Only 1 TB? And split to RAID? Lightweight. :D

Heh-heh.  I'm currently at 6 TB.  I have more storage on my home network than the company I work for has on theirs.

Well, porn DOES take up a lot of space......

So does 70+ RiffTrax ISOs.    ;)

Yeah, I imagine those bad boys do take up a lot  of room.

Speaking of data storage, might this not be better appended to the other computer thread now? ;)

Not bad, not bad. I think I would classify you as a bantamweight. :)

...

Bah, who needs all that? I'm still storing data on cassette tapes. Woo-Hoo text-based adventure games!

Well, lets see..
I have 3 TB in the main computer I'm on currently.. (2 - 750 GB, & 3 - 500 GB hard drives)
500 GB on my wife's computer
500 GB on the receptionist computer
1TB on my main on my front office
500 GB on another tax computer
and 2 TB on my ID/video editing computer (1 - 250GB, 1 - 500GB, &1 -750GB)

Plus 500GB on my video surveillance computer 8)

I Need MORE!! >:D >:D

I don't keep ISOs, I just convert the "mixed" .wav into an .mp3 and stick it in the compressed folder. By far the most time-consuming part of a re-author is the conversion of the audio, so with an .mp3 it's relatively simple to convert that back to .ac3.

And since we're all reauthoring these DVDs LEGALLY *ahem* that means we have instant access to the .vobs of the movies whenever we need to re-reauthor anyway.

Ah... but it's not just about storage.  I don't burn RiffTrax to DVD anymore unless I want to take one to a friend's house.  I keep the ISOs on my home theater PC and can watch any of them instantly with only a couple clicks of the remote.  No need to even get out of the La-Z-Boy.    ;)

OOO..

I Must Evolve, Further! :o

gammer

I manage about a dozen servers at work (I'm the network Admin) and I use 2 Acer TravelMate laptops for work.
I have a small network at home with 3 desktops (two used for video stuff and one for personal) and one laptop (personal).

Needless to say, I get pretty sick of computers after a while.

I used to work on family and friends computers, but now I don't. 1) Not enough time and 2) Just sick of doing it.

I attended a neat HP seminar last year and one of the things computer companies are doing is trying to look for ways to reduce power consumption. They've predicted that in 4 years computers will draw more from the power grid then anything else combined.
So as you can see, there will be money to be made in power conservation in computers over the next few years.

Chaos

Most definitely true.

The new 45nm processors are helping (they will cut power use of the core CPU by as much as 30% in some cases), but not enough - the peripheral devices and other components of the PC use a lot of power as well. Monitors in particular are pretty nasty consumers, as are devices that people leave on even when their computer is off (like speakers).

I've read some interesting articles over the last few months about ideas for green computers. I'll see if I can dig some up. Personally, I'm in the process of saving up enough money to install a plethora of solar panels on my roof, as well as a wind turbine in my yard. WIthin about 2-3 years, I'll be off the landline power grid entirely and my house will be 100% green.

Unless there are bats nearby

Chaos

We don't really get many migratory bats in this area. There are only one or two species that frequent the area, and they're native, non-tree dwellers. So it isn't too much of an issue. Surprisingly, the company I contacted about the wind turbines is aware of the issue, and actually refuses to sell to people who live within the 4 major bat migratory paths in Canada - they had to check my location against their system before they would even start discussing prices. You gotta give credit when a company is actually aware of and taking steps to deal with their environmental impact.

Tripe

Yeah I wondered about that when I first read the story.

I wonder if, where there is conflict between flight paths and optimal locations, so sort of redrafting of the flight paths could be effected.
