As it may have occurred to some of you from the title, this thread is dedicated to that wholly remarkable book, The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy (and its subsequent sequels and spinoffs and what-have-you.)  So who's a fan?  Who here really knows where their towel is?

Junkyard

Long time fan. Discovered it WAAAAYYY back when I was 13, or earlier, and was blown away. I especially delighted in the technology.
And, of course, it taught me how to fly.

Sharktopus

I like to think I'm a hoopy frood.

I am a fan too.  I often re-read parts of it when I need something "mindless" to read that I can read in short spurts.  It's one of those books that can make you happy without requiring much mental attention.
mike5150 how tall are you?.....in gallons?

Sign me up, too.  I'm so hip to The Guide, I can barely see over my pelvis.

Back in high school, I used to do excerpts from Hitchhiker's Guide and Restaurant at speech tournaments.  Did pretty well with them, too, considering how relatively bizarre the source material is, and how odiously bad my British accents are.

Loved the first two.  The others seemed a bit like Adams was going through motions.

I have that too. It's got a lot of typoes for some reason, though.

Pak-Man

I was a big fan of the BBC series way way back when, and then when the movie came out I decided to take on every one of his books. I thought they all had something to bring to the table, but reading them all back to back shows how disjointed each story is from the other.

What I DIDN'T expect was that I'd fall completly in love with the Dirk Gently books. I wish Douglas Adams had had more time to expand that universe. Dirk Gently is one of the coolest detectives in fiction. :^)

Yeah, I really enjoyed the to Dirk Gently novels. I have to go back and re-read them sometime. Who could ask for a better supporting character than Thor?

BathTub

Oh definitely love DA and The Guide, around the early 90's when I was 13/14 I was rarely without my paperback copies, which are still on the shelves to my left I can see them from here. Not so much a fan of the BBC TV Show, but thought the film was alright. Really want to get the Radio Show.

Here is Douglas Adams doing a reading...

Tripe

Loved the Books, but I liked the Radio show better. I wish Lintila had turned up in the books instead of Fenchurch.

I especially loved The Long Dark Teatime of the Soul having seen St Pancras Station I could believe it's really Valhalla. The First Dirk Gently on the other hand is basically Shada with some of the more obvious Doctor Who elements removed.

The only HHGtG book that I found a little underwhelming was Mostly Harmless, but that could be because I had it on order for about two years due to DNA's notorious procrastination. Still I do have a first edition and that's er something.

SharpMonkey

Longtime Adams fan here, and I like to think of myself as a fella who knows where his towel's at.  I saw the BBC television series on local public television when I was 12 and I knew I'd found something special.   That led to the books and radio shows, all three of which have been major influences on my sense of humor.  The recent movie wasn't so hot in my opinion, but you can't win em all, right?

Thanks for the video, Bathtub.  That was really fun to see!

Sharktopus

I'm wearing my 42 shirt at this very moment.

For those who didn't enjoy the recent movie, I suggest pushing your expectations aside for a bit and giving it another try. I've wathced it a few times since it first came out, and I love it more each time. It's not a great adaptation of the material, but it's a very enjoyable movie on its own merits, with a lot going for it.
