Now, keep in mind, hard drives fail too, so backing up on DVDs every so often is recommended too.

As long as you don't somehow end up with DVDs that instinctively know the second you wipe the things burned on it off your hard drive....and they then suddenly decide they don't want to work anymore for no damn reason....

I never did.  And it doesn't seem to matter which brand, so far.  Haven't tried them all yet.

Bob

A friend of mine actually got TWO USB external hard drives and he backs up one hard drive on the other.

And no, he does not wear a belt and suspenders both.

As long as you get a good name brand, you can be assured that they are in working order. Next is the  burning software, which can sometimes not work properly, and also the burner itself might be screwed up and creating errors during the burning process...

He is so much into backing things up, he has six kidneys.   Honestly, he does.    But he is a mormon and does not drink so he is TOTALLY wasting them.

If it was the first time, I'd say that was possibly it but....

After the first time I started playing the DVD or checking the files before I emptied the Recycling Bin.  After they all worked, I'd finally dump the files and put the DVD in storage.   Try to use the DVD again and it locks up the computer or says there's nothing on it or whatever...

And I'm beating my head on the table.  Can't figure it out.

Chaos

Clearly, the god of computers hates you.

Heh-heh.  I'm currently at 6 TB.  I have more storage on my home network than the company I work for has on theirs.
