It has come to my attention that there is some new use of the word "Porno" of which I am unaware. Could someone enlighten me? :^)

I believe the forum is automagically converting the name of a certain type of peer-to-peer file transfer mechanism that is popular with content pirates.

That explains quite a bit. I love the roundtable! :^)

I have to admit that I download illegal music all the time and I don't really have a moral issue with it.  I paid for "Rhapsody" but it wasn't really worth it because I couldn't use my iPod and I would really only play 5-6 songs a week(and then they continued to charge me and their tech support basically called me a liar and said I was stealing their service...but I won't go into that.  I guess that was karma).  Anyway, I don't know why, really, that's any different to me than downloading rifftrax but I would never think to download a rifftrax.

I guess when you get right down to it, on a moral level it's the same thing - stealing.  Is rifftrax different because I know the staff, because rifftrax is small, because I have more respect for Mike Nelson than for Snoop Dogg?  Who knows. I bet some others of you download illegal music too though.

But anyway, as someone who freely admits to stealing music I can tell you, I'd never buy a CD with half the stuff I download.  I may try to convince myself, "If I saw this on CD..."  No, it's probably on iTunes.  It doesn't help the person advertise.  Every now and then I'll stumble onto a good band and actually buy their CD but that doesn't happen a lot.  I think people who download a) don't care enough to buy the product b) are too broke to buy the product or c) think it's cool to beat the system.  All the other stuff is just vindicating their piracy.

At least I admit it's illegal and I think the RIAA is going to come knocking and then it'll be all over the news that I went to jail for "Whip It" and "She Blinded Me With Science."  That'd be embarrassing...worse yet, I think I illegally downloaded some Spice Girl songs.

I don't really have a point, just to say I'm guilty of piracy myself.

Who hasn't?  It may sound trite, but working at a job where its YOUR work that people are swapping for free has put things in a brand new perspective.  I can't imagine how frustrating it is for a band to have their CD leak months before it hits the shelves.

All you can do is attempt to remind people of the fact that we are just a few real people working here who don't need that kind of "support".  It's amazing how easy it is to forget that on the internet.

Just as an FYI, Canadians are statistically the worst for pirating stuff. So much so, that when new movies are released in North America, movie companies will purposely release them in Canada a week or so later then when they are released in the US.

I was all set to sneak my movie camera into the premiere of the Simpsons movie this weekend and then I read this thread and I've decided to not do it... JUST JOKING!  ... I never had any intention of sneaking a movie camera into the theater.  ;)

I had an assistant music director in college who often said that it was a lot easier to care about piracy when you weren't poor.

My problem with piracy is that it really affects small companies. Larger companies, well, its still illegal.

My more immediate problem with piracy is, if I can say this here, is that my brother has been dling rifftrax from said evil sites. Now, I have two brothers, one, who showed me this stuff, who is in korea right now, and another one who is just an ass. I can't influence said ass at all, so I can't tell him to stop. He won't listen. And he won't pay.

I plan to, when my brother who is in korea gets home, to just tally up all the rifftrax we have, and basically pay for them myself through him (I'm only sixteen, so I can't do it myself- or I would).

It makes me sad- but I will be fixing this. In about... 9 days, when we get back from canada.

Has anyone else pointed out that the synced versions online miss the witty banter before the movie starts?

Well, when I author my Rifftrax DVDs (for personal use, of course), I leave out the intro, too. I guess that has to do with the effort I'd have to put into creating a video file to include it in. That and there's usually only a minute or two worth of banter aside from the explanation portion of the intro, anyway.

As for the piracy thing, yes, I've downloaded stuff and even copied movies from time to time . . . but Rifftrax, The Film Crew, and MST3K are considered personally sacred and therefore I refuse to copy/download them. As for the movies they riff that I don't already own, well . . . ;)

I started editing out the music, the bad jokes, and the explanation on how to sync.  I leave in the part where Mike says what they are riffing and who is riffing.  This usually fits in the opening of the movie so there is no need for extra blank video.  I have also made the entire opening before the riffs start a separate video file with some photos of Mike and Kevin and the ONE of Bill, and then authored the movie with that audio/video file and the rifftrax/movie file.  Either way works good.
