I'll be the first to say that Japanese anime is NOT the greatest thing that has ever happened to film, but a good Japanese director for said 2D version of the film would probably be a good idea.... Hell, even Miyazaki would be an interesting choice -- Spirited Away was dark and fanciful at the same time...

ok. that does it. Angelina Jolie as Grendel's mother? puke.

Especially since the mom and Grendel never say anything in the poem, but maybe the writers can come up with some interesting dialogue, though I am skeptical. I did notice that IMDb lists two actors as playing young/old Cain, which might be cool too if done right. I don't really remember Cain being in the poem, except when it was mentioned that Grendel and  mom were descended from him.

I don't Miyazaki could Beowulf, and I say that loving his films.  Beowulf is a Norse saga with all the ruggedness, meloncholy and brutality that made us...I mean them...great.  I don't think he'd 'get' the story and I don't know if I'd like his 're-imagining' it.

If it were a real re-telling, faithful to the story, I'd try to watch it with an open mind.  But the chances of that happening are pretty slim.  There's very few adaptations Sin City and a crap-load of adaptations like 'League of Extraordinary Gentlemen'

What worries me is that if this is going to be like Polar Express, then it may just be a likeness of the actor/actress for Grendel and his mother, which would be pointless and end up being like the Gerard Butler version.  You lose all sense of the poem being epic if you try to rationalize it and make the monsters human.

This film will not look like Polar Express, It going to have a much more drawn/ painted look.

Yes the characters will look facially like the actors playing them, but I remember reading that Anthony Hopkins was going to be playing a guy who's like 15 feet tall or something? I don't know anything about the book/ his character/ and it might have been another actor.

Well, Miyazaki was just a name I pulled out lickity split-like....

Awesome directors for this flick include: Guillermo Del Toro, Alfonso Cuaron, Ridley Scott.
At least those are my top three

While I do love Ridley Scott and Guillermo del Toro, they do tend to adapt films.  While this isn't bad or anything, to me, Beowulf needs a literal translation in the sense that Frank Miller's works received, but I don't feel that Rodriguez or Snyder would necessarily be good for the job.

Frankly I'm surprised Peter Jackson hasn't tried to make one, after all Tolkien was an expert on Beowulf and that obviously translated heavily into his works.  [Note: Not endorsing Peter Jackson doing it, just saying that it's the type of work he would do]

Cibernético II

I have a feeling the producers are gonna want basically a CGI version of 300
I really do like pie.

Just Some Guy

First of all, PG-13 is probably the target for commercial viability.  They're probably targeting the high school crowd and an R would cut them out (at least out for sales that would get back to the studio).  And it would be easy to do Beowulf in PG-13 with an effective director.  Blood splatters and breasts may get an R rating but they don't turn a bad movie into a good movie.  A competent director would use the impression of extreme violence instead of showing it and the film would be better for it.  You couldn't make it G without losing the impact but PG-13 isn't an issue.

I don't have much faith in the movie, though, since it's going to be yet another quickie CGI film.

Sort of like Renaissance? I haven't goten to see it yet, but the trailer left an impression.

Edit: Come to think of it, probably more like A Scanner Darkly or Waking Life. Renaissance is very hi-res, B&W.

Well folks here's the teaser:

I'm pretty impressed, it looks a lot better than Polar Express did.
Thoughts?

BathTub

Yes it does look a couple of notches better than polar express, I never wanted to watch that, it just freaked me out.

the long undertow

It looks like eventually all movie trailers will end up using one of maybe five songs.  Requiem for  a Dream will account for 65% of all trailer music.

BathTub

Heh or perhaps Requiem for a Tower.
