I almost never see movies twice in a theater.

I am making an exception for this one.

A brief list of what I liked about this movie.  Not sure how much people are worried about spoilers, so I'll just hide the whole thing.

Spoiler

  • While it, to me, retained the flavor of a Trek movie it moved at a very fast and exciting pace.  More happened in ten minutes of this movie than the first 390 minutes of Star Trek: The Motion Picture.  (Yes ST: TMP is only about 130 minutes, but I'm counting watching the movie three times in a row while counting every repeated action as a new one)  They even still had the big glory shot reveal of the Enterprise, giving it the respect and reverence that Trekkies will demand, but quick enough that it didn't get annoying while waiting for something else to happen.
  • I liked the redesign of the ships, right down to taking the bridge out of the barely concealed bubble on top of the ship to a more secure section embedded in the saucer.  I also like how the ships interior looks like it has actual machinery with apparent purposes instead of endless flat panels in front of tiny inconvenient tubes you can crawl through to change small interchangeable chips.
  • I like the fact that time travel was used in a way that wasn't a good magic wand that in the end can erase all the bad things and leave it all happy and rainbows.  A lot of Star Trek history is made up of:  Villain uses time travel to screw with history, Heroes chase them through time, someone makes a joke about messing up the timeline in an insignificant way, in the end everything goes back to normal.  Here time travel had major cataclysmic consequences, none of which was simply erased.  An entire planet was lost because of it, the lives of countless people were changed.  Still everyone that's left presses on.
  • I like that this is making changes to Trek while acknowledging the past.  If they tried to make this fit completely within the established Trek canon they would have driven themselves insane and we'd be so bogged down in details that they never would have made it to their story, on the other hand if they just started over and ignored the past completely then the entire movie would be reduced by Trek fans to what's different/what's the same arguments.  Granted that's going to happen to an extent anyway, but the path this movie took is probably the best route to reducing it.
  • I like the fact that they kept some retro elements in the redesigned look, like some of the uniforms, controls and even a few 60's hairstyles.

I could keep going, long story short I loved seeing this movie, it was well worth the extra cash to see it in IMAX and I'll likely see it again soon.  Oh, but first I wanna bring up two things I know have been mentioned as complaints, whether big or small.

Spock designing the Kobayashi Maru test.

While there's always the "This is a new continuity" excuse for inconsistencies, I don't actually see this as an inconsistency unless there's a reference to Spock and this test I'm unaware of.  Thinking of his dialog in Star Trek 2, all I can think of that applies is "I never took the Kobayashi Maru test until now, what do you think of my solution?"

If he designed the test, what would be the point in him taking it?  If he designed it after graduation especially.

And of course Spock and Uhura.

This surprised me, but it didn't really bother me.  It was set up both with the previous dialog about favoritism, and it tied in with the conversations Spock had with his father.  When his father finally admitted that he married Spock's mother out of love, it showed Spock that there could be a way for logic and emotion to coexist, and that the feelings he had for a human woman weren't to be ignored.

If I have any true complaints about this movie, well...Checkov's accent was a little much, but that's pretty consistent.  Also Scotty could have had a lot more screen time for my taste.

Coming from someone who is much more Star Wars fan than Star Trek (although I did always watch STTNG and tried to give Enterprise a chance...)

I really liked it. I enjoyed it and had a really good time. It's just so nice that, for a change, a movie I've been looking forward to actually delivers ...instead of me walking out of the theater going, "That was ok...I guess."  And the two classic Trek series fans I went with
(sister and dad...yes, we're a family divided over our sci-fi obsessions...it's very sad) liked it as well and would be willing to go see it again with me.
Plus, I love Pegg :-*

Now off to build a time machine so JJ and company can take a crack at Phantom Menace  - couldn't hurt ;)

LOL - I admit to riffing  a few moments in my head already

I had one moment where I couldn't stop the riff in my head from forming.

And there's plenty of ammo for Kumar jokes whenever Sulu is around. That and no deep "Captain, there is something coming up on our viewscreen" voice.

When Sulu told Kirk he had fencing skills I thought, "Oh crap we're gonna see sweaty torn-shirt Sulu aren't we?"

Or Spock's ship

"I'm glad is has that flat spinning circle in the back because otherwise that design wouldn't make a lick of sense in space."

Doctor Who?

I just got back and i wasn't expecting to like it at all but it was the best Star trek movie I have seen in a long time.

The casting was pretty much perfect,i loved the score, the fights were exciting, nice to see some monster on a big screen version of trek, hearing the theme at the end put a smile on my face, and Leonard Nimoy is Back as Spock!

over I really enjoyed it.

Now I wouldn't rank it above Star Trek's 2,4,or 6,but it is in the top five.

Now there were a few things I didn't like.

I think Simon Pegg was mostly waisted.

If I see lens flare and shaky cam in one more movie I am going to scream,I HATE IT,I HATE IT I HATE!

Did we really need to see Kirk steal a car and get into a bar fight to know he plays by his own rules?

What it red matter any way?

Kirk acted like a jerk for  most of the movie,I can't blame Spock for kicking him off the ship.

Other then that I love this movie.

I can't wait for the next movie.

I will probably Netflix the movie.    I was never a big fan of TOS star trek, but I loved TNG star trek, so there!
