you get ad blockers and adjust settings.

The paper is full of flashing ads?  I have to get a subscription to that paper...  Just because people can make huge flashing signatures, doesn't mean they should.  I'm no more behind the times than anybody else because I've grown tired of changing .gif images every 3 seconds.   I also know how to use adblock and all that jazz but there are a lot of people who don't, and like Gammer said there are still people who don't have high speed internet and so huge signatures etc.,  can bring sites to a stand still for those users.  There is also the case of people looking to start participating in these forums, and that some may not come here because of it (and yes there's a flip side that people may not come if they can't post signatures etc., so there are two sides to it).  I just thought it warranted a conversation.

I live in a rural area.

How do people with dial-up download the Rifftrax without tearing their eyes out?

That's fine.  I'm just taking a side in the conversation.

He must be refering to my avatar.  I had no idea it bothered anyone.  I was just trying to get in the holiday season but I could make a different one if more people object to it.

I think he's really referring more to people's signatures than their avatars -- correct me if I'm wrong there, SlickRick.  I don't think anybody's specifically objecting to your highly festive bottle of Yoohoo.

If that is what he's talking about, I have to admit that I somewhat agree.  But only for aesthetic reasons.  Animated, picture-clogged signature lines are an affront to my sense of efficiency and design.  People seem to like them, though, so I can live with it.

As to whether the signatures dissuade new people from joining the forum, that doesn't bother me at all.  This community is what it is and, at least at the moment, what it is includes big, ugly, flashing signatures.  If potential new members aren't interested enough in the real content of the forums to either ignore signatures or take the time to learn how to turn them off, then I'm glad they're choosing to stay away.

...

I had like, a mental break-down not too long ago due to all of those goofy signature pictures. In retaliation i started posting super mega-huge pix that got progressively bigger each week. They included The Iron Giant, Andre The Giant & The Jolly Green Giant. I thought that i was making a point, but basically i did nothing but contribute to the problem... yeah me! Woo-Hoo! I'm an idiot.

Anyway, thankfully since then the mods have limited the space available for signature images. So, while you still have the option to turn them off... at least they'll never get bigger than they are right now.

Yeah, no matter how much silliness you have going on in your signature, your post is almost always the same size.  Whether it is all white space, or something more interesting is up to you.  I don't see the problem.

If anything, I'd prefer larger avatars. I've had some great ones in the past I couldn't use because when they get shrunk down, they're too hard to see. I wouldn't mind if they restricted signatures to just text though.

I disable signatures because I find it more distracting than whitespace.  If I want to read a thread, I want to read a thread.

I like the avatars though.
