I'm gonna second ChrisHanel's post.  I say this is great.  While , personally, i prefer Mike's style of riffing, i started watching MST3K during the Joel years, and I'm happy as a pig in , um, excrement at the news of Joel going back to riffing.  The more the merrier.

Got to agree with more is better theory.  I threw my loyalty behind Rifftrax in my post, but there's enough loyalty to go around if CT is good, and with Joel and Trace riffing I can't imagine it being bad.  The only thing that could make me choose is if it gets too expensive to keep up with new MST releases, Rifftrax, and Cinematic Titanic. If CT keeps the price reasonable (and I have to imagine they'll fight to keep prices low, maybe a price similar to if they released the dvd physically) then it shouldn't be a problem.

I mentioned this in my introductory "Hi" post a few months back, but I'm a latecomer to the world of MST3K and even RiffTrax.  I didn't start watching MST3K until after the show had ended and was only being shown in reruns on Sci-Fi, and those were Mike episodes.  It wasn't until I started collecting the DVD sets and discovered DAP that I became familiar with Joel... and even though I prefer Mike's riffing... I like them both.

I also didn't discover RiffTrax until three months ago, but have been eagerly collecting them all and only have maybe a dozen left to get.  (Well... that's not entirely true... I own ALL of the RiffTrax, I just haven't gotten around to buying or renting all the DVDs to go along with them yet.)

The point of all this is that from my angle, this is terrific news!  First I find RiffTrax... and now the other two projects are announced.  I'm like a kid in a candy store and will undeniably support all three projects and root for their success.

Long live everybody with the talent and humor to riff!  Y'all may drive me to bankruptcy trying to keep up ;) but it'll be a helluva ride!

Man, this is exciting news. I love both Joel and Mike, though Mike was my favourite. I will give the first one a go at least, and I really hope it's great!

Well, as a long-time MSTie since season one...
And as a fan of Mike Nelson and Rifftrax who was one of the first to register on these boards even though I don't post often...
Let be just say:

LONG LIVE RIFFTRAX!!

LONG LIVE CINEMATIC TITANIC!!

I STILL FEEL INDIFFERENT TOWARDS THE NEW MST3k.COM ANIMATED SHORTS, BUT I DON'T WANT TO JUMP TO ANY FAULTY CONCLUSIONS UNTIL I SEE ONE AND/OR GET MORE INFORMATION!!

Chaos

I'm a big fan of riffing in general. I'm also a very strong believer that competition is good, and more is better.

However, a small part of the cynic inside me still says, "Wow... how convenient for them. Not a peep for years, and now that Mike has put everything on the line and made riffing successful again, they all jump back in the water."

Don't get me wrong... I'm thrilled that there is going to be more material out there, and even more MST3K-caliber "bad" movies to choose from. But at the same time, I have WAY more respect for Mike putting his ass on the line when he didn't know whether or not there would even be a market for this kind of thing any more. Everyone coming after has the advantage of far less risk in an already proven market.

So... I guess I'm saying I'm cautiously optimistic, but I'm never going to lose that respect or love for RiffTrax and Mike Nelson, for being the first (and bravest) to put his hat back in the arena.

Just Some Guy

I want Cinematic Titanic to be great.  I'm not going to declare it great before I get to see it but I want it to be great.  The mst3k.com stuff I have effectively no hope for, but CT is an exciting announcement.

I will add my voice to those saying that I hope that Rifftrax and CT have a friendly relationship and performers cross back and forth.  I know that Mike and Joel may not be able to do that as much as other people just because they have to be involved with each release of their respective projects but please don't burn any bridge between you.  I know that this may be out of the hands of people on the Rifftrax side or it could be already too late (behind the scenes stuff can be so messy), but please if it's possible don't close that door.

Pak-Man

Well when I said "Rifftrax Forever," I meant I dont want CT to replace Rifftrax. There's room for both, but it doesn't matter how good/bad CT is, so long as Rifftrax keeps it coming. :^)

Chaos

That's a good way to put it, Pak (you dirty Nazi bastard). :)

4. Competition is good.

In a healthy capitalistic society, two competing entities earn market share by attempting to become more innovative and offering better content, and more of it, at a better price.  When there is no competition, there is no drive to innovate. Now, I will never accuse Rifftrax of not trying hard, as I have been more excited than anyone about the developments of the DIY website, the Rifftrax DVD player, and the ability to get more use out of my DVD collection. Furthermore, Rifftrax is not exactly operating in a vacuum -- they are competing with thousands of sources of entertainment to earn your 3-4 dollars every time they release a new track. But having a new entry into the "Riff Race" places an immediate need on Rifftrax to say to themselves, "Are we doing everything we can to make sure we're releasing the best product possible?" Anytime Rifftrax feels the need to try a bit harder, the consumers of their product win.

I like this economic view. In fact this was the first thought that came to my mind when I heard the news of Cinematic Titanic. I thought: "Looks like RiffTrax has its first real competition, and in the end the customer is gonna win".

Then I thought of all those other thoughts too  :P

Good input Chris.

I'm kinda hoping there will be a friendly rivalry between Mike and Joel, a' la' Jack Benny and Fred Allen, with them exchanging biting yet playful barbs in their respective projects and on their respective websites.

I'm hoping Mike dropkicks Joel, rips his leg off and then kicks Joel's ass him with Joel's own foot like on a celebrity deathmatch ;)

I'm really kidding.  That'd be a sight though.
mike5150 how tall are you?.....in gallons?

I was played a couple Joel episodes at Blockbuster today before my coworker just threw on a Mike one (coincidentally also with Trace though), so this is insanely great news to come home to....  I'd always worried about the day I'd run out of Joel episodes and would have nothing else to fall back on when I wanted a break from Rifftrax and the Film Crew....  insanely excited about this project and the possibilities from it's existence..

Riffageddon has begun leaving a trail of riffed & slaughtered bad movies in it's wake. All bad movies repent because the hour is at hand. That's right,  I'm looking at you, House of the Dead.

That's a lie. No one looks at House of the Dead.
