Or maybe they could encode it as a multi-part file (a la the DAP)...

AVI would work too...

Divx is Avi, just like Xvid and many others. And I know that with a wmv, the file size would be gigantic compared to Divx, which would probably be around 700 mb.

In any case, it really doesn't have to matter. There is a free program called DVD Flick that will take any type of video file, add extra audio tracks or subtitles to it if you want, and make the file into a DVD. If I feel my hard drive is starting to get bloated with movies, I'll just toss 'em through DVD Flick and make 'em into DVDs.

That is completely untrue.
Infact I have converted all of my RiffTrax DVD reauthors to WMV format to play on my portable device and I can "shrink" the entire movie down to 500 MB in size and the quality is as good as DivX (bitrate is between 700kb/s to 1000kb/s).

In fact I'd say WMV is very comparable to DivX for file size and quality. The problem is, not allot of people take the time to learn how to use Windows Media Encoder properly.

If anyone doesn't believe me, let me know? I'll post a link with a sample so you can compare.
(and no, I'm not talking about a link to the free previews on my page)

Another major advantage of Divx is that they already have an infrastructure created for selling and renting downloadable/streaming video.  They are also located in San Diego and are nice guys.

Switching gears....

Missile to the Moons should go out tomorrow.  We have a limited number of copies signed by both Mike and Fred, and they probably won't last too long once we start sending them out.  If you want a chance at getting one, it's probably best to buy before the RiffTrax comes out.

SecretAgentSuperDragon

So have you guys figured out yet how much it will cost to rent or buy the downloadable version of Missle to the Moon?

Here's an appearance by Fred on an episode of the greatly-missed Penn Radio:

http://www.pennfans.net/view/Audio_Archive/PennRadio/Penn.Jillette.Radio.Show.2006.11.27/

is that available on the podcast?  if so then I already have that somewhere and need to listen to it....

Just checked my iTunes. Yep.

Ok, I have a question regarding the DIVX version of this rifftrax - Will we be able to download it, and then burn that download to DVD easily? And will that DVD that we burn play in most dvd players?

Qrusher14242

hope its Divx so i can play it in my DVD player that plays Divxs heh Cant stand WMV

gbeenie

I agree. Sorry, gammer, but .wmv is a terrible idea (as would be .mov or .rmv). Proprietary formats are teh_suck.

As long as I can burn it with Nero 7 it doesn't matter to me... although if it were a multi-part file it would be sweet (I know, it would take too long to download).

You will need a program to convert the DivX avi file to DVD format. There are lots out there, but I don't use 'em so I cant suggest any. Just be aware that when they convert the movie to Divx, it is being shrunk in size/quality for the intentions of being played on a computer (which is totaly different then playing a movie on your tv). So when you then take a DivX and covert it to DVD again, the quality will not be the same as the original.
I think SuperDragon mentioned a program to convert DivX to DVD...

I don't understand why WMV sucks? It plays in Windows Media Player, which is what comes with Windows??
Heck, most folks play DivX with Windows Media Player, and if they don't use that, then they use DivX's own proprietary DivX player.

Sorry, you haven't convinced me that WMV is a terrible idea. I've been working with Digital Video for over 8 years and I have used all formats and many of the popular codecs available. The biggest problem, is that most people don't understand video enough to use them properly.

My only guess as to why people don't like WMV is because there is a misconception that WMV is terrible quality. Which is not the case. But enough of my trying to convince people. I will post back later today with a WMV clip of a RiffTrax movie. I will use the same quality settings that DivX would use and then you can decide if you think its really sucks.

p.s. I'm not disagreeing with RiffTrax choice to use DivX. I'm glad they have a partnership with DivX. I hope they can release more downloadable RiffTrax in the future because of this.

Whether WMV is the best media player or not, wouldn't the use of it be counter-intuitive for RiffTrax's Mac users?

Very good point. I never thought about MAC users.

You would have to install "Windows Media Components for QuickTime" to play WMV on a MAC.

Either way, DivX is not native to MAC. So MAC users would have to install something to play the file, be it DivX codec or Windows Media Components for QuickTime
