Official word from the High School After High School is that a "five pound party" was a sorority tradition.  Basically, when one of the sisters would get engaged, she'd buy a five pound box of chocolates to celebrate.  All of the sisters would get together and mow through fistfuls of petits-four, and coo over the ring, and secretly nurse a bitter resentment that that bitch managed to snag a man first, when everybody knows the boys only like her because she's spread her legs for half the football team.

Here's the documentation to support that.

Thanks for that.  I was starting to worry about my hearing....

I subscribe to the Yahoo MST3K group. One of the members, Patty Marvel, sent a letter to Iowa State University regarding that memorable line in "The Home Economics Story."

If you remember, toward the end of the short, the narrator sounds like he says "The five-pound potty that Kay had..." It's a great moment, because you can hear Joel cracking up before the line even comes up. Then he says, "Five-pound potty?! She must have had a big breakfast!!!"

So...what's the deal?! Here's the response Patty received from Iowa State:

Dear Ms. Marvel,

Our office received your inquiry about the promotional
film called "The Home Economics Story." According to
sources here the reference in the film is to a
"five-pound party." Apparently there was an old
sorority tradition to have a party and bring a 5-lb.
box of candy when you announced your engagement.

Sincerely,
Sandra Gartz
Assistant to the Director

I feel better now...don't you?!

Thank you.  You're too kind.

Now should we all feel embarrassed that we (as in the Royal "we" as MSTies everywhere)  wasted the time of someone who would otherwise be running a University with this question?   ;)
