I suppose. I could name any idea, and likely as not you could name where it's already been done.

How about a movie where a man is embroiled in a conflict within his mind between him and giant gophers.  This is then highlighted and influenced by his fight with the government that is letting poverty line neighborhoods be swallowed up by the sea.

Beutiful Mind, Night of the Lepus, and Attack of the Killer Tomatoes.

I like mine better:

A comedy where a man undergoes a series of awkward conflicts (ala Meet The Parents, etc), everything possible goes wrong in his life, his children dies, and at the end he dies.

Uh... thats Uncle Ted, man.  How could you make such a crack about his tragic life?

Shit, I completely forgot to mention this...

A while back, I read something that made me mad. I saw an IMDb listing for an upcoming remake of Joe Dante's Piranha, to be written and directed by Alexandre Aja (who did the excellent French slasher flick High Tension). Now, for those of you who don't know, Joe Dante's Piranha was a low-budget spoof of Jaws produced by the great Roger Corman. Universal wanted to prevent Piranha's release, because they thought that it was a rip-off of Jaws. However, Spielberg came in and said he loved the film, and thus New World Pictures got to release the film. Spielberg got the fact that it was a comedy.

Now, what made me mad was the fact that Alexandre Aja was planning to remake Piranha as a SERIOUS HORROR FILM. What the hell? If you're going to remake Piranha, remake it as a comedy! You can't do a serious remake of a comedic film? What, in 30 years, are we going to see Mars Attacks! redone as a serious sci-fi film?!? What the hell is Hollywood thinking?!? Get your heads out of your butts! This is a major mistake on Aja's and the studio who greenlighted this remake's part. I wouldn't mind a comedic remake, since the first film wasn't nearly as funny as it could have been, but a serious remake wouldn't work because it's a DUMB FUCKIN' STORY! It's almost as bad as doing a remake of The Little Shop of Horrors without the comedy.

I liked Switchblade Romance - though I thought it fell apart completely at the end.  I'm hoping his new remake will be more like the original, and less like the sequel...

I thought the ending was fantastic.

Well, like I said, a serious remake of a comedy will never work. If you remake a comedy, make the new version a comedy. If somebody remade Shaun of the Dead 30 years from now and removed all of the humor, it would be horrible.

Why would it be horrible?  It would be a horror zombie movie set in England, Mars Attack would be a horror invasion movie.

How can you say they'd be bad, if they were going to all the effort of removing all the comedy, then they'd probably ramp up the horror aspects a fair bit and they could be a couple of good scary films.

They'd end up being more like Night of the Living Dead and a scary version of Signs and less like the original movies but I don't see a problem with that.

If you took the plot of Police Academy and made a flat-out action movie out of it it could end up good, why not?  A bunch of rookie cops having to step-up and take action, kill a couple off along the way, it could be great.

Hell the first Airplane movie is a remake of a drama where they added comedy...worked out for them.

You must be one of the few people who wants remakes to actually be more like the original movies

No, it was a spoof! They only used so much of the original dialogue because they thought it was funnier than coming up with new, "funny" dialogue (of course they took certain things to extremes, I.E., "I picked the wrong day to quit smoking").

No, but Piranha has a really stupid plot, and you couldn't do anything more with it other than make a comedy. One of the reasons that Plan 9 from Outer Space failed as a science-fiction film was because of its story. If Ed Wood had been smart enough to try and make an actual comedy out of it, it would have been a lot better film. But it's the "worst movie ever made!" because it was intended to be a serious sci-fi flick, not a comedy.

A serious Pirahna remake would be like making a serious "Scary Movie" remake. A serious remake of a spoof. Of course, in Scary Movie's case, it would be a serious version of a spoof of a spoof of a semi-serious genre.

mrbasehart

Wouldn't a serious remake of Scary Movie be Scream? ;)

Scream actually feels like a bad remake of the 1980s spoof Student Bodies. ;)

The Buffy the Vampire TV show was serious while the movie of the same name was a comedy, but I cannot really think of any other "comedy to serious" change would work.   And Buffy only worked since the same writer/creator wrote both.
