Awards are by definition popularity contests.

The problem with even trying to have the Grammys each year is that there is way too much music released during the year to fairly judge everything.  No one can listen to it all.  So it becomes a popularity contest to see who gets nominated, whether that popularity is measured in sales, radio play, mentions in Rolling Stone or the fact that they have been nominated in the past.  I see that some artists get nominations every time they put something out, probably unheard by the voters, simply because they have been up there before. 

Most years, my favorite album isn't even thought of for a Grammy.
